Even though Richard Jewell was innocent, it's crazy how much stuff made it look like he really was the bomber. Each time something came up that made him look guilty, my dad and I were just left flabbergasted.

@@IphigeniaAtAulis Nah, that's an M-16 looks like. Fixed stock. And that looks like a 20" barrel. This was in the like 1996-97 I believe. Gun ban was 1994. He could have easily bought it before the ban and still been in possession of it.

From my understanding, tax evasion does not really result in jail time unless you are found to be lying about your taxes. If you don’t actually report your recorded income they will just fine you and force you to pay, and if you refuse to pay after that audit that’s when they jail you. Uncle Sam just wants his money. It’s easier to just have you pay it then jail you.
@showlegacy619 If, during the course of a search warrant for evidence related to a crime, evidence of other crimes are discovered you can absolutely be charged with those other crimes. What most likely happened in this case was that he wasn't charged with tax-related crimes (or a quiet deal was made later to allow him to pay restitution) was that the optics were so bad that charging him with tax crime after falsely dragging him through the public wringer would have been very bad PR.
@189KansasCity my guess is based entirely on the movie, and it’s just a guess. Again, I’m not criticizing him at all. We all have cards we have to play, and Richard played them well. He was a hero.
