The 1977 Cowboys were the last NFL team to lead the league in Total Offense, Total Defense, and win the Super Bowl. This juggernaut squad was 12-2 in the regular season and they outscored their playoff opponents 87-23.
I was in the Army at Fort Ord when this game was played. I remember the disappointment I felt eleven orb twelve years earlier when Dallas lost the NFC championship game to the 49ers because of “the catch” (RIP Dwight Clark). I bet every officer in my unit a six pack of whatever beer they wanted that Dallas would win this game. This play pretty much sealed the win for Dallas and I was as elated as the Cowboys had to be when this play happened. This win erased a decade’s worth of frustration. Easily the most memorable and satisfying Cowboys win I’ve ever seen. I’m 54, so I am roughly the same age as many of the 90s Cowboys. What wonderful time it was to be a Cowboys fan back then.
Aikman was right. They don't get that coverage if Irvin is there. The reason most of those passes went to Harper running the hook is because the coverage was on Michael. No chance the 49ers leave one DB out there on an island with Irvin.
Brodie was terrific. Like to. See. Him in the hall Gabriel. Was. Also. Excellent. Plunkett. Not. Eligible. Bylaws. State you must. Make atleast 1 probowl. Or allpro team. To be eligible. Plunkett didnt make either
Pat Sumerall did a great job and you can tell he wrote the script to this too. Too bad Thomas didn't last too long in the NFL. He had a lot of talent but didn't seem to have his head right. Or else he wasn't willing to keep going in the rough and tumble NFL. Those guys take a beating every game.
Hahahaha, the Cowboys beat the Redskins in more playoff games AND Super Bowls. Let's see...in regular season games too....hahaha. Dude, you tell funny jokes. Must be embarrassin to be a Redskins fan. Actually, it must suck.
@@minkymott I'm not a REDSKIN fan. I just hate Dallas. REDSKINS are 2-0 agianst the Cowgirls in the NFC Championship Game. 1972 & 82 when Wimp Danny White got knocked out 😂😂😂😂
@@kennyfutch8783 that's all you got? I got America's Team. Most valuable sports franchise. 3 Superbowls in 4 years. Besides that, I seriously doubt you're a Steelers fan. As soon as I put you and the Redskins in their place, now all of a sudden you're a Steelers' fan. So obvious. Can't take anything you say seriuosly.
I was a teenager and was upset my Cowboys were losing 28-13 and didn't even have the ball with less than 4 minutes to go. I walked to the store and came during the Raiders & Steelers game, middle if the first quarter, I said to no one in particular in a room of about 15 people, the Cowboys will have to wait until next year, everyone in the room looked at me and said the Cowboys won....🎉🎉🎉🎉😂
I remember in a game against the Cardinals, Staubach took off and Howard Cosell said "Roger runs like a sissy". Howard had to get back on national TV and apologize. Roger, of course, was not fazed at all by the comment. He liked Howard.
I was pretty young back then but I watched a lot of Dallas games and although I know he must have been pretty decent, I can't ever remember watching Craig Morton have a great game.
My husbands life is being made into a movie. He was Santa here. He has 2 father's who are on the WALL OF FAME. The one who raised him the famous Prescott Sullivan San Francisco Examiner Sports writer, and Ernie Nevers. Ernie holds the oldest NFL record, was the first Inductee in the NFL Hall of Fame, saved the NFL, pitched to Babe Ruth, and invented the hook shot in Basket Ball. Anyone know how to see that hall of fame for the 49ers online?
A similar shocking upset happened in 1975 when the 48-34 Golden State Warriors, expected to be swept by the 60-22 Washington Bullets in the NBA Final, instead won the title in four games themselves, leaving the Bullets thinking WTF?
Having a better record (12-2 to 10-4) it makes sense the Rams would be favored, but less so when you consider Dallas dominated LA on opening day in Texas Stadium, 18-7.
This was when football was a man’s game not the dulluted game now . Back then ever team had hall of fame players shame the talent lever is terrible they only care about money and gambling why penalty’s and refs control todays game . But thank you for the kind personwho posted these games I really appreciate watching real football gosh I miss it .
dont believe the rozelle hype football was always about gambling which is why they posted the point spreads and the over/under the difference now is that is lots more money the salary cap is absurd....this is a multi-billion dollar biz
Love the music in all these old NFL highlights 1970's and before. For me the best "tune" was @9:22 into video. That with Pat Summerall voice: dynamite.
Back when men were men and there were no doubts. Great defensive struggle. Both teams had tough D. What memories. I remember ALL these names and players. "Nasty" Cedric Hardman was the first iteration of Charles Haley. Roger was just a game wrecker. Howard Cosell called him "Roger, the dodger, the artful one." Clearly the difference in this game. Look at that! Walt Garrison (RIP) and Ditka (RIP) and Dan Reeves, Lee Roy Jordan (?) (RIP), Landry (RIP) .... Thanks,
Bob Lilly was an amazing player . He and the Dallas defense were incredible . It was so sweet to finally win the super bowl after dissapointments in 1970. The cowboys sometimes take a licking but keep on ticking never giving up to that focus of winning. So proud I am a cowboy fan since 7 yrs old
This was so sweet. Going back to super bowl again this time to go and win it which they did vs Denver Tarkenton was an amazing quarterback guided the Vikings to 4 Super Bowls. The purple people eaters a very good team
Looks like Hardeman was tough to get in on and lay a solid block to because he used his arms to keep blockers off him long enough to zip right by them. Must have been a nighmare trying to control someone with his speed, using the technique he employed. Lilly was also good with that but did not have, or need, Hardeman's speed, since he played inside.
The 71 Cowboys remain the greatest team in franchise history. 10 hall of famers started, TEN. Led the league in total offense, and points scored. Third in total defense. Secind in yards per rush allowed, and yards rushing allowed. Outgained their opponents by 110 yards per game, the 4th largest margin in the 14 game season era. Allowed 18 points in 3 playoff games. An average of 6 points a game. Staubach led the league in passer rating. Won thier last 10 games in a row. This team had everything.
