It seems like more than half the process is missing from the video. Did you cut it out on a lathe? Did you drill the grub screw hole by hand? How did you re align it to do the bevel on the bottom side?

Nicely done. The idiot-proofing is a good Idea. It's too easy to put in a part the wrong way (espetially when making dozens). If your are heaving troubles with burrs raising on polymer and composite materials try increasing the feedrate (within reason of course and I'm not saying your recepie is wrong). Also: Doesn't the second magazine interfere with your cheekweld? Have you playtested it jet, how does it affect you sight-picture?
@makeandmachine7698
@makeandmachine7698 6 лет назад
Thank you. The recipe was definitely not perfect, in fact these were originally intended to be test pieces. If I was making a batch I'd invest in some plastic specific end mills and improve the feeds and speeds for sure. This clamp was made for someone else, so I didn't get a chance to test it myself unfortunately.

Yeah it's a Tormach SuperFly fly cutter. You can buy it directly from Tormach. Also Little Machine Shop stock Tormachstuff , but I don't know if they stock that tool specifically.

What is the price for a custom outer barrel for VSR?
@makeandmachine7698
@makeandmachine7698 7 лет назад
This was a few hundred pounds because it's a custom one-off design with 5 separate parts. If we offer these for sale in the future they'll be cheaper, hopefully under £300. You can sign up for our newsletter (footer of our website) so you'll get an email when they're available to order.
@SinOfAugust
@SinOfAugust 7 лет назад
I've ordered from you before, I think am already getting your mail - that's the only reason I found this video. I, too, hope that your barrels will be cheaper than 300 pounds. A lot cheaper ;]
@makeandmachine7698
@makeandmachine7698 7 лет назад
Ah excellent, thanks for clicking through! The materials are quite expensive, because just the carbon fibre tube is over £50. We'll be looking to get this reduced though if we can buy in bulk. We should have the first barrel finished in the next 2 weeks at which point we'll have a much better idea of the overall production time.

Would be a nicer surface on top of the side parts if you would use a 5 axis mashine and carbide end mills :) But nice video
@makeandmachine7698
@makeandmachine7698 7 лет назад
Einfach Fredhaft All the end mills are carbide, mostly uncoated which is probably why they look like high speed steel. I'd love a 5 axis machine but I'd have to spend more than 10 times what I paid for the Tormach! One day maybe. It would be great to use the fly cutter on all surfaces. But the surface imperfections always look worse on camera, plus the polishing at the end makes them more obvious. In person the surface finish is pretty good. This part is probably going to be painted by the customer for concealment in the field anyway. Polishing was mostly just for my own amusement.

You can make deeper and more aggressive cuts on brass. Saves time & money. But I get it, this is a demo and not production!
@Abipso
@Abipso 8 лет назад
Which way do you make sure that the barrel is well positionned, i.e. the new hop-up window is in the right direction comparded to the machinings for the hp-up bucking and chamber ? If it's the wrong direction, there is a risk of side spin of the bb.
@makeandmachine7698
@makeandmachine7698 8 лет назад
Yeah that's right, we REALLY don't want to cut it at an angle! I clamp a precision parallel to the barrel across the existing window, then run an indicator along it. So the window is square to +-0.005mm over about 50mm. More precise than it needs to be but I like to be sure. That's where most of the time is spent during setup.
@makeandmachine7698
@makeandmachine7698 8 лет назад
I should add, I now clamp the barrels in a rotary table, so it's easier to rotate the barrel square. I'd like to do an updated video showing the whole process.

What vise is that you are using on the mill?
@makeandmachine7698
@makeandmachine7698 8 лет назад
I have a pair of Gerardi vises. 125mm wide I think. They're great for the money, but Gerardi's soft jaws are really expensive. Carvesmart don't make compatible master jaws so I'm thinking about making my own.

Is there anything actually special about the trigger, or is it purely aesthetic?
@samuelmcdonagh1590
@samuelmcdonagh1590 8 лет назад
Oh and do you know when these are available for purchase?
@makeandmachine7698
@makeandmachine7698 8 лет назад
They'll be adjustable, so you can fine tune the trigger pull to be nice and short if you want. That's the next thing to prototype. Also compatible with the BTC Spectre. The shaft is a precision rod, so the trigger should wiggle less and feel smoother when pulled.
