The fact he didn't play is not nescessarily a sign of upside. When you think about it he could not beat out Jimmy G or Purdy, after haveing been with Kyle Shanahan for multiple years. Kyle has decided Purdy was better than Lance and they are in the NFC Championship game with him.....again. He may be hood but Shanahan doesn't think so.
