Beautiful work guys I just visited the Philippines last October and fell in love with the Filipino Kundiman style of guitar. Im Filipino American and was raised in the US but can relate to the beautiful harmonic and melodic style as a flamenco guitarist 🇵🇭
her carmina burana recording was one of the first CDs i bought! i only saw and heard her once in a homeconing concert at the little theatre of the ccp. she was all human as she forgot some of the lines to mutya ng pasig, relying on her assisting pianist. even so, she strode to the stage like a great diva that she is. will never forget that evening. should ms mandac be a national artist fr music at this point?
Thank you for your comment because that is the question many are asking. What Ms. Mandac has done for Filipinos in the opera world on international stages is something spectacular. So why have her kababayan not recognised her great achievements in the most appropriate way?
I hadn’t heard of her before this. Your video is a gorgeous tribute to a magnificent woman. I will now look for all the recordings I can find. Thank you for sharing her story and talent. BRAVA ❤
This wonderful soprano made quite an impression in Seattle when I was living there & gave a fine recital that I attended. I could never figure why she seemed to fade away after appearing at the MET. I am ashamed to say that I just lost track of her. I first heard about her as LIu in TURANDOT with Nilsson in Seattle & I heard that Mandac‘s sympathetic performance practically stole the show. The character of Liu is often by her nature a built in audience favorite but in that production Mandac won the hearts of Seattle opera goers. Wherever she is now I wish her well. She certainly made a great impression on me in the recital she gave. I missed the earlier TURANDOT unfortunately.
Thank you so much for commenting. It’s so wonderful to hear this from someone who was actually in Seattle during her time there. It provides me with more insight into her performances. Thank you! 🙏🏼💗
Ms. Mandac told me about that and how humble the great Ms. Nilsson was to praise the newcomer’s voice and invite her to share their curtain call together. Please let me know more about the performance. 🙏🏼
I am so happy that finally, I learned more about Ms. Evelyn Mandac, the Filipina living legend. I have admired her so much since she performed once in the Philippines in the late 70's by invitation I think of the First Lady. Thank you, Chiara, for sharing this lecture/documentary about her. I wish you both well.
Thank you for exploring our music and culture sir's.. maraming salamat din at binubuhay nyo pa rin ang harana at kundiman..napakasarap sa tainga pakinggan kahit rakista ako sa banda...naappreciate ko talga yan dahil ung yumao kong ama ay dating Haranista sa province nmin sa Dao Capiz.
chanced upon this - Mr. Michael was my teacher way back when he held guitar lessons in St. Scholastica's College near De La Salle University after my classes - nice to hear these familiar pieces Mabuhay po kayo!
Thank you professors for this enlightening RU-vid video. As a 62-year-old who left our homeland at the age of 12 due to martial law, I missed out on learning our country's history. This video has been a revelation, filling in so many blanks for me. A heartfelt thank you to both professors for sharing your knowledge and insights. Your dedication to history education is truly appreciated. 🙏❤️ #HistoryEnlightened #GratefulLearner
Bravo 👏👏👏 Thank you for sharing a video of this Guitar Masterclass! I’ve always thought that kundimans were love songs; I just learned from this class that they were meant to be songs of protest about oppression under the Spanish colonizers. As a child, I associated Filipino folk music with old movies and it kind of made me sleepy listening to it. But growing up, I learned to appreciate it. I agree, Filipino music is delightful to the ears. I love Filipino music, especially folk and ballads.
Ah this reminds me of my late lola (grand ma) God rest her soul and the simplicity of farm life in the province back in the day. Kundiman classics all day. Mr. Levi Celerio was one of my favorite composers. I like how he made music from leaves. I was able to copy it by using candy wrappers one time. Thank you for the music...Maestros! ❤❤❤
@@ChiaraCoxThe austronesian came in later but the malays were the first. Yet, we can agree that the present now were mostly from austronesian descent probably because these austronesian mostly settled in luzon(where manila is located) and when spaniards came, manila being the capital, it became the center and thus became the most rapidly increased populated area. But if you try to visit the southern part where the first people, this is where mostly Malays and other pacidic islander descent.
Thank you for commenting. We had Filipino singers sing at another event the next day. It was fantastic! I sang Sa Kabukiran with Mr Dadap and Mr Aguilar too. It was awesome!
