I create weekly videos on: - Helping civil and structural engineering students and graduates secure the best career opportunities in the structural engineering industry. - Helping young structural engineers advance in their careers. - Hints, tips, advice and my insights as a practicing structural engineer.
I'm a structural project manager in California with an undergraduate degree from Cal Poly Pomona and a master's degree from UC San Diego. My career so far has allowed me to design and manage various types of building structures, ranging from residential wood apartment buildings, commercial steel buildings, and concrete parking structures and towers.
Disclaimer: Mat Picardal, P.E. does not technically hold the title "structural engineer" in California. Any claim of it in the videos or descriptions is unintentional and is superseded by the title "structural project manager".
I'm 6'5" , this same principle works for us too. Tall folks massive balls help our center of gravity to be lower. Also swinging helps with the counter balance too
This isn't just an American problem. Another person in the comments mentions that the video at the beginning of the short probably happened in Turkey. It's a worldwide thing
Idk if y’all are like me but I’m actually to chicken to go up any building taller than 10 stories. Any more than that and I’m actively panicking the entire time I’m up there
Soft story structures are like sandwich panels. If you are doing it to build things cheaper then you are doing it wrong, and it may lead to a disaster like the Grenfell Tower fire. Yes, you can and *should* build both of these designs to be completely safe by following the rules, but if someone is willing to build things by the rules and put that much time and resource to the building they aren't usually inclined to using sandwich panels or soft story structures in the first place. It's a cruel irony.
One of the older Renault F1 cars also had this system. It was placed at the nose of the car and greatly helped the car to remain stable when riding the kerbs on the track
How are we the wealthiest nation in the history of mankind and our government spends more money than any government in the history of mankind yet we don't have this here?
