I would disagree about Star Wars The Phantom Menace what's a new take on things they tried something different Meg Ryan was good improve of life and so was Russell Crowe
No offense but your hardly making any arguments or points as to why these films are relevant. Mainly seems like you like these films or in your opinion the EFX are still good. Heck Westworld has zero relevancy to today. Say 2001 A Space Odyssey as on the list. This film is relevant today as it deals with rations, gravity and other real world facts of space IE no sound in the vacuum of space which 2001 illustrates perfectly or its portrayal of a space station, which spins to simulate gravity etc. Logan's run relevancy seems to be young people are spoiled, lazy and when they do reach 21-30yr they realize, NO MORE mom and dad and maybe over reliance on automation or AI. Soylent Green it shows government and corporate corruption , global warming and the woes of the poor. Lastly Omega man shows germ war fare could easily happen now as is could back in the 70's etc. Just saying hardly a thing was said regarding relevancy.
I completely disagree with The Wild Bunch review - it's always referred to as a western whose deliberately intense violence is a "condemnation" of violence - absolute rubbish. Slow motion doesn't do anything other than stylize and glorify the shoot-em-up if your film doesn't focus on the aftermath and what was lost in the fighting. The gang leaves that town quickly, never to return to the plight of its characters again. All the civilians killed were just set dressing, and completely ignored by the plot. No relative of the deceased comes to collect, no butterfly effects spring from the senseless body count - the film has its glorified shoot out and moves on. The end of the film is literally a montage of the Killers laughing together. Remembering "happier times" like when they stopped to rest after massacring that first town and told a few jokes. Their former gang member turned lawman mourns their deaths like they were fallen angels, not villains. The camera slowly pans over the mountain of bodies they took with them to their deaths like it's a remarkable feat of persistence and toughness. It's a movie 100% sympathetic to The Wild Bunch and their gang, and that doesn't hold up well today unless you're literally a member of a bloodthirsty group killing for money. Awful message to a well-shot film
Regarding 2:02 - Five years later Spielberg and Lucas wanted Sean Connery back for 2008's "Kingdom Of The Crystal Skull," and I would imagine there were offers coming his way to the end of his life. I seriously doubt "League Of Extraordinary Gentlemen" actually "torpedoed" Connery's career. Much more likely he was just at a point where he was ready to step outside of the lime light.
Paul Newman’s plan worked like a charm. People flocked to the crappy movie like they do to bad news. The Parents Music Resource Center had the same effect with the Parental Advisory stickers. I never believed parents actually created that. They might have, but what a way to increase sales.
Great "modern" Westerns post 1980, Silverado, Three Amigos, Dances with Wolves, Tombstone, The Unforgiven, My personal favorite The Salvation, Open Range, Django, The Revenant, Wyatt Earp, 3:10 to Yuma, Young Guns, Broken Trail and modern/Modern day: Hell or High Water& Wind River. That's my list..
Rollerball was a fun sports movie, but it's political commentary about corporatocracy is in point and why I think it should be required watching. If you can't see American society heading that direction, you're blind.
These are all films where the story and, in most cases actually good acting, carried the viewer along. I would daresay, if a director could be trusted to make a like for like version, the would all be just as good now. Don't change anything, just use modern CGI and sets/SFX/Sound.
