I think one other tip would be to give them a nice cat (like yours!) to sit with them. There are a lot of nonverbal communication opportunities there.

Hey, I’m Georg and 3 years ago I injured my voice while singing. For about 2 years I haven’t been able to talk without pain and swelling feeling at all so I’ve not talked at all. I’ve consulted with my doctors and they’ve told me to exercise speaking regularly even if there’s pain but I want to spread my story to get second opinions. I used to sing a lot for several years before my injury. Some days even about 3 hours a day. Went to singing school sometimes, learn a bit of the (CVT vocal technique) One evening, I started to sing and my voice was not that great that day and I also drank a milk product before what causes my throat to produce a lot of mucus and thick feeling. I tried to sing one high note, but I couldn't reach it, so I squeezed my neck and vocal chords to get that high note and that’s how I injured my voice. From that day on my vocal injury has gone worse to the point that for 2 years now, I haven’t been speaking at all. Just a couple of words in one year. The reason for it is now when I speak, my vocal chords and thyroid area get “swollen” and painful(nerve pinching pain). I put swollen in brackets, because I’ve been to a laryngoscope and the camera didn’t detect any swelling in my vocal chords when they looked at it. And also they didn’t find anything other than couple of granulomas(not on the vocal chords) which could have been caused by some food intolerance. The vocal chords were just weak and atrophied. Going back to 2021 when I firstly injured my voice. The symptoms then were similar, there was the swelling feeling, and nerve pain. (it’s really weird to me that there was no swelling detected on camera, because when I get the swelling feeling, my whole throat feels so swollen. I even got a thyroid ultrasound, but nothing was detected there) So back then, basically I still could use my voice after the injury. So I had to not speak for a couple of weeks and then the swelling feeling went away. And I could practice again and talk. But as time went on. The swelling came back and back. I gave it more and more rest, to make the swelling go away.(one doctor back then even said that don’t stop speaking, but for me it didn’t make sense cause my throat felt so swollen and nerve pinching pain was quite bad). So I gave it more and more rest and as the time went on, about a year from the injury, I could only speak about 20 minutes a day. And it was difficult to avoid the swelling feeling and pain away, so I gave it more and more rest, until it became so bad that last year I couldn’t even laugh and this swelling feeling came back. It has since got minimally better now, but still I can only laugh about 5 times a day or less. My question is, if I start to practice again and ignore the swelling feeling in my throat and the nerve pain, would it injure me even more. That’s what I’m worried about. If someone told me that “100%, you will not injure your voice more when practicing through the pain”, then I would start. The last doctor said exactly that, but I needed to get a second opinion somewhere else, because I’m scared to injure my vocal chords even worse, to the point that I could lose my vocal chords forever. Thank you for reading it the whole way through and I would love to hear your opinion! Thank you in advance! :)

I’m 14 and I suffer from this. For example instead of saying “actually” I say acshully and I have no clue on how to fix it. What really made me aware of this is when I accidentally said concession the wrong way and my friend laughed at it. That day I broke down crying because I knew that I wasn’t the only person that noticed it. I always told my mom about it but she said I sound completely fine but I know I don’t. The main reason I actively avoid talking to people is because of this issue. I just hope it goes away with time.

Hi. My son is autistic. He started speaking many words meaningfully like Cow, Dog, etc. but when I ask him what's this he never answers. This is happening from 3 the last 3-4 months. Can you please tell us what should we do? We are from India and we already don't listen to his gesture requests.

After my right brain injury from ruptured aneurysm I had a really hard time convincing people I was now a 2-step person. How many times I’d try to explain it they would retort, “oh, it’s really easy. Just go down this hall to the 3rd door on the left. After you turn you will see 2 sets of double doors. Use the…” Once the 3rd part of direction the 1st part would drop off the sequence for me. That followed through the entire set of directions. I just gave up after I tried explaining why I needed written directions (which all too OFTEN still confused me because I’d get lost moving thru each step because I’d have to remember which step I did previously AND figure out what was the next step while trying to figure out what stage of the set of directions I was currently. If you only keep 2 in a sequence, often times the middle step that you are on can be the part you lose. It’s a very bizarre thing. My life has become very small & repetitive because of it so I’m not living a chaotic cycle that is disheartening to myself. ~ but ~ fun fact is that when you don’t really make memories - time has no value. I rarely miss someone that I haven’t seen in a very long time, including my adult aged kids. I had a busy, productive 10-ring circus before I was 38. Now I’m 50 & hang in very tight to the one ball life I live to live peacefully within my head. For anyone else living through this please remember… We may lose memories, but sometimes we don’t lose intelligence. Memory problems is like living a day in the same type of recall as a person that wakes up & can recall a dream & tell it in detail. After 1 day they can remember the basic info of dream theme. A week later they remember very little, maybe just a person or place of that dream. A few weeks later it’s COMPLETELY gone. That’s how I am now.

I’m 19 and my voice is high and often squeaky or not predictable.I work in construction amd people can never hear me. I’m also short and skinny so I’m basically always treated like a kid. I also have major chiropractic issues which no one’s been able to help and I can’t afford more doctors. I wonder if my voice has to do with my structural problems because my jaw started popping and locking up so bad I had to get an orthotic mouth piece to change my bite and I feel strange things in my neck and I have to chew slowly. But then I have like a different voice for yelling if I want to yell really loud but I don’t use it cause people are shocked when they hear it.

I am an 18 year old in college, and I still struggle with conversions. Speech problems made me have low self-esteem. I had "speech therapy" in elementary school, but it seems like I will forever have speech problems no matter what I do. I read books, I talk to people online/in person, I practice my words, and yet I still have problems with it and not just that, but people judge me or make fun of me for that. Some people view me as a child or not smart enough. Whoever is reading this and they have speech problems, just remember you are not alone. I know it sucks having speech problems, but remind yourself that you are strong and smart. Always love yourself and that it is okay making mistakes when it comes to talking. We do not have flirters/autocorrects when we talk. Your flaws in speech are unique.

I'm in Australia and my long distance bff of 8 years had a stroke ladt week. He all.has aphasia on day 9. I managed to call hospitals and found him. The irony is I know him better than his parents I told him but I'm not on next of kin list ad he kept us private because othets don't understand long distance relationships. Now we cannot communicate. It is tragic and I asked nurse just before to please let him know that I know and that he is not alone and I send my love. I don't know if he underst sands rhem. I'm trying to find out if he can have flowers in his room. Thu don't seem to be sure. I am besides myself but can only pray. I don't know we his parents contact details.
