The use of that song , Night and Day, in this scene was both intense and romantic... Powerful and yet sad. A love that cannot be completely given into because they had an affair. The love was real but still wrong and forbidden.
I didn't see this picture till I was 18. The double cigarette-lighting trick floored me - a lot of the romance in this floored me. I'm an old boy now and the message of denying self happiness for a greater good still floors me.
The dialogue is so stellar. Th surface conversation, the real conversation happening below, it’s just a wonderful scene that says so much so efficiently. Writing like this doesn’t happen anymore.
I have forever been the most ardent admirer of Bette Davis! She is the only actress in film history that speaks and says it profoundly with her beautiful eyes. Her eyes always say what words are incapable of expressing.
This lady Bette Davis showed me that it's possible for an actor to bring out every emotion in a movie to the audience. And this movie runs the gamut of emotions. What a talent she has, what an ability, to carry the screen even with actors like Bogart, Marilyn Monroe. She stands out in a room full of the best of the best. If you watch Dark Victory and don't ball your eyes out, you are not human. And Now Voyager what a story, incredible, emotional twist and turns that make movies of today seem mediocre, childish, and down right unwatchable. I'll take movies of the 30's 40's and 50's over anything that has come out in the last 30 years..
Such beautiful people in elegant suits and gowns. Gorgeous architecture. And Tchaikovsky’s symphony carrying on from the concert hall to become part of the background music as she sits awaiting him. I love this film!
@David Dedick thank you found it on here.. it was brilliant for mr. Steiner to use that and in a similar way it was brilliant for Bill Conte to use Clair de Lune in The Right Stuff movie sequence..
What a scene, actors and music score! My favourite romantic film with the wonderful Bette Davis. Yes, she should have won an Oscar for this. She was quiet and understated, yet some people think she always played bad women. This film proves she didn’t and there are others. Thank you for this.
Definitely should have had the Oscar for this. No disrespect to Ms Greer Garson for her winning turn in Mrs Miniver, but Bette's was the better performance.
She developed a very interesting walk. It's like she's on a catwalk. She struts but very refined. In The Letter, when she's walking to the car that's taking her to the Chinese quarter, it's very dramatic. Bette knew how to upstage everyone but it was all interesting.
Now Voyager is epic Bette Davis-ness. Thank you for posting the song within the scene! I was wracking my brain trying to remember which movie I remember the song from 😊
She didn't even go upstairs to check in on Blanche to see how she was doing on her wheelchair 😲 maybe she just doesn't want Blanche to know that she's having a visitor because then Blanche will start making noises upstairs. 🙄 Although at the end of this clip it sounded like Blanche was ringing for her from upstairs, and she got up quickly but with an attitude 💄😁
She's got Betty Davis eyes! Such a fascinating old-school lighting technique. A bit over the top, but pretty cool. Bathe the skin in soft light and then hit the eyes with a couple of bright spots to garner reflections that make them twinkle. Notice how the lead male gets the same treatment once it's clear he also has a spark for her. I imagine it must have been a bit difficult to act in those conditions.
Entre todas as atrizes citadas e ainda muito mais outras....... Olivia De Havilland Katherine Hapburn Vivien Leigh Grace Kelly Ava Gardner Lilian Gish Elizabeth Taylor Meryl Streep Bárbara Stanwick Claudette Colbert Rita Hayworth Marlene Dietrich Greta Garbo Miriam Hopkins Anne Bancroft Joan Fontaine Para mim, Bette Davis e a rainha 👑 do cinema.
An interesting tidbit. Bette Davis originally petitioned against the music score to this film. Her reasoning was, it would overshadow her roll. After the film's release, and it's great success, she changed her mind.
