Thank you for the tips. I didn't think to just put clay on a wooden board. I was using a lid as a shallow tub to fill monster clay in and trying to carve and push. But this clay seems much more productive than what I was trying to do.

Awesome video. I'm more of a fabricator you could say rather than a sculptor. One trick I used recently to polish an inside corner on 3 planes in quartzite was a triangle multi tool attachment with both sandpaper cut to wrap around the bottom and edge of the attachment as well as triangle shaped electroplated diamond pads found on amazon.

I loved your video- had a really hard time hearing it even with my computer and external speakers up at 100%. Finally emailed it to myself to listen to with earbuds on my phone while watching it on my computer so I could see all of the beautiful details. Hope you will do some videos on how you cast your completed pieces. PLEASSSSSE!!!

Hello Steve. I admire your work. Your tutorial is absolutely Wei done. Steve , I purchased a 6 feet brown stone sculpture from someone who had a dog in the house peeing constantly on the round base of it. The person used any kind of harsh spray cleaner on that area for several years . The marble is absolutely gorgeous with several shades of shiny smooth brown . Unfortunately the lower part of the sculpture and the entire round base looks flat . My question is what do you recommend to bring the shine back ? Is there any material out there that I can use and polish it ? Thanks a million and I wish you could return and post your tutorials here. You are incredibly talented . Best

abrasive stone can be substituted with thee old fashioned wood, used with loose grit...use various sieves to grade crushed sandstone or dirt if desperate, sandstone is an excellent abrasive in its own right...sharpening stones are good for granite...my favorite is sifted and graded sand mixed with black cement, once cured (one month) is perfect for soft stone.

You're carving very inefficiently and are fundamentally wrong about the entire process. To begin with, totally wrong about how a baseball bat is swung. Not at all with that swinging motion from the shoulder. If baseball, then we should talk not about swinging, but throwing the ball. For we essentially throw the hammer at the chisel. The shoulder ROTATES. As it rotates the arm bent at the elbow straightens, then comes the cocked wrist flexing downward. It's like throwing a baseball out of a moving vehicle, one speed is added to the previous, increasing velocity and velocity plus mass equals force. Your technique comes closer to granite carving, where the hammer rebounds from the chisel more focefully and allows the carver to sort of dribble the hammer like a basketball. But marble must be struck differently. To prevent stunting the blow must be more like cracking an egg on the edge of a pan, and not smashing the egg down over the edge, but sort of a snap. This snap is all about wrist movement. If not the snap at the end you're going to be blunt force and smash the egg to goo all over the kitchen. Also, the elbow can't be flapping around in mid air like that, but must be close to the torso, with the upper arm hanging directly below the shoulder. You could even slip a piece of paper between elbow and torso to train, getting so the paper never slips out. Another thing about the wrist. If it is not cocked backwards but held up at a right angle to the forearm the the grip will have to tense up to stay in control. With a flexed wrist the weight of the hammer is balanced and the grip can be very lose. This is extremely important as it allows that light touch that allows the egg-crack on the side of the pan. A tight grip will not allow rebound in the hammer head and the momentum will crush the egg, ie, stunt the marble crystals. Even granite carving retains these principles. The granite point should sort of explode. Not driven in, but an explosive crack to fracture the stone. I can't understand how the technique you promote could possibly be in common practice ... but I guess the "expert syndrom" where the wrong technique is automatically accepted from the more experienced. Simply paying attention to what happens will show you how to not do it ... then after doing it not right enough one will stumble upon one's correct way. Just be sensitive to what's happening and forget the experts.

the elbow swings in heavier point work. In medium to light work it stays at the torso.

WOW, what a wealth of solid information! Thank you for taking the time to tell us about your sculpting supplies for marble. I'm here in the US and have yet to find a marble source, but found one nearby selling limestone. I assume these tools will work with any hard stone, essentially. I'm in the NWest where its easier to get granite than the costlier stone. Just a little worried it will wear down my tool sets. On to part 2! Looking forward to any info on carving or actual sculpting. You have a great setup, impressive! Can you tell us your air filtration system? Looks like you built or purchased 2 wide vacuum intakes for a dust extractor setup. I will try that next. The grinders really kick out a ton of nasty dust but I think I can cut most of it out as I want to work indoors if possible. Thanks again.

Thank you for the presentation. I noticed many very interesting diamond coated burrs. I suggest that each time you show a new item in the distance you also add a close up view of it. As you did several times, but not for all tools. Because there are people such as me who really listen carefully at all what you say and of course when the small tool is in your hand at 2 m distance we will try hard to distinguish it. I saw the name of the supplier for some of the diamond coated burrs and I will have a look at these tools there. THANKS! Wow, just what the doctor ordered. I am excited to expand my knowledge base in all things Stone carving. I have been sculpting for years but I admit I do not have the answers and lots of questions. I had aspirations when I went to RU-vid last night to maybe view a couple Stone carving videos and pick up a thing or two. To my delight I stumbled cross something that I have only dreamed of. An articulate intelligent instructor to share with me all aspects of stone sculpting in a concise practical manner. To my surprise my dream came true. This might be old news but for some of you or this could be just what you were looking for. And what a unique way to help support this art form and these two Stone carving apostles. The sculpting world needs our help to preserve this knowledge and carry it forward to the generations that follow. I love the unique way they set up a patronage support method in stead of an advertising clickbait way to help this endeavor succeed. What is Sculpting Stone? Sculpting Stone is an educational documentary project aimed at preserving and promoting knowledge about stone sculpture, and making sure that it is available for free for people all over the world. It will feature a comprehensive video series and website which will serve as a digital hub for information related to the art, craft and history of carving stone Steve Shaheen www.patreon.com/Sculpting_Stone
