As a Canadian myself, the Ben Johnson doping scandal also broke my heart. Leading into the 1988 Olympics, it appeared that Ben Johnson wasn't the only Canadian Track and Field athlete using performance enhancing drugs. Desai Williams and Angela Issajenko also admitted to using performance enhancing drugs. It also turned out that Canada's Athletics Head Coach, Charlie Francis, along with the Team Doctor, Jamie Astaphan, got their athletes to take anabolic steroids. Astaphan admitted to injecting steroids on Ben Johnson up to 60 times. Key reason why Canadian Track and Field stars were forced to take steroids was that Athletics Canada were facing a prospect of having their funding cut from the Canadian Government if their athletes struggled. That's one of the problems with Canada's amateur sport system is that if athletes struggle at the Olympics, their sport governing bodies risk having their funding cut from the Government of Canada, Canadian Olympic Committee, and also the "Own The Podium" program. Its rumoured that at least 8 members of Canada's Athletics Team used steroids during the Charlie Francis era.
