This tournament was basically the fifth Slam in the late 80s, 128 man field and all matches 5 sets. Changed to a smaller draw and 3 set matches from 1990

The AT&T challenge was originally an indoor tournament from about 86 I think. Became an atp tour tournament in 92!

It's crazy how it's so slow back then. They slow the courts now by changing the ground composition but it's still way faster than this.

If you read andre’s book, you know that these two had a heated history. Turango used to cheat in the juniors when the players made their own calls.

Chang with his anti-tennis. He had to much success for his horrible game.

Agassi was one of the very few players I ever saw annihilate McEnroe (the best ever, imo) playing like this.
@Woodland26

what forehand grip did he use? Not like the current crop of players. Was it due to different racquet allowing different techniques?
@datacipher

semi-western. If you want to break it down further it varied slightly between full semi-western and a bit more eastern depending on incoming ball. Much like MANY players today.
@Woodland26

@@datacipher thanks! I pick up the game again lately and feel completely different game now. My buddy hits high bounce top spin whereas mine is flat return. The teenage girl next court was hitting the ball so hard put me to complete shame.

I played tennis regularly from the ages 12-18 and know the game well. Agassi's consistent hitting at/near the sweetspot of the string bed is so amazing! No mis-hits! Super talent!

Mayotte had a brilliant head to head against Chang, 3-0. It underlined the problem Chang had throughout his career. On faster courts in particular, he could be smothered by more powerful opponents

I think I'm not getting as much back swing as the sky he keeps his arm a lot looser than mine and he really swings that thing like a fly swatter can only imagine that's how he's hitting the ball way out in front of his body and the s*** out of it

The sky beat Jimmy Connors and must become number one the world that's hard to do considering how good Jimmy Connors was beating back around at that time can only consider how good this guy must have been he was able to mix it up use a lot of spins and junk and that would throw their games off I think he the guy that beat him was Manuel Santana or did a background check that guy knocked him out that was one of the best Mexican Spanish players of the day this guy was an excellent diet hitting short angles which would run you clear off the court all day long
