Actually, now I remember than the 2CV had to pass a crash test in 1980 in France when Citroën added front disc brakes. I don't know if the results are available somewhere (except that we know they were positive at the time)
You're right. I mistaken it with the 652cc engine fitted on the Citroën Visa. I'll look for the test results as well, but I'm not surprised by those results, since the light construction 2CV act like passive safety, when on the other hand, others cars tried to be as sturdy and resistant as possible, resulting in cars that are indeed less prone to deform on impact, but smashing the driver and passengers inside it. I remember that in this range, the Renault 4 and Trabant are safer than they look.
actually the engine never grew bigger than 602cc. But the 2CV isn't as bad in a crash as people think it is. Jeroen Cats has a group test (from the late seventies i think) on his page, were 2cv came out second to the VW Polo, but ahead of a whole bunch of other newer cars of the same class. I think it was either ADAC or AutoBild that performed the tests.
we had xm and bx. XM was slow, heavy and it was more in the garage than on the road (after 96000km). BX was worse in every single thing you can find. Today my family has Audi A6 (1996) and Skoda Superb (2010) and I´m driving Ford Mondeo (1998). All 3 cars are cheaper, faster, not less comfortable and better built than XM and after years and +100000km, they are fu*king more reliable. Sorry, but If you had 3 citroens wich were OK, you´re just lucky. The last good Citroen was Citroen DS.
I like the ride in the rollce royce and it is hydropneumatic, and belive me the system has changed, on the Ds there were 5 spheres for the suspension, one for each wheel and a main accumulator and pretty much no electrick controll. On the newer systems there is alot of new spheres and more electric to control the suspension and adjust it if nessecary 400 times per second, hasn't changed right? not reliable? my family hasn't had any problems on any citroens we've had xm c5 gen 2 and gen 3
I have a Citroen C5 2.0HDI 16V Exclusive with hydroactive III suspension from 2004 , the spheres are still the original ones and I still driving the car everyday.
You have absolutely no idea how that system works. It is the same system. There aren´t any important technological innovations. Btw... if you want good suspension system and you have broken your ass, choose some air-using system. It is much better for driving and not bad for comfort. It is cheaper and air is more reliable than liquid. Think smart, don´t buy the French cars. And once more... WAKE UP, it´s 2012. :)
