Is that the beautiful Jupiter Quantum MK2 Marching Tuba with the ergonomic first valve tuning slide trigger allows for quick tuning while the extended range main tuning slide offers greater tuning range and a uniform bell thickness that they thinned out to make the horn 5 lbs heavier!?
Scaff crew for Cascades '23- Pros: We had a really close bond (born of cursing at the scaff) Climbing was kinda fun Definitely got way stronger Some great sky appreciation moments Moving heavy shit/chucking the wheels into the truck after the show/block helped me stay emotionally regulated Didn't have to do staff scaff that much Cons: The cascades truck is set up so that the scaff is first off and last on, so we had to disassemble, load the crossbars/boards, let pit load, and then do the sides, so EPL and post-show was a nightmare Getting up 1hr 30min before breakfast to unload before pit Scaff gets really hot in the sun- had some minor burns on my hands Windy days are SCARY 3rd level is SCARY Lectures if it's not perfectly centered/too far back/forwards/not enough levels Had to do podiums too, including show sites- so my makeup got ruined before warmup and my bodytights were GROSS Bare metal was a bad texture :(
Kitchen load both years. Not a bad job, we did get to rummage through some snacks from time to time, but we did have to take care of Schwarm (the garbage disposal hose)…we left that to any member of kitchen load who was late.
the one place I disagree is that if it makes a difference if its considered a sport or not, time and time again (and its getting worse) Marching Band students get completely neglected at senior night while the cheerleaders (considered a athletic) are recognized, money is pulled from their budget to buy new sport uniforms, trophies are not displayed in trophy cases, their accomplishments are not put on the gym wall along with other athletics, they aren't allowed to get a letter jacket, The list goes on, basically to make a long story short the whole "its not a sport" argument is being used by schools to cut their budget and not recognize their accomplishments.
In the full retreat during my high school senior year state finals, the hive mind of high schoolers decided to tilt their heads/shakos to the left and right with the battery. It was a messy in a way I don't know how to describe. Basically people were off beat because it wasn't an organized thing, but the high schooler hive mind agreed to do it. One of the factors contributing to the confusion was that the cadence had an odd number of beats and a rest, so people couldn't agree whether to do an extra tilt during the rest, to stay still, or to whether to reset directions or alternate between the groups of beats..
@@calebatkins9496 yea, sorry for late reply, i got back from tour a few weeks ago. it was by far the best summer of my life and would easily recommend it to anyone who wants to march :)
My school actually does do an all for 1 competition called the march off where the directors yell out different marching techniques we have to do, and I’ve won it twice now
seeing videos like this makes me mad that I use a school horn where the last dipshit put it down on the bell to crease it, didn't use gloves and never polished it.
Thank you for this video! I know i'm a bit late to the party seeing when it was posted but, still. I'm auditioning to join the Blue Knights this year and I've been freaking out about how I was going to afford it if I got a contract. This helped a lot!
apologies for the late reply but i was slammed with post tour depression. adding the fact that i had to quarantine for one week after that made it worse even tho i wasnt sick after arriving in hkg the day after the last show
Especially doing dci going into college, it’s the fact that you used to be able to be surrounded by these people that love you everyday, and now you go home and all of your friends are moving out for college and you are still waiting to find new friends that you just know will never be as close to you as your corps friends
Don't drink water. Drink electrolytes. Propel dry packets-cheap. Banana Bags, expensive, from a pharmacist. Recommended to POTS patients. Contains a formulation very similar to the formulation WHO uses for dehydration.
Just went to Drums Along the Rockies last night. So, let me make sure I understand this…all the members have to pay their own way for the summer? That is crazy. I was hoping the performers were paid. They should be paying you for all the time and talent you all give. I would compare the level of performance and professionalism I experienced to a professional athlete. Corps need to pay these talented people for their time, energy and professional skills.
Be reasonable. The title “musician” is thrown around a LOT and misused by too many people…posers who like to fancy themselves as musicians in their own heads but don’t actually have the bonafides to back it up. The word needs to be given a little more gravitas and respect than it gets. Think about it. I can make several pretty good dishes in the kitchen, but that doesn’t make me a “chef.” That’s a title that must be earned. I can create some very good blueprints of rooms and drawings of houses, but that doesn’t make me an architect. That must be earned to be legit. At what point WOULD you draw the line? Passion alone doesn’t give legitimacy or earn one the title of “musician.” There has to be some criteria in order for the word to have any meaning. True, some people are gifted with natural talent and have the power to move an audience with their singing voice, for example. But those people are rare, and even naturally gifted singers have usually studied music and taken lessons to improve their talent. But if we all went around calling ourselves musicians because we like music- or because we can drag music loops around with a mouse in a computer- the word musician would become a meaningless joke. Titles have purpose. They relay a degree of dedication and commitment to something. One can’t merely call themselves a pilot or a doctor because they have a passion for flight simulator games and medical videos. You gotta put some meat on the bones and have level of seriousness- pay your dues to some extent. Have something that says, I have earned being called a real musician. I goof around with music. I’ve released two albums, as a matter of fact… but I can’t play anything. I don’t know theory. Don’t know the names of chords. I have some talent putting together melodies and sounds using sophisticated software- but I would NEVER, EVER be so conceited or presumptuous as to call myself a musician. I haven’t earned it. So I would back up a bit and give the word a bit more respect and place it within a reasonable context. There are too many self-described wannabe “musicians” in name only.
i got contracted into impulse dbc and somehting id absolutely recommend is pepper spray/gel in case you have to defend yourself and others (ask staff first)
I’m marching my first year with Guardians this summer, and as an 8th grader it’s scary but the vets have been a lot of help and even some of the other rookies have been too!
Hey David Your videos are great and you are a big help to lots of DCI rookies like myself. You make it possible for people to understand what dci is really like and that they can acheive it.
