I think the stability/traction control cuts in, i think the ECU in sport mode enables greater torque. The 1.8 engine has a lot of low down torque. It does this in Drive mode too but is not as extreme

Sure. According to a witness, the driver rear-ended another car whilst driving 160km/h. As you can see, it was storming with heavy rainfall causing bad vision and a longer braking distance. It happend in the Netherlands.
