that''s why there are so many car manufacturers making so many different cars with so many different features in so many different colors. It does seem that the Beech, the Spit and the P-51 do share a top billing. However, my favorite A/c have been my Stearman and my Meyers 200.
Last time I was there was 1986. My father and associates built Hotel Borrego de Oro at Punta Chivato in 1964. Long and expensive process for first class by American standards. Many lavish dinners on that deck over looking the water. One late afternoon one of the co owners flew a Twin Bonanza past that deck at level height. Impressive.
According to my own statement, it was 1974 when I made my first trip there. I would have thought that it was more like 1970? But why argue with myself? At that first trip into Chivato the hotel was the only thing there, and it was stripped of all non-concrete items!! Really scary to think about it! But it must have been beautiful when competed! Why did the venture fail? It has intrigued me ever since! On this Video about 12 years later there was the new big B&B and numerous concrete house being built along the shore. The hotel was still abandoned but sorta looked like maybe it had been restored for a while, and then abandoned again? My own opinion about the location is that while it is beautiful, it is too remote to attract enough visitors to make it a profitable venture? Then again, it is just a stone's throw away from Serenidad, and Serenidad has always had visitors. It's a puzzle to me? Really happy to hear your comments.
Not real fast but reliable. An Unlimited Pilot said to me once "That thing can fly for 2 weeks straight". A shame she wasn't able to survive the last Air Race. Never a fan, but always great respect. Thank you to the Sanders family for being major supporters of the Reno Air Races.
Que espantoso el sonido.!! A este tipo no se le dio por tapar ni que sea con la mano desde el lado de donde soplaba el viento.!! Que falta de imaginacion.!!
Very cool video. Thanks for sharing. Cool to see the airport before it was developed. Not many videos of flying out there like this before GoPros. Love the super 8 footage
I never get tired of watching these old videos, BC. Lots of water under the bridge with all of us since we flew for you all those decades ago. Brings a tear to me old eye, remembering. JW (Jim) and I are still in contact. I have no idea where BS has been these past years. And learning just today that JW #1 (John) has been with Southwest these past years was a surprise. As with you, I heard nothing after his "unpleasantness" with the PBY on the water pickup at Lake Wohlford. CN
I used to fly down from Petaluma in my airplane to San Martin airport. The restaurant had a courtesy car to pick up pilots. Always a super fun place to take friends for Restaurant Flying! Day or night.
Indeed a very beautiful airplane. The craftsmanship of its airframe are second to none. I was sad to learn of its crash killing its builder. Think the cause of the crash was something to do with its propeller. Interestingly enough, Howard Hughes had the same problem on his H-1. Thanks for sharing this video.
An interesting concept in the evolution of the aeroplane. However, the "most beautiful" appelation is wide of the mark. That surely belongs to Concorde....a breathtaking design that lifts the spirit as surely as it lifts the eyes!
I saw this plane at Airventure in Oshkosh years ago. It was truly a work of art! You have to remember when it was originally designed and built to fully appreciate it! It was so sad to hear about the crash, RIP!
I’m still saying that the Japanese copied this design to create the Zero. Although not as well executed as the H-1. I do believe that had Howard Hughes not had his health issues he would have given Kelly Johnson a run for his money. Imagine what the H-1 could have done had they had access to the same Merlin Engine that sits in the P-51. Wouldn’t mind seeing a replica H-1 with a big P&W Turbo Prop just to see what it could do. Obviously not with a wooden frame though.
So much innovation went into this airplane, by Howard Hughs. it was the first to have flush rivets and making the seams tight, all of that was new. Everything on that airplane was done for speed, he wanted the speed records. It also had a short wing, for shorter speed records, don't know if it ever flew with the short wing. Up to that time, planes had domed rivets that stuck out, caused drag. He taught the rest how to make airplanes.
I think the crash was the result of running out of fuel is that right That's that's what I remember about the loss of this aircraft but yes it is gorgeous I've done metal work and it's not easy One slip of the bucking bar and you've ruined the skin
Imagine how fast this thing could go if it had an R-2800 and a 4 bladed prop??? The blades would probably hit the ground, though. What if you gave it gull wings so the prop would clear the ground? Hey, wait a cotton pickin' minute!
Hi y'all. Amazing! Today; January 16th, 2023, I checked into my email account that I use for youTube mostly and saw that I had around 75 new comments all of a sudden???? Don't know what has caused that, but? As usual there are some comments about the poor video quality and camermanship. I am really sorry that I didn't have better equipment that an old VHS-C minicam. For that matter, I am really regretful that my vast collection of A/C Pix taken over the last 80 years weren't done in better cameras; but that was what was. Por examplo: Flying my PT-22 circa 1957 using an 8mm windup camera ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-jJF-4WRcSJQ.html. Getting back to the comments: it would be a toss-up between the Beech Staggerwing, the P-51 and the Spitfire as getting the most votes on what was the most beautiful A/C. And then many more scattered around such as the SST, etc. I do wonder what caused the sudden surge in comments?? 1.6K totals?? Whoa Nellie!
