Great vid, buddy. It looks fantastic. Pretty much mint condition, eh. Great for a 43 year old game.

@@RetroSpectives I'll definitely be keeping a look out for one of these. I also want to grab a binitone. I'm sure mine was the MK 6. I had it for many year's. I was looking for it recently at my moms house, and I'd totally forgotten that I'd given it to an old friend. I wish I hadn't, lol. I was always too generous, giving thing's away. I'm glad my wife stopped me doing that when we got married. 😂

@@RetroSpectives Yeah, it's great to still find 80s tech at reasonable prices. I've recently started collecting 80s cassette albums and I was expecting the prices to be hefty, but they're relatively cheap. Most I've bought were around a tenner. I think the lost boys soundtrack was the only one that cost me £20. I got Michael Jackson's Thriller album a few weeks back and that was only a tenner. I was expecting it to be more.

Game days at school? What?! No such thing at mine! Although I do remember on the last day before we broke up we'd all be ushered into the diningroom/gym, be told to sit on the floor, then a teacher would wheel out one of those 20"-ish TV's with a VCR under it and make us watch the Never Ending Sorry for the umpteenth time! A title has never been more apt! In 1981 I was 5 and people were still buying me dolls (which I still detest to this day!) and MLP (which I still love to this day!), these kinds of things weren't even on my radar! I only saw one a year or so ago, I think, on Octavius King's channel. I mainly had Game & Watch's and a few KO ones, which I think are Grandstand, when I was a bit older. I do still have them... Somewhere!

At our school we were allowed to bring in one toy each and we all played on each other's toys and games all day. Some people brought in toys, some board games, and a spattering of electronic games too. I think that's how I ended up playing on an Astro Wars that one time.

I got this one Christmas in the early 80s, the one with the red 'Astro Wars'. Spent hours and hours on it and even used to play it under the covers in bed after bedtime to try and muffle the sound 😄 As with many things from my childhood it just disappeared over time and I don't remember what happened to my original one. Picked up a couple of mint boxed ones (red and white) about 20 years ago from ebay when prices were still cheap and still play them occasionally. The intro tune just brings back so many happy memories 🙂

5:15 - 5:20 I was right about the music. I was not sure about the battery size, but C type or torch batteries as we called them at home are what's required by the look of it, not sure why I thought it took two and not four, but there you go. Seems I was correct about Argos as well. We had the yellow one with the big red button, as well, but it was a version of Frogger.

Time makes the memory go fuzzy. I'm quite often surprised when I actually look things up, how different they actually were from how I remember. And yes, you were right about that buzzer! It's tolerable, but still could do with going down a notch. I'll be selling this Astro Wars on, but if I was keeping it I'd go inside and muffle the beeper. Bit of gaffa tape over the sound hole works wonders!

I had one of these which I nearly launched through the window! Got it for Christmas one year along with scramble and it come with a grandstand power adapter and anyone from the 80s will remember them! They had a variable voltage, polarity switch and a 4 way head with a break out PP3 breakout from the 4 way adapter! Anyone who had one will know they where a nightmare, you would be in the middle of a game and all of a sudden the power would go or the game would power on and restart! I do not think I ever had one of them adapters that ever worked and back then batteries where expensive so the only cost effective way was to use these adapters! I still see red to this day when I think of them! Please tell me it wasn't only me that had the problem with them? Other than that, the game was brilliant! Brilliant video as always Steve sir!

Most of the time back then we'd use generic universal adaptors if they weren't included. Tandy were good for those. You weren't the only one though; I had a couple of devices that had loose power cable connections, normally if the device was getting on a bit. Thanks for watching, and thanks for the compliment! 😄👍

This wonderfully magical story has remained a part of my Christmas ever since. My children love it too and it has been a huge pleasure to share it with grandchildren, who also feel its magic. The choice of Victor Hely Hutchinson's spine-tingling Carol Symphony was perfect; I'm sure it is the reason The First Nowell is one of my favourite traditional carols. As a church organist, I always make sure it is included in carol services. The Children of Green Knowe, by Lucy Boston, was similarly special and is still watched at Christmas in my family.

@RetroSpectives 15 дней назад
I hadn't heard of Children of the Green Knowe until someone mentioned it in the comments. I subsequently looked it up and watched a little of it. As for Box of Delights, since making this video it has become a favourite, although this may be because my wife and I went to see the live show last November at the Royal Shakespeare Theatre in Stratford. It was an amazing experience I'll treasure for as long as I still have a memory.
