The Greek philosopher Socrates famously said that "the unexamined life is not worth living." Taking this as a starting point, Eric Metaxas thought it would be valuable to create a forum that might encourage busy and successful professionals in thinking about the bigger questions in life. Thus Socrates In The City: Conversations on the Examined Life was born.

Every month or so Socrates In The City sponsors an event in which people can begin a dialogue on "Life, God, and other small topics" by hearing a notable thinker and writer such as Os Guinness or Peter Kreeft. Topics have included "Making Sense Out of Suffering," "The Concept of Evil after 9-11,", and "Can a Scientist Pray?" No question is too big -- in fact, the bigger the better. These events are meant to be both thought-provoking and entertaining, because nowhere is it written that finding answers to life's biggest questions shouldn't be exciting and even, perhaps, fun.

Where your focus goes, energy flows. You magnify your problems when you constantly fixate on the negative...

Very true the more you focus on a problem, the worse it gets. I had diabetes and was asked to take measures 6 times.the very same day i stopped those measurements taking, it was gone. To realise thinking about everytime was stressful and making sugar high. I m free now.. the stress of thinking about a problem can worsen it.

She said you can come out "very strong " after watching Mom be executed... That strength is FUNCTIONAL FREEZE. Trauma is part of life for sure ...but society doesn't allow/guide us through really processing that pain/terror/shock to come out whole. We fracture and fracture and wonder why we struggle with auto immune problems...

totally disagree that depression is a version of entitlement and privilege. Tell that to the people who are deeply depressed. She may not have this experience, but to deny this about others and to claim this is "American" derived is another version of stereotyping inappropriately. Glad her view is different for her, but that is for her and her alone. It is also a reflection of how narrow her world really was - she does elaborate on that -

Oh yeah sure, since you can deal so well with your trauma (calling bullshit though, you don't grow up around corpses and are just normal) eeeeeverybody else can too. This one seems to think people are all the same, pretty stupid 🤷🏻‍♂️

She's a liar! To believe what she said is to believe people have free will. Overall, SHE IS LYING and acting like she didn't suffer pain and/or isn't in pain. The fact that she talks about this is just one small bit of proof that it affected her. If it's not a big deal, then why talk about it? Anyone with an I.Q. of sixty can tell she is talking her emotions on camera. She smiles and acts like she is not affected in any way. She even calls people who are depressed or traumatized "privileged." DISGUSTING! What about all the Jews who suffered far worse treatment in the concentration camps, many of which cried in American soldiers arms, while they were just skin and bone? What about all the mothers and fathers who lost their child to something terrible? Do you see the hypocrisy and complete lack of remorse and selfishness? Again, if your time in North Korea was so normal and "unprivileged," then why talk about? She definitely strikes me as a person with narcissistic personality disorder, coupled with denial. Also, the word privilege is so stupid and misused. She even admitted to making the word fit something it's not. For example, here is the definition of Privilege, according to Google's Oxford Languages citation: Privilege (noun): a special right, advantage, or immunity granted or available only to a particular person or group. Her definition of Privilege: People who are depressed or have trauma should be thankful, because at least they don't live in North Korea. My thoughts: No one is privileged. STILL DON'T BELIEVE ME? She even claims that seeing dead bodies in a tree was normal and it wasn't until she came to America that she found out it was abnormal (0:42). LIES. When she speaks of this, look at her facial changes and eye movements. Listen to her vocals heighten and exaggerate. The only thing truthful about this whole speech is probably her agent knowing she needed help. Also, humans are not resilient by themselves. The Lord makes people resilient.

We need more people and more mindsets like this. Yeah i think it's good to be considerate of others plights and for peeps to vent about their problems to a degree but to let it rule your life so much that it affects every decision and every relationship, because of, "how you feel" can be a real detriment to progression and growth. A feeling will hold you back and stop you a lot of the time. Do the hard thing anyway. Kinda like she's saying, you do those hard things enough, it just becomes the norm.

I think what she experienced IS traumatizing- especially if she saw dead bodies on her street as a young child. Sometimes you do need to talk it out with a therapist, and she can’t decide what’s right for you! I don’t like her callous comments

Just because something is taught as normal, does not mean it is easy to live through. The fact that she's suggesting trauma makes you stronger is incorrect. Conditions like PTSD can protect you, but they are problematic because you are in survival mode 24/7, which ruins your quality of life. I have PTSD myself, and it's a life of constantly looking over your shoulder in panic and stress. You are paranoid every second of every day you will be attacked or hurt in some way, and it brings a lot of early deaths with that feeling.

It's so sad to see people so disconnected from themselves.... there is nothing normal in seeing dead bodies just as seeing trees .... that is the human horror of despicable abuse on a mass scale... every child and human being has the right to feel safe! . No one living in peaceful times and territories sees dead people in their daily lives unless they work in a morgue or are undertakers.... But yes she needs to learn to be strong in order to survive

That's why I never think about the past, I always look to the future. I'm tired of people talking about their "trauma" and their "depression". What is it good for? You live only once, be happy it already happened, no need to live it again and again by talking about it again and again. I seriously think this "talking" and "therapy" is one of the biggest scams of recent history.

Im not sorry for living in a country that allows me to feel how I want, express how I want and live how I want. Honestly, I think its kind of stupid for other people from different countries try and ''call out'' America. In FACT, I hope more do it. Just reminds me that although a lot of you allow politics to play too much of a role in your life. I live here, in the States. Where I can freely say what im feeling and feel how I want Foh with your book 💯💯

This is honestly so disrespectful to families that have lost their loved ones to suicide. 700,000 people die by suicide every year WORLD WIDE, not just in America. over 13,000 people died by suicide in North Korea in 2020. Mental Ilness exists. However people are just forced to silence it. The leading cause of suicide is Major Depressive Disorder. Being depressed and having clinical depression are two different things. A depressed persons brain will look much different than a normal persons brain. You all keep saying "its all in your head" So is Autisim, Alzheimers Diease and brain cancer... Do you not beleive in those? Your brain is connected to your spine. Its called a nervous system. It controlls your whole entire body. I had a seizure that nearly killed me because of Serotonin Syndrome. Thats all in my head too, I had too much serotonin in my brain. It caused me to nearly die. Educate yourselves! I bet if any of you made it far enough into college to take Psych 101 you wouldnt be saying this. Which may I add you dont have to go very far to get there...

She’s right. Trauma and depression are the result of loss, hardships, and abuse. You have the privilege of defining them and trying to deal with it through therapy or medication. Many people around the world have gone through the exact same things as we have, or worse, but have to get through it without anything but their own attitude, simply to survive. And are often well adjusted and grateful.

It is a privelage to have the education and support to understand and learn and heal deep personal trauma and mental health issues. A HUGE privelage. She is correct. We should try to view it that way instead of always condemning the help we do have for mental health here in the US. It is not perfect, but this womans experiences and words show that the reality could be much worse.
