As a child, I attended the old church which stood on this site, a beautiful galleried building containing a grand and imposing pipe organ. I watched the fierce fire that consumed it in the early hours of that January morning 1954 from our house opposite. I saw the laying of the Foundation Stone for the new church, then the building taking shape and have a photo of the day the consecration service took place. When the new church was opened my mother became its weekly paid cleaner. I would often attend with her the highlight being when she would have a break from cleaning to give us a tune on the piano. Mothers' cleaning gave my brothers and me a Merry Christmas as she asked to be paid annually each December. I loved the old church building as I do this one as an example of 1950's architecture. Up until COVID, this was the venue for the best Carol Service in these parts. Let's hope for another this and coming years.
Hi Leslie - it is good to hear your memories of the church at Long Clawson. Do you still live locally? Services have started again and they would welcome you if you went along.
