This is terrific and soooooo overdue . Finally a really candid look at one aspect of The South East Asian experience and recognising the powerful impact of cultural identity . Sadly racism still marrs our society but this is a strong step to bridge cultural differences and educate while elevating marginalised voices . Could we have another on Muslim heritage and Vietnamese Thai Indonesia The Philippines the colonial reach throughout South East Asia is far reaching .
Sapna is talking about sakoni’s in Wembley… such a throw back!!! Went recently it has changed but was so nostalgic… that paneer and those garlic mushrooms yum!! Great episode!
This feels super forced and performative to randomly do a podcast putting together the only few South Asian members of Sheer Luxe right after the AI controversy, feels inauthentic, there's more organic ways to go about representation than this
Whilst I agree with the sentiment of this comment, it’s difficult isn’t it because there’s been critique that SL/Luxegen isn’t diverse enough, but then when they platform their brown and black staff it feels performative. The Reem thing was an awkward misstep but otherwise it seems they are listening to feedback on making their output slightly less posh white girl focused
I really enjoyed this! Would be good to have a more varity of South Asians from other countries. As it's not only Indians. Pakistanis, Bangladeshis, Sri Lankans, and Afghans. But I love the concept.
this is the most unbelievable podcast ever. no words. so so happy you have actually touched on indian culture and varied versions of it. so many interesting points you spoke about . they always talk about other cultures but i hardly hear about indians and thank you for talking about this on sheerluxe . proud of you all. one thing : there is an identity crisis for indians in the uk who are not punjabi or gurathi and i think it’s important to talk about that one day. xx
Love the south asian panel! I did Kumon, even as a millenial lol! Got excited as an indian muslim to feel represented but would have been fab to include non-indian south asians too. It may as well have been called growing up Indian.
This is such a wonderful conversation, thank you. I work in suicide prevention and am a suicide prevention trainer and just want to add that people have a lot of fear around asking someone if they are considering suicide. If you are going to start a conversation with someone, it’s really important to ask directly if they are thinking about taking their own life, by asking directly you show that you are able to talk to them, listen and be non-judgemental. Don’t tip toe around the topic, the more openly we can talk about suicide the better. There is no evidence that asking someone will put the idea in their head unless they are already thinking about it. 1 in 5 people will have thoughts of suicide in their lifetime, it’s ok to talk about it, talking is the first step to getting help ❤
Sadly we don’t have that much of an independent shopping scene up here (compared to other cities like Bath or London) but, as you’ve all experienced, the food culture is a beast in Mcr! Really good to see more content outside of the South for us northern-eng followers.
I loved the wee denim bag that Sapna showed from her handbag on the train. May I ask where she got this from and is it available to buy? Thank you. Love that you loved the concert so much ❤
