I love these old movies. We don't see these kinds of movies anymore. Now most movies don't even make sense.

A great favorite among many public domain movies in my DVD collection. I praise Seymour Hicks' portrail of Ebenezer Scooge very much.

This is utterly brilliant - just started watching, no comparison to anything today b/c it is far far superior. True writing, acting, directing and filmmaking in EVERY sense of the word.

Fact: Seymour Hicks portrayed Scrooge in the 1901 stage play and the 1913 silent film.

I'm sorry but this version is awful. The pace is rushed, the acting is unconvincing, none of the characters are likable & we barely get to see Marley. And that band at the beginning - oof! They couldn't have played worse if they tried. There are too many versions of this story but only 3 that I really enjoy - Give me Alistair Sim, Albert Finney and George C. Scott! Those movies are king; I can leave the rest like yesterday's gruel.

First and very worst film adaptation. Compared to 1951s version starring Alastair Sim, this one is unwatchable.
@johnking5174

It was made in 1935, a very different era of the cinema than the 40s or 50s.

The best one is the Christmas Carol made in 1938 none of the rest of them can even come close to that one.

I love discovering different versions of this story, this one is truly great! There are scenes and dialogue which may come from the book (I did read it once, a long time ago!), but first I'd seen on video. Love the actor's version of Scrooge - that hair is spot-on!

I’ve watched different years of this movie that was made and I love them all. This one was made in 1935, another was made years later similar but in color and it shows what the spirits looked like and shows Tiny Tim in the end of the movie in better health walking with no crutch anymore. This story is a classic and I watch it every year in December…🙂🥰 So worth watching…..

Think about this ... the film was made almost exactly 100 years from when Dickens wrote the novel. Yet, in rural and poor industrial areas, life had not changed much!

It’s done in the style of German Expressionism, hence the effects of light and shadow, which truly captures the 19th century England as set in 1843. It’s an incredible film in all aspects!

Hollywood fantasy: a woman appearing about 30-ish with a dozen or more stair-step children ~ and a corset can still give her a 19" waist. Ms. Scarlet in Gone with the Wind couldn't get that after one child. 🤣

I don’t think a woman blessed with a child even cares about a 19” waist!!!

The movie was made in The United Kingdom so it is hardly a Hollywood fantasy.

People one hundred plus years ago didn't have access to the food calories we do today. Most were very thin. We are even amazed when we look at our family photos from the 60's. Everyone was thin.
