Hi, my name is Danielle and I am the owner of Chibi Chi Designs. On my channel, you'll find a behind the scenes sneak peek of what it's really like to run a creative business. I will be sharing studio vlogs, tips and tricks to help you either start or grow your own business and you can watch me develop my artistic skills to create unique designs that you help to bring to life.
I've been on Etsy as Chibi Chi Designs since 2013 and I have amassed so much knowledge and skills in that time. I'm a big believer in sharing what I've learned and an advocate for community over competition! If this sounds like something you like, then please subscribe and join me.
♥ About me ♥ I've always been creative and used to love to draw and illustrate. After taking a 17-year break *gulp* from drawing, I decided that 2020 would be the year that I finally start to get back my long-buried talent! My favourite styles are Chibi (hence my name), mid-century, and 90s style cartoons.
Omg hope this helps me cus I have not been able to get a bright green.. just a weird midtone with no clue why.. thank you.. I get great prints but my colour is way off
hey hope you're well, is there a way i can contact you please to get help on the ink settings as im really struggling ive wasted so much materials and ink and still nowhere x
Hey hope you’re well, what paper type would you choose for printing on linen card as cardstock doesn’t seem to show as an option on the pixma printer x
I use the paper Cutz adhesive photo paper. It depends on the project as to whether I use gloss or matte. Gloss is my favourite overall as the colours really pop.
@danielle-chibichidesigns4433 thankyou im actually watching your sticker video just now on my tv 😂 I love gloss over matte but wondered what would be best, I will have a look at papercutz, im also going to try making fridge magnets, struggling to find my niche and struggling to work out my colours on my epson printer and my canon 🙄 minefield xx
In my opinion the Epson colours are superior to the Canon BUT the Epson is also a pain for jams, not feeding straight, and eventually the feed rollers breaking. Overall I'd pick my Canon as it's built better and even though the colour match is slightly weaker, it's reliability more than makes up for it.
@danielle-chibichidesigns4433 I was printing notepads on my epson I use affinity to print from so I did a test print on epson and on canon, the grey colour in the border design on my epson came out like a grey purple but on canon it came out grey as it should have 🤦♀️ xx
I'm sure you have, but did you download the correct icc profiles for your Epson? Sometimes this can have a huge difference when printing in Affinity. Also make sure you've got the printer handling the colour, not the app in settings.
I've tried Papercutz as you suggested and have had terrible issues with the card breaking at the seam lve wasted endless prints l contacted them and they said it is an issue with the 300gsm they are going to replace the wastage but lm not happy and need to find another supplier is there anyone you would suggest
I’ve tried to find a magnet that I can use but so far I’ve just been wasting money, you didn’t link yours, at least I don’t think you did, can you tell me where you bought yours from. I’m awaiting more coming from Amazon 0.5 depth as I didn’t want them too thick. Thank you for this video, loved watching it 😃
I can't believe I missed it! I've added it to the links now, you can find them here amzn.to/46EP6GZ mine are 1mm thick though. Too thin and they will be too fragile and may broke with the constant opening and closing.
Papercutz is such a great company .they have so much thst is Compatible with my cricut machine . their card stock is always packed so well .never had a issue with the corners being bent (other company's ive used dont pack it so well so ive ended up with bent corners on my cardstock ..i will definitely use this company again and again .
@danielle-chibichidesigns4433 wow that is a long time I can definitely understand why as their cardstock etc are so good. 😃 (one main thing also )they are so helpful if I ever emailed or called to ask a question about an item they always willing to help /great customer service too ⭐️
@@danielle-chibichidesigns4433 Thank you. I'm trying to make save the dates which are 4 A6 cards on the same page, when I use the inkjet printer all seems ok, and then with the laser printer, some of it lines up (with tweaking!) but other parts of it don't, even though it is straight on my screen. Have you any idea what I'm doing wrong? Thank you!🙂
Have you completed the test steps that I go through in the lining up video? It sounds like some of your side margins are out more than others. You may need to break the design down into 4 and adjust then print each section individually. You could also try adjusting the margins on your laser printer to account for how much it's out, but that is quite technical and would involve a lot of trial and error. Just remember to put your settings back once you've finished your project if you do alter the margins 😊
Thank you so much for doing this video! I’ve been wanting to do tattoos for my business but I’ve wondered if the quality of at-home printing is as good as ordering the tattoos in bulk. How long did the tattoos last once applied?
The one on my wrist (from my RU-vid shorts) started to lift after 2 days, but I wash my hands a lot. Chibi Chi Juniors have been on for over a week! They're looking a little sorry for themselves, but still holding up! I was very impressed with the quality.
Hi, A video showing how to align the printing would be really nice. I have a Xerox B230 that I have got it just 1 month ago and I am so frustrated. It do not align as much i try to do it using Illustrator.
If you check out my more recent videos, I show you how to manually offset designs to get the laser and inkjet portions to line up better. I really hope it helps 😊
Oh dear, some of your viewership seem a bit confused. Firstly the Epsom 8550 printer is a good office printer that prints fairly decent photos on dye base ink very cheaply, where as the Epson SC P700 is really a small pro photo printer up to A3+ on pigment ink. This results in real quality photos you can sell in the art market. In general terms it’s a fairly cheap to use printer with 25cc of ink for £28 per cartridge. If you want to save even more money buy an Epson SC P900 printer. The sad fact is, in the world of inkjet printers the more you pay for a photo printer the cheaper they are to run, it’s as simple as that . I had a Canon 8750 for 8 years and it never gave me any trouble and is still working fine with its new owner ! This model has Been in production for 10 years,so canon must have got something right !
In an ideal world all of my viewers would be able to buy a top of the range printer, but I appeal to micro businesses that do not have the capital outlay for high end printers. I try to show them tips and tricks to make their printer work for them 🙂
I've been messing around with my save the dates but I've been moving the entire image over in the print dialogue instead of moving the toner elements within the canvas. Great video, gonna try this when I get home!
Good vid, but why make it so hard turning everything 90 degrees on the screen? Go 11.7 x 8.3 at the start, and print in landscape, no need for all the rotation.
True! But lots of my viewers struggle with printer settings. It's much easier for them to have one extra step in the design process, but then one less step when it comes to the actual printer.
@@danielle-chibichidesigns4433 I disagree. Much easier to select the option 'landscape' in the printer settings, and being able to work on a design in front of you the right way up without having to rotate everything!
Perhaps for you, but I can only go with the experience of my viewers, and I know that for them having to remember the extra step each time it's printed (portrait to landscape) will be a hindrance. You only have to rotate it once, then you can print as is limitless times. It's probably a personal preference thing.
Hope you are well Danielle. You almost have me sold on the ip8750 and paper cutz, but a couple more queries : if I were to print photos 10cmx14cm per card, roughly how many prints do you think i would get using a full set of inks with papercutz matte photo paper 300gsm. Also, how do you think the ip8750 would perform if it was asked to print a couple of hundred cards each day and how often would I need to clean it ? Your advice is proving to be invaluable to me and when I am decided on what to purchase , I do not mind using any link you have if it will benefit you in any way. Thanks
I'm so glad my advice is helping! It's so hard to predict ink yield as there are so many different variables involved such as image saturation, colour use etc I'd say probably around the 2-300 mark though. With heavy use of that kind you'll probably find any desktop printer will last less than a year. But even with greetings card small margins, it will have paid for itself several times over. I'd suggest cleaning the rollers daily with a dry lint free cloth and then a more intensive clean when you notice the rollers aren't picking up properly. You can buy cleaning sheets to help with this too ☺️ I hope this helps!
@@danielle-chibichidesigns4433 lavalier or wireless mic would help with sound quality and recording it on same device. i record camera segments using lavalier and record in camera. that could be my old phone or sony camera. the voice over you could do sameway. in editing you can drop what you dont need. in adobe audition you can edit the voice. as i am restarting my journey on youtube i could do a video about that later in july, i struggled with sound in the past too, just learned how to make it better and i dont think i am there yet.
I've looked at wireless mics before as felt they would definitely help. It's a bit of a minefield for choosing the correct one. I use Davinci resolve for edits and it does allow you to clean up the audio, but it can only do so much based on the original. A video on audio would be very useful!
I have the same printer and gosh, I had a hard battle too to get the colours I want! Biggest issue was the paper, because in Hungary, where I live, the selections of papers are kinda low, so had many-many tests and errors until I found a paper that is good enough. Would be nice to try Paper Cutz but they are UK based, they don't ship to my country :,))
It's always nice to know I wasn't alone in the colour struggles! I'm sorry that it's difficult to source good paper, but I'm glad you've found some that works 😊
Grreat video. How did you clean the rollers on the canon? Mine is not gripping and im having to sort of force it in, which is hit and miss. I tried roller cleaning in the settings but it did nothing.
I actually use isopropyl alcohol on a lint free cloth. Try to print with no card in, and as the rollers are trying to grab the media, press the lint free cloth to each one. It will clean it as it's turning.
Really appreciate your insight into this -- looking at getting my own machine and such, so lots of super useful advice! I don't want to be that guy though, but you mistyped your URL on the froggos! I tried that before looking at the description :'D
Hi Danielle, I love your videos and have found them to be so useful and informative. My question for you is, with your canon pixma ip8750 printer, do you find that black ink does not print correctly onto gloss paper? What I mean is, does it not seem to sink into the paper like the rest of the colours and it seems to have a matte effect to it, meaning it'll scratch and mark? I am wondering if this issue I am having is due to my paper choice, so I have just ordered from Paper Cutz, so thanks for that :)
Hi Gaby, thank you so much for your message. Are you using official inks or compatibles? This can sometimes happen with poorer quality cardstock and ink. I really hope that the upgrade to paper cutz cardstock works for you. Keep me posted!
@@danielle-chibichidesigns4433 Thank you for your reply :) I am at the moment, using the official ink. I have have received the paper cutz, and I haven't yet printed onto the gloss, only the matte card. but am finding that the black is now streaky. Will have to keep trying. :)
@@danielle-chibichidesigns4433 I am printing from illustrator, and I am using the preset options, as I fiddled around a little with other colour management options when printing from illustrator, and the preset ones came out with the better results.
I'm afraid I don't have much experience with printing in illustrator. It sounds like the printer is laying down inconsistent levels of black. I'd suggest you do a printer head check and then clean if needed. If still no joy drop an email to paper cutz and I'm sure they can help, they're very friendly!
Thanks for the vid but can I ask you again : if I was to be using papercuts 300gsm single sided gloss card to print cards that are photographic pictures and I was to be printing lots and lots, what would be the best printer to use? Thanks
I have followed your instructions but card isn’t printed centrally it is about 8mm out. I print from Gimp. Borderless helps a little but I notice you don’t use borderless. How can I correct this please? Thanks
Thank you so much for sharing these tips and your knowledge. I'm exploring greeting card printing of my equine fine art as i have just bought a new canon pro-300 printer. My images are usually printed on 310 gsm german etching paper so i didn't want to go with gloss for the cards. The matt card you suggest looks perfect for the job. So glad i stumbles upon your utube channel x
Hi. I tried the papercutz matte paper you recommended on a full colour design but when I scored the card and folded it the paper cracked along the crease and was very visible as it was a mid blue colour print. Are there ways to avoid this? Many thanks 😊
Hi Debbie I'm sorry to hear that. Did you use a creasing board? I usually pre-crease my designs whenever possible, but if this is a full colour edge to edge design I appreciate this may not be possible. You could try creasing from the inside to see if it makes it less noticeable.
Yeah, thanks so much for this video, I'm saving up to start a fretting cards business, and your videos have motivated me to continue. I have been reading a lot about paper for greeting cards and most reviews say Nenaah Smooth Paper but I'm looking for a paper that has a little gloss on it, I don't want something that is too glossy. What would you recommend? I would love my finishes to be between glossy and matte.
How exciting for you! If you're not foiling, then look at a satin, I have a video where I show you silk and satin finishes from earlier in May. They are between a matte and gloss and look great! Best of luck with your greeting card business!
Hi, I have been following you for a while now I haven't started to fully run a business, but I'm motivated to do so I started printing greeting cards from home with my Epson Et- 2800 which is very limited because I'm not able to print borderless I I would love my design to have a nice colorful background, although I have a few designs that would go great on a white background. Also, I live in the Caribbean and sourcing cardstock here is impossible.
It's possible to create full print card designs on A4/ US letter size with any printer providing you're creating the finished card around 5x7" when folded. Have a look at some of my earlier greeting cards videos where I show you how to do this. It's something I do all the time with my specialist seed cards. As for the difficulties with sourcing cardstock, have you considered digital downloads? I know it's a saturated market, but it's one you'd be able to hopefully join in with until you've sorted your supplier. Wishing you the best of luck!
Thanks for the info, great video. I too have been struggling for years to get a professional looking finish to my foiling projects, a lot of the time there ends up being a lot of waste, which sucks. Unfortunately I don't think I can get the paper cutz brand here in Canada. Do you happen to know of any similar paperstocks in Canada/US? I don't get why heavy weight ink jet and laser paper is so hard to find. Thanks again 😊
It really is a struggle! A lot of the US brands that were recommended in groups I couldn't find in the UK to test. I unfortunately don't know of any in Canada. I'd definitely drop an email to support@papercutz.co.uk and ask if they can send internationally, they're really helpful. Good luck!,
I’ve got the same printer with affinity on a Mac but don’t have the colour match RGB profile option in the printer profiles. It’s there for the document setup but not when I come to print. Did this profile come with your initial canon ip8750 setup or have you added it? I hate this printer, it’s been sat unused for two years, I watched your video and felt inspired to try again but grrrrrr still not working! 😞😘
Thank you so much for your comment! Mine came with it, but you may be able to download it from the Canon site. Once you get the colours sorted it's a good printer!
Make sure you're using the "iP8700 series CUPS Printer Driver" that you download from their site and not the AirPrint driver that comes with macOS. If you're using the AirPrint driver remove that and install the drivers from Canon then reset the printer. Once that's installed and you've re-setup the printer to use that driver, you'll see the profiles in the print dialog under Printer Options -> Color Matching -> ColorSync. For the Automatic profile option to work, make sure to set the Media Type under Printer options -> Quality & Media -> Media Type. Also, printing using Affinity on Mac is nowhere as robust as on Windows sadly. It's one of the places where the Adobe Creative Suite wins supreme on Mac unfortunately. Affinity has left the printer driver and macOS to do the colour management rather than doing it themselves. You won't have the Colour Management dialog that's shown in this video at all and the profiles will be different. This guide is bit old but it's what I used to figure it out: www.redrivercatalog.com/profiles/how-to-use-icc-color-printer-profiles-iphoto-mac.html
Thank you so much for being kind and helpful enough to help another mac user out with your great knowledge! I hope that @scattering.sparkles finds it helpful.
Thank you so much for the Mac help and advice. I can now get the colours printing correctly using plain paper settings with ColorSync set to auto but as soon as you change the media type to Matt photo paper the colours all shift to really dark. It’s infuriating. I cannot believe it should be this difficult. Epson is print and go 😬. I, like Danielle, selected this printer to cope with. 300gsm card. 🤷🏻♀️ I’ve now started a case with Epson, although their latest advice is to check the printer nozzles, I don’t think this will fix it 🤣.
Now you're giving conflicting info : quite some time ago you very strongly voiced your contempt for Canon printers and hinted you were to go back with Epsom! Yet here you are still using Canon, tell us please, why have you stayed with this machine you disliked so much.
As mentioned in my video, my opinion has changed. It's mainly based on how much more reliable the canon is when printing on thick card. The reason I hated my canon originally was the issues with the colours, but as you can see I've resolved this now.
Have you considered convincing main stream stores to sell your cards and if so, what are the limitations of a small business like this? Scalability, cost of equipment, or maybe just getting noticed enough to convince people to use your services? Seems fascinating because I work at American Greetings and the profit margins are insane. I admire your work because it seems like a crazy amount of effort goes into this.
I bought an epson a3 printer, cost over £600. after just over a year it went wrong. epson said it was out of production and no spare parts available. I sold it for £50 scrap. wouldn't buy another epson. ive just bought a used canon ip8750 that works great, the print count on it is an unbelievable 66 thousand prints. Epson eat your heart out.
I'm so glad you like it. I've been thinking a lot on my original feelings on my Canon IP8750, and I think they've definitely changed. My epson had better colours (in my opinion) but it was extremely tempremental, and wouldn't work with the max gsm it was supposed to.
