The legacy of the Landsknechte still lives on in the German Army today. The enlisted soldiers are commonly referred to as "Landser," a reference to their original armament with lances. The senior non-commissioned officers are known as "Feldwebel," who, among the Landsknechte, were responsible for organizing the ranks of the "Landser." The company sergeant major is still called the "Spieß," which means spear. With this spear, cowardly or lazy "Landser" were driven forward into battle towards the enemy.
