It’s kind of crazy, but I’m reading a book about urban faeries written by Charles de Lint. And in his books he describes such profoundly beautiful music that I get very curious about what it’s all about because it must be some very beautiful music because he writes about it in all his books and short stories. This evening he described the way a magical person looked at his main character and he compared it to how he feels when he plays a “wild Shetland reel in A minor.” As I am so very enamored with all kinds of music (and I know too how much I love Celtic music, especially the fiddle), I decided to go looking for this particular music. At the top of the list of its response to my query on Google is your recording here. From the moment you began playing, my mouth dropped open in amazement and joy. This is one of the happiest, liveliest pieces I have ever heard. I’m going to do research to find more as I am now completely hooked. What an extraordinarily beautiful piece. Thank you very kindly for sharing it.
I am a fiddler since before we HAD internet....my questiion: where does one get a replacement bridge and are the top strings regular violin strings ( the "D" has a wire wrapped around it?)
Hi! You have to get in touch with a fiddle maker, and it needs to be adjusted to that specific fiddle. The strings are not normal fiddle strings, but Hardanger fiddle strings. Where they are best to order depends on where in the world you are based. Good luck!
You describe this as a Classic bluegrass and old time tune" but it is BRITISH! THe history of this tune in the British Isles is well documented with numerous variations. It's history goes back well before the founding of the United States.
Hallo! Do you have (or know of) a video explaining the different tuning systems that diatonic accordions use? Looking at Castagnari, I notice they offer variations on tunings - for example; G/C Norwegian-Swedish System and G/C Marimon. I would _really_ love to know the reasons why one would choose these tunings over the standard. If anyone has any info at all about this, I'd be forever grateful! Tack 🙂🪗
Hi Ted! This course is a grat way to start. Just make sure you have a C/G 2 row button accordion for this course. Rannveig uses a A/D accordion for the advanced course.
