People's collective sense of humor and vernacular were just so specific to this time. You couldn't write a song today that sounded like it was made by someone who genuinely was a product of the 40s.
You know, maybe it's just because I'm a weird person but I was never terrified of the Pink Elephants scene as a kid. In fact, I found it pretty cool and exciting, especially when it gets past the intro and goes into the more surreal animated segments. Maybe that honed my overall love for animation and how it can be artistic and fun.
Well I honestly see no “racism”, it’s supposed to be a damn joke lol. Plus, they’re cool characters in general. And on a side note, I always tell people that crows are some of the most amazing birds on the planet :)
Fun fact: Dumbo and Bambi was Disney’s response to Pinocchio and Fantasia. Pinocchio and Fantasia were quite expensive and both ended up flopping, almost making the company fall into bankruptcy! In response, Dumbo and Bambi was made with had lower budgets (their budgets were less than half of that of Pinocchio’s and Fantasia’s budgets) and shorter runtimes. The result was positive as Dumbo and Bambi both ended up being financially successful 🐘
I'm a full-grown adult who's pretty much been desensitized to anything that's scary or anything that is supposed to look or feel scary, and I can see why children wouldn't go to bed after watching this scene. I never watched this movie as a child, but I probably would have nightmares just like all of the other children that watched it.
I never saw anything racist about this scene, i think they added black men beacuse that black men are lot positive and have big sense of humour, not saying white people are not funny to but black people are more positive and thats why voice actors for these crows are black men. Also they never laughed at dumbo, they just tough that idea if elephant flying is straight up ridicilous
Considering racism is negative depictions pretty much exclusively, I don't think these crows are racist. They're just stereotypes, like the ditzy blondes or stupid white rednecks. Stereotypes do not always equal racism. The crows are the nicest damn people in the movie to Dumbo besides Timothy!
We had this on beta max and I just saw this movie for the first time in about 40 years on Disney+. This is the only scene I remember from the last time I saw this back in the early 80’s.
I remember watching this scene as a kid and not fully understanding what was going on and was just enjoying it, but now that I'm older, I now realize they were drunk 😅
Lol half the "slave labour" comments are most likely from those on low incomes who are living week-to-week struggling to put food on the table and getting sock or the compamy going under will put you on the streets. You literally are modern slave labour, you just don't realise it because you just about have enough disposable income to back a crate of beer every week
