This proves Roger is the GOAT. He came and dominated in the transition and post-transition periods where he came on top of both fast and laser-like precision serve-n-volleyers like Kijack, henman and tough, powerfull, resilient baseliners like Aggassi, Gonzales, Rafa, Novak, Murray, Roddick etc.Roger is a genuine full-spectrum player thus the GOAT
Henman,Krajicek,Rosset,Ivanisevic,Martin,Rafter and Philipoussis were not in the same S&V class as peak Edberg,Becker,Sampras and Mac.Not by a long shot. Fed came up against second rate serve(and mostly just big servers) and volleyers who were all pretty much at the tail end of their careers any how, by the late 90s and early 2000s. Fed against Mac,Edberg,Sampras and Becker(when all were at their best)......Now that I would pay to see ! From the little evidence we do have......young Fed struggled against these geriatric(by that point) second division S&Vs like Rafter and Rosset. And by the mid 00s, S&V was an extinct art altogether. The one real confrontation for Fed, against an elite S&V....was the 4th r at 2001 Wimby against a past his best Sampras. And Pete still made Fed sweat all the way!
That volley of Sampras' after Safin's sensational return on match point was insane enough, but then Safin followed up with an unbelievable running forehand. One of the best match points ever. Three absolute incredible shots in less than a few seconds.
Jesus Christ Lord God save us and the whole world. Jesus Christ Lord God save us and the whole world. Jesus Christ Lord God save us and the whole world.
@@jajasatorashi136 I think he was a bit of an under achiever though, and he was a bit inconsistent. Medvedev is also really strong, so was Yevgeny Kafelnikov.
I've always wondered how a Swedish player who learned on clay could be the world's best serve and volleyer. Also, he married Annette which sounds like "A Net". I always giggle with that.
This court was medium to medium slow. Honestly Sampras was outmatched and would have been outmatched even at his peak in 1995. His game was more effective on faster decoturf but he did have his moments on rebound ace though he won only two like Courier, Lendl, Becker.
Since the USO of 2000 it and for the next two full years it was nothing, but struggle for Sampras! Even his 2002 USO campaign felt like an uphill battle and let’s be perfectly honest here, Pete got very very lucky in that 2002 final playing not only the opponent he knows almost too well, but also an opponent like himself, who was also pretty much struggling for relevancy! After three extremely tight five setters back-to-back-to-back there is no way in hell Sampras was ready to endure yet another one playing someone like Safin or Hewitt in the final! If that was the case it would be a routine 3-4 sets tops job for any Federer era gen opponent, that was mentally tough enough like Safin or Hewitt, maybe even Nalbandian! He has lady fortune to thank he got to face washed out worn out and old and familiar Agassi in the final instead! Otherwise he would be forever stuck at an ugly 13…
No, no and no. How many nos do I need to write here. Soooo... Pete got lucky because it was pouring rain during most of the tournament? Agassi was washed out? Didn't he win a slam or two after that?
Pete Sampras in his prime would have swept Federer in his prime in these 3 exhibition games, you can see that even in retirement Sampras put up a fight, Sampras' serve and returns in his prime would not have given Federer a chance.
Even though he lost, I feel like Pete played some great tennis and fought really hard to make it as close as it was. He was definitely past it and with Marat playing this well, it could have been a bad beatdown. Instead it was a tight 4 set thriller.
Unser Boris.
