It's interesting to see the many cool features that were planned for the Nintendo Switch predecessor, like the streetpass, 3d screen and such, in the end we only got bluetooth headphones (only after a very long time after release), 2 themes and paid online suscription, wow, hopefully the Switch 2 will have all, or at least one of the features that the 3ds had, c'mon Nintendo, give us features other than playing games, please
I know that Nintendo made the right choice by unifying their hardware. That much is obvious by the fact that the Switch is the fastest selling game console in history. But I still hate that there is no longer a separate handheld and home console with unique libraries and features for each. I love the 2 screen clamshell design of the DS&3DS. It just makes sense for portability. Having the console serve as its own screen protector (you should still get a real screen protector for them) while also being able to fit more screen in less area is awesome And the 3D was sick. The original model was finnicky, but the N3DS was near flawless. It really did elevate the games that used it well, so much that they (imo) feel worse without it. In fact, 3D not catching on is a real loss for consumers, at least imo. Manufacturers were pushing 3D TVs (or game consoles) that were really close to great, but not quite there. By the time major strides were made across home entertainment products and the tech finally started delivering what people expected, it was too late. Had manufacturers just given it a few more years in the oven before their massive push, 3D might still be relevant today. For example, if the 3D in the original 3DS had worked as well as it did in the N3DS, and that was the baseline experience, many people wouldn't have left that slider permanently in the "off" position. Or if the incredible 4K 3D OLED TVs that ended up bookending the 3D push had been near the start instead, consumers likely wouldn't have written them off. Regardless of how most consumers first encountered it, it was almost always before it got good, and nobody cared anymore when they did. Just a little more time to be perfected beforehand could have radically changed how things went down. Most people never experienced home 3D at its best.
The wii u was awesome its the best system to jailbreak because of the backward compatibility of it. I have a ps1 emulator on it, and you can even play nds games on it on the big screen
This is very interesting, and it shows they had interest in continuing forward with 3DS's existing features, many of which I would like to see brought back. This gives me more hope that they might actually do that with the Switch successor. I wonder if nowadays there is a solution that could make sending the feed to a screen wirelessly more ideal. If so, maybe they have returned to that idea for the Switch successor. I'm moreso expecting attempts to pander more to 3DS fans though, than actually putting in wild new features.
The fact that the switch cartridge port was originally designed for another console makes a lot of sense, especially when considering how the cart slot has its own firmware with fuses and whatnot. Always felt strange.
Man, heading about Nvidia ramking up the TegraX1 security early on is pretty sad given people found a way to get around it with the first Switches anyway.
The original higher-specced Wii was just a proposal from ATi to Nintendo (trying to sell them a higher end chip), Nintendo knew as early as the GC's release that they didn't want to do that and it didn't really go anywhere. The original PS3 is a good idea though.
Amazing analysis of Gigaleak files, most in-depth video I've seen of this type of content. I would love to see more videos in this style on hardware, games, or whatever.
Such a very interesting video on the canceled 3DS successor and the birth of the switch, I've always wanted to learn more information about that oval shaped controller leak.
Awesome writeup guys! Btw, don't forget that STmicro also makes the mcus for the joycon controllers, so their relations with nintendo are still strong.
Uhhhh, I think the bigger problem with the Wii U wasn't that most people saw it as a way for Nintendo to try to capture the mobile market, but with a lack of marketing
I think its funny that there was a console potentially codenamed Indy due to the fact many first party nintendo 64 games were developed on the silicon graphics Indy workstation.
Yeah, and the DS' prototype (which we made a video on) was codenamed Iris, which was also the name of a line of SGI workstations. I think it's a coincidence; until the 2013 merger the handheld and console hardware development teams were separate, and the Iris console was named after a flower.
The original concept for the INDY was very much within the DS lineup and didn't have the power to supersede the Wii U, so I think it's fair to call it a 3DS successor - it almost certainly would have been marketed as such, and in some documents it's even referred to as the "Next CTR", CTR being the 3DS' codename. The video shows how in 2014 this evolved into it being a distinct console under the Switch name which then evolved into the current Switch.
It was a success, but unfortunately it showed dedicated handhelds in a post-smartphone world were at a dead end. The Switch was the best choice Nintendo could have done. They could center all their resources in one device and allowed them to differentiate themselves from Sony and Microsoft while still appealing to their handheld market.
@@edwardsaldana2534 Absolutely. 2013 one of the best years as a college student who commutes 1-2 hours daily to attend classes. Bravely Default, A Link Between Worlds, Fire Emblem Awakening, Animal Crossing New Leaf, Pokemon X... And later with Smash 3DS, Monster Hunter, Pokemon ORAS... Eventually I hacked it and played anything GBA and below. And ending it with the gem that was Fire Emblem Echoes before I got my Switch in June 2017... It was the perfect handheld.
The Nintendo DS Indy would've been able to play its own games, New 3DS games, 3DS games, DSi games, DSiWare, DS games, Wii U games, WiiWare, Wii games and if modded, GameCube games due to the Wii's backwards compatibility with GameCube games even if you didn't have OG Wii, it still was compatible if modded. As far as VC Games (some modded), it could've played N64, SNES, NES, GameBoy, GameBoy Color, GameBoy Advance, VirtualBoy, SEGA Dreamcast (idk but maybe), SEGA Genisis, Sega CD, SEGA Master System, Atari 2600. Essentially, itself, as well as every other Nintendo, SEGA, and Atari console before it. Ngl, I wouldn't know any kid, especially Nintendo DS, Wii/Wii U, and GameCube fans like me and General Nintendo fans who wouldn't want a handheld like this.
Good stuff, Regina and Mac is Gamepad only like the music game on Switch was. Fun factor. RU-vid won't post my comment. Had a longer one but posted a shorter one with the other details. Liked my comment to see if RU-vid doesn't mess with it. I did an app reload and it seems to have not ruined my I liked comment but removed it just encase. NX, Next? Hmm besides the Cafe and other direction there. Like the Dreamcast projects of Dural and the other it is interesting what console makers really do go through of not only part availability and hardware gimmicks or so but what really they can get good on of either project suiting for specs, easy porting/reworking and more. A lot to consider of parts, what's ideal, and more. ARM, Power PC or otherwise between different parts compatibility or dropping it all together. What they are going for to achieve the vision with powerful enough hardware besides API/software environments with it. But Wii U like then 3DS emulatable or 3DS and not even close for Wii U but ports like Switch or other factors hmm. Would have been interesting a Wii U handheld for compatibility, mirroring with cables/dock. I have yet to watch your Nivida 3DS prototype video but yeah the Switch similar of GPU consideration (different Tegra of course) for 3DS is interesting for sure. Would or may not have been better then Vita which wouyhave been interesting. No idea compared to the Panasonic Jungle the cancellation of the MMO handheld before or during the early Vita/3DS era. My smartphone Nokia 5.1+ and 8.3 5G and TV 32 inch from 2016 with a 3rd party game lags, the delay is very noticeable. The app likely is at fault besides the hardware. Or the TV processing isn't good enough which is also very likely. But Wii U/Vita to PS4 did processing very well for the time/struggling nowadays Vita if too much interference while Wii U being local and only to Wii U related hardware makes it useable no problem then to a modem or otherwise competition with other devices that Xbox and PS4 and others have that Wii U doesn't have. I think Wii U could be expanded on the menu use like Windows 8, Xbox One 2013 or other things like GBA VC manuals not pausing the game or other factors of dual screen use while dual screen phones are still basic and niche of app use.
iirc hasn't it been mentioned Splatoon was meant for Nintendo's next console and then put on Wii U because of how complete it was? If Splatoon was originally meant to be a launch window title for INDY that would make a lot more sense than if they were waiting for the Switch as we know it. If the INDY had similar architecture to the Wii U and the INDY became NX with a new release date then it makes sense to retool it into a Wii U game instead of waiting that long while the Wii U was in a massive drought past 2015 (which the INDY might add more context too if it was supposed to launch around then)
