Thanks--this was really helpful! It looks like we have two very capable Democratic candidates. My hot take as a Scio voter is that the reasons that Ms. Merte is challenging Clerk Flintoft remain somewhat cryptic, and I am unaware of any significant shortcoming of the clerk's office from the last several years that should make me dissatisfied with our current elected official. All things being equal, and as a non-landlord, I must also be skeptical of Merte's commitments to an egalitarian democratic society if she is individually controlling other resident's access to have a primary domicile. Can ordinary citizens really trust a landlord to solve the affordable housing dilemmas of our community???
Not all candidates agree to participate with our forums. Only the Scio Clerk and Supervisor candidates agreed to participate. The Supervisor forum will take place next week and the video will be available thereafter.
PUD is a Planned Use Development which the Board of Trustees may authorize by amending the Zoning for a particular parcel from one type of zoning such as "Industrial" to a "Planned Use Development." There are criteria set forth in our Zoning Ordinance that a proposal must meet to qualify, and conditions that must be satisfied before being granted. The Goodrich Theater site was long zoned as a Planned Use Development but specifically as a movie theater. When the developer came in with proposed amendments to the Planned Use Development, we were able to negotiate potential workforce housing along with other uses on that site.

On the subject of voting, I found it disturbing that Shannon Beeman was concerned the voting machines were not connected to broad band while the votes were taking place. These machines can be hacked when connected to the internet. Plus with Bob Guysky said about getting multiple ballots at his house, wreaks of voter fraud in Washtenaw County. Seems to me Shannon Beeman doesn't care about an accurate tally, but welcomes fraud in order to get reelected. Bob should have worn a dress shirt instead of a T-Shirt. Shannon dressed more professionally, but she really isn't qualified to run anything.

The League of Women Voters' CEO Virginia Kase participated in the civil disobedience to protest Judge Kavanaugh and was among the activists arrested at the Capitol. She justified her stance representing the LWV, by saying that it is time for them to take a stand. with other board member standing behind her stance. "(2018) Last week the board of directors [LWV's] took bold steps for the organization in calling for a complete FBI investigation into all allegations of sexual misconduct and Thursday they went a step farther in officially urging the Senate to reject Judge Kavanaugh’s nomination." They can no longer claim to be non-partisan nor can J Alex Halderman as he was hired by Clinton Campaign, and only recommended recounts in States where the Clinton votes were close.
Well, not really. I've read that 1% of our electricity comes from oil. So, you are ALMOST correct. Oil could stop producing electricity tomorrow and hardly anyone on the planet would notice.

And it is especially not the cheapest when you pair them with batteries, which you have to do if you want to get rid of all fossil fuels and rely instead on solar and wind. Baseload is extremely cheap to produce. It is the marginal watt that is cheaper. The marginal watt is the watt that gets generated in what is essentially a large camping generator running on natural gas. These are the engines that kick on and generate low number megawatts at 3 in the afternoon in the summer when air conditioning spikes. That power is very expensive and solar IS cheaper than that.
Without nuclear, there is no solution to climate change. People seriously propose running Western Civilization plus all of transportation, plus all other uses of oil , coal and natural gas on solar and wind. The world uses almost 100 million barrels of oil a day (94.1 as of 2021)! The world consumes 23,457,129 tons of coal per day. Plus all the natural gas. Wind is a lot better than solar, but nuclear will be necessary if it is even possible.. A lot of things simply cannot be electrified. Maybe there will be enough biofuels to help with activities which cannot be electrified.

I was in the school fighting for my kid. He didn't return to school for his senior yr. He was bullied by a few teachers and the "hall gistopo" he called me several times in tears because he couldn't get the help he needed and he had an IEP. He was also very sick at the end of his 11th year and not one teacher reached out to him 😢
Are you willing to pay for medical care for that fetus. Are you willing to pay for its birth. Pay for its food, housing, clothing and schooling for it's lifetime? Currently in most States Republicans don't want to fund Social Welfare programs. If you don't want to pay these costs then you shouldn't be able to force a woman to have a child she can't afford.
This is extremely enlightening! Amazing questions by LWV, really brought out the differences between the candidates and highlighted some key issues of the area. This stuff is hard to learn about if you're recently getting interested in local politics. Thank you LWV for providing this essential service for our democracy!

So the security issues are only important in the elections where Democrats think there is a problem with hacking, just like the documentary Kill Chain states, however, when a conservative calls fouls, then there is no issues with our election system. I call BS!
