Built in 1896 to transport ore from Queenstown’s mines to the port of Strahan, the West Coast Wilderness Railway today carries visitors through spectacular river gorges and rainforest in comfort.
Passengers are invited to step back in history aboard carriages hauled by the line’s original steam locomotives for a journey deep into the forest and into the heritage of Tasmania’s rugged west coast, where tales of resilience and triumph over adversity exemplify the region’s spirit.
A selection of full- and half-day tours is offered, with options to include packaged activities such as heritage tours, white water rafting and scenic helicopter flights.
The West Coast Wilderness Railway operates year-round on a seasonal timetable, with departures from both Strahan and Queenstown.
I live in the US and a friend from Tasmania sent this to me. I keep telling him I am thinking of coming for a visit. This may have done the trick to get me there. Very nicely done. I can see this line has been recently renovated. It is beautiful. I can not wait to visit your beautiful country.
