Hello, we are Tony Ray & Patty Jones welcome to “Our Backwoods Homestead” in rural North Nashville on 4 acres.
We are new to Homesteading and looking forward to raising egg laying chickens to start and a large garden. We plan to add other animals as we grow!

Right now, we have been clearing the back area of the property for our chicken shed/coop and run.
We have been interested in Homesteading for 3 years and reaching out to other Homesteaders to learn and expand our knowledge and this lifestyle.

We have always lived a simple life from the day we got married in 2005, we purchased the small house on 4 acres and have remodeled the entire house to fit our needs. We are working our way to a more self-sufficient and sustainable lifestyle especially in the times we are living in.

New content as time permits.

We are excited about developing our property into a working Homestead.
Stay tuned it's going to be a fun ride!

Yes that would be good to do, it would stabilize it better. I never got around to doing mine, but it's held up great still standing.

Why you no put hot spot tape on the pipes, they get hot and melt the plastic won't last as long
@OurBackwoodsHomestead
@OurBackwoodsHomestead 4 месяца назад
It doesn't need any of that type of tape the plastic is really tuff. I only put foam tape over the screws so it wouldnt catch on the plastic.

You just get hooks screw them into the other 2 x 4 base and tighten them up its really simple its been holding up well for 2 years now. thank you!

Hi, great video, I seen someone else who instead of tying outside straps diagonal, they placed the straps going straight up and over in the middle of each window/section, saved him tying up any window as the strap held it.👍👊

How do you keep the windows closed so cold air doesn’t go in on freezing nights or days?
@OurBackwoodsHomestead

We have flaps to cover the windows on ours, we leave them open in the summer for air flow & closed in the winter.

A good place to find old cast iron is at your local scrap yard. I found a 10" chicken fryer and 2 10" skillets and a 10" lodge lid and I only paid 6.00 dollars for all of it. .30 cents a pound Good luck

How big is your storage area? And how big is the area for the chickens?
@OurBackwoodsHomestead
@OurBackwoodsHomestead Год назад
If you mean my Chicken coop? its 10x10 my chicken run area is 12 x 24 ft long & 8 ft high. That gives them plenty of room to run around and get sun during the daylight hours.

Just put a solid piece of vinyl flooring over your existing flooring instead of taking parts of it up and it will be seamless! Just a thought!

Hi there! How does the canvas do at keeping the run dry? And is it just a typical canvas that painters use? Thanks.
@OurBackwoodsHomestead
@OurBackwoodsHomestead Год назад
The tarp is just to keep the rain out of the run when the chickens are outside. It's a plastic tarp, they will stay up under it when the weather is bad, but most of the time they go into the coop.

@OurBackwoodsHomestead
@OurBackwoodsHomestead Год назад
You mean the coop door for the chickens to enter & go out? If so about 12" wide and 18" to 24 inches tall. Also you can look at chicken automatic doors they have certain measurements.
