I can see why the genre died. Of course there's the classics but in terms of evolving most of these games just look horrible in their choice of art style trying to be different or just an explosion of chaos on screen with a royal rumble of characters or a light show so I'm grateful to be old enough that my introduction to the genre was double dragon final fight streets of rage golden axe and the one that criminally wasn't in the list bad dudes vs dragon ninja
excellent list... I would add Untitled Goose Game and Pico Park also.. I play with my kids all the time and its a blast. Pokemon Lets Go also, but you have to read a lot for them lol
@@ClassicCo-op TI-99 and Intellivision are 16-bit. And technically the arcade offering too, since it is not a console system, with the second of its two main processors able to run in 16 or 32-bit mode.
Great video! Even if you missed a favorite of mine haha. I'm pretty sure all of Faceball 2000 on the Gameboy can be played through co-op along with it's death match mode.
@@ClassicCo-op It does! There's not a lot of video evidence but its instruction manual does mention its maze mode (cyberspace) can be played with co-op (as a team) or individually from each other. Whoever solves the maze first on a team completes it for all players and all players can fight back the enemies together. Big childhood game of mine. I haven't tested this feature out in decades though so I'm only going off by the manual to remember correctly. It's arena mode is definitely more documented especially with its apparently possible 16 player mode for a Gameboy.
Fight n rage is fantastic. Fast, smooth, multiple path and endings, good ost ...fight n rage 2 will be even better. What about river city girls (1 and 2)?i have not tried them but they seems to be great too..
@@ClassicCo-op there’s some verticality to some stages if I remember correctly, so not sure if it fits into the beat ‘em up catagory. But it’s a hidden gem of a game.

These videos goes to show how still today the co-op features of gaming is so subutilized. It's always shooters, fighting and some party games that use it. I played Pokemon Emerald when I was a kid and always wondered what if we could play the entire game with another friend, it would be so cool with the double battles aspect.
Agreed. I always wanted a co-op Pokemon! Would be awesome. Have you played cassette beasts? That’s the closest thing I’ve experienced to co-op pokemon (outside of let’s go pikachu).
Alien vs predator did get a release on the super Nintendo but it wasn't nearly as good as the arcade but I still played it all the way thru might of been the first video game I ever beaten
I've been hoping somebody will ad co-op support to The Firemen for decades at this point. It's a fascinating little top-down shooter where the enemies are all different types of fire. Single-player only, but you permanently have an assistant character helping you fight fires. To me it always seemed like it was supposed to be a co-op game but for some reason it never happened. The sequel on PS1 does have simultaneous co-op, so at least there's that.

Trading pokemon lol got me all 3 starters, hitmonchan and hitmonlee, kabuto and omanyte 🎉. But yeah that was crazier than vs mode like mmbn not balancing nothing if someone just started let alone the wrap/fire spin stun locks needed in pokemon stadium on switch online expansion for rental only pokemon (everyone needs a separate switch for gba online though sadly no pokemon games outside gbc base set pokemon tcg). Nice list. I am glad the ds had download play. 1:44 boomer's adventure lol 2:05 nowadays a boomer adventure is finding your own misplaced keys.
Vendetta was an obsession of mine as a teen. Also Revenge of Death Adder. That one was right next to Tower of Doom back in 94 in our old local arcade. Was extremely popular at the arcade too. Everyone played the centaur.
I miss real couch co-op. SoM started my ARPG & co-op love, too. Yes Internet gives the option to play with gazillions of players, but you stay isolated... I also dreamed of more 2-3 player games (akin to SoM) on SNES & more.
Agreed. I only play local co-op. Never got into online gaming. There’s still lots of great co-op indie games coming out. Did you ever play Trinity Trigger? It’s a 3 player arpg inspired by Secret of Mana. I’m enjoying it with my daughter and friend.
