Get a real look into my small woodturning shop and my processes (or lack of processes, sometimes) for creating a variety of projects. I'm self-taught, so I may not do everything the "right" way... I like to figure out my own methods. As a budget-conscious woodturner, my equipment is basic and my wood is usually salvaged. Videos of my latest woodturning projects, which range from simple, utilitarian pieces to unusual carved and abstract turnings, are much of what you will find on my channel. I love to explore materials and techniques, so I'm sure there will be other things along the way as well, including furniture repair/refinishing and likely some random experiments and projects. Please subscribe and thanks for stopping by!

Chad thank-you for the very detailed video on the making of your Star Finial Box. As a new turner I appreciate the sharing of information regarding design and proceedure, its been a great help to speed up the learning curve. A couple of quick questions if I may, what size is this piece, my guess is about4-5 in. dia. Second, when ebonising the finial and base, what type of dye did you use. Thanks, really like your work and videos, and no they are not too long or detailed for the novice,

ThanksI have done the same for the last few years. If you don't need the bowls any time soon eventually you will have enough that you will always have dry stock. Recently I have had needs and no dry stock to use. I have found that one or two hour stints in our convection oven on the lowest setting of 140 deg works wonders.

This was a very good teaching video. You showed how to correct mistakes. You showed him not to panic when you have a catch and you showed how to deal with an irregular shaped piece of wood.

Ha! (11:59) Got pretty good cut, so sanding should go smoothly! Seriously, tho, Great job. I thought, after that crack about sanding going smoothly, you would talk about turning air. I love catalpa wood; it smells almost like motor oil, and will not rot( I use catalpa for other outdoor projects). Im liking and subscribing cuz of your plain style of talking and NO MUSIC.

Although the end result looks good, here are some tipps. I work almost exclusively with recycling old skateboards. I’m also turning plenty of bowls and other pieces on the lathe from this marerial. 1. Sand the decks before you cut them, it’s much quicker and cleaner. I recommend an angle grinder with flap discs. 2. You didn’t sand all the laquer and old graphics / debirs and skate wax off, I was terrified for you. That kind of glue up on a bowl blank?? Lucky that only one outer layer flew off. This blank could have exploded on you in a really dangerous way. It is plywood after all. So if you glue 20 layers of skateboards together, you’ll have 19 glue joints + the 6 glue joints inside each skateboard layer. Adding to it, this is hard maple plywood, so not easy to turn regardless. This could have ended very differently, only one glue joint needs to fail for a blank lile this to become a projectile. Please be careful. 3. As you surely noticed, the decks have concave. Which is why your sanding attempts didn’t do too well on a flat belt sander. This concave requires you to match the pieces better and apply more clamping force than usual. I use a press with a hydraulic jack to clamp up bowl blanks. This ensures good contact between layers and safe (as safe as possible) turning. Don’t be discouraged by my words, this is just a bit different from your regular wood. So much fun, once you made actual lumber out of the old decks!

Chad why didnt you leave a foot on that bowl, you had a nice looking profile for a foot at one point but ultimately your left with a bowl of sorts that if anything is put in it it will just fall over.
