Thank you for this tutorial. Fantastic introduction to this system. Setting up for home use. Made my transition from "regular" routers very simple.

I have the Mini as well and use it for my photography/videography work and travel. It is absolutely awesome! I use it both powered via my trucks built-in inverter when I need to be mobile and use it connected to a solar battery pack when I am offgrid. It Is really nice to be able to make a WiFi based phone call when cell service is non-existent! Speeds are also great, I have seen a max of 180mbps download and 29mbps upload in ideal conditions with 150mbps download and 20mbps upload on average. I would recommend getting a tripod adapter so it can be placed onto a photo tripod which will help with connection and setup.

Can I power it with 220v
@thetechguy600
@thetechguy600 2 дня назад
I would look into that more. I would think you could if you downgraded the voltage since the Mini supports an input voltage of 12 to 48 volts.

I know that you want to help people and also make a video to attract more customers but this is how you kill the business. Customers with little to no experience that are willing to copy your setup without knowing what they are actually doing sometimes are not only not hiring an expert but also overpay the equipment because the tutorial is all about the most expensive SOHO brand. Correct me if I am wrong but you dont just pay an expert to pic the correct equipment for your needs but also when something goes wrong and you dont know what to do to fix it you can call the expert who installed it and ask him to do it or blame him for not doing it right.

It works great for me. I use it both on the roof of my truck as well as just sitting it on the dash and both locations work great when stationary and in motion driving down the road.

Just wish the mini dish was a tad cheaper, at $599 it is insane to ask that much when the bigger, more powerful dish with separate router is $299. Hell if the mini was $399 I'd buy it in a heartbeat! Hope they lower the cost of it in the USA soon though

To be honest, running the Unifi Controller on any device is the same risk if you don't do a backup. If you setup Unifi OS on a cloud key or cloud gateway, and forget to setup backup, the database can corrupt and hose the whole configuration. The main advantage of a cloud gateway or cloud key is to have a device that is already configured to run the unifi apps instead of setting it up yourself on a separate device. I like the idea of the Software Defined networking that UI has done. It makes it really easy to configure, but it does come with its risks as software can sometimes cause issues. I think for prosumer, some home users, small and medium business, UI have got what it takes. I went all in on UniFi once the new gateways were released ( I already have Cloud Key Gen 2 ) and grabbing a Gateway Max was just a no brainer for my situation. I looked at USG's earlier, but they were n=just not quite up to the task, a bit underpowered. The new gateways definitely give a lot of options. The cloud gateways and UDM's really do give a lot of options for people just starting with UI now. I think that what Unifi devices you get will depend on budget and purpose. A UniFi Express and a switch Ultra or 8 port PoE Lite will be more economical for a basic install than a UDM PRo, not to mention the UDM Pro has fans so noise will be a consideration. As far as future proofing AP's, I would not worry about that as much as some people do. Majority of clients, even in business deployments, are not using WiFi 7 and the cost difference is still significant enough to make the U6's a quite viable option. In one or two years time, WiFi 7 will be outdated so we are not really future proofing by going to more expensive AP's that clients are not really taking advantage of. WiFi, Computers and the like are one thing you really can not future proof on as whatever you get now will not be future proof in reality. Overall this is a great tuturial, but I would not say a lot of this is actually beginner. A lot of information and recommended equipment is aimed at business or at minimum intermediate users. Beginners guide should be for someone who has never done Unifi before and knows little about networking.

*****Update******** Hey viewers... for any others wondering, here are a couple of notes: 1)For the PASSWORD enter (without quotation marks): "m" 2)The menus are quite a bit different as I currently view them in Sept. 2024... So we'll have to figure out from what we see. Though (as I make notes while following along) This a pretty awesome starter guide) 3)Traffic Section is NOW "Routing" 4)He screwed up something by not adjusting his "IDS"/"IPS" rules then doesn't show us how it works... as though we would be here if we already knew any of this $#!*... I'm renounce the "Awesome Starter Guide" comment from my 2nd note, and urge you to STAY AWAY from this guide... Even the routing section was lazy. No attempt at showing how to handle profiles or specific devices... He treated it like mayonnaise and slathered it on everything. *****Previous****** Ok, I'm finally setting up my network, attempting to follow along, and some things are difficult to follow... Sometimes you are stating things and showing your face, where the screen would be FAR more useful... Other things like the password... is it "M" or "N", for things like this usage of phonetic alphabet is imminently useful (Mike, November, etc.) Thank you again for the video. Now i'm off to try to find instructions so I don't cause problems by entering the wrong password (who knows what Mullvad may do as a response)

Great video! I'm in FL, West Coast, above Tampa. We have Spectrum. Had issues with service decided to replace our surfboard (same one you had) with the UCI so Spectrum couldn't say it's our equipment any longer. Easy upgrade, easy adoption, and Spectrum got it up and working quick. Even got a speed boost somehow. The old surfboard was getting us 290-350 download the UCI is 450-459 down. Not bad.

I was wondering, per your example setup. you mentioned that you dont want certain devices talking to the rest of the network so you would put them on the IoT network. so for a home network, if you have such things as alexas and appliances that can be controlled by your smart phone. how would you set that up? some of the appliances require your phone to be connected to the same network, but i would think you would want your phone to be connected to the "staff" network. sorry i may be over thinking this, but i am still learning.

I was recommended UniFi products but I noticed there's no customer support or sales support on their website. I submitted their online form requesting for a system for my apartment building but heard nothing back. Even though these look interesting I'd rather go with a more well-known brand Cisco or tp-link where I was able to call them and have technical support immediately on the phone without some subscription cost
