Just read the book last month and enjoyed it. There aren't many books depicting the story of the 45th out there. The Rock of Anzio is out of print and have nowhere to find it. I didn't care for the Netflix series, the dialogue was a bit cheesey. My grandfather was in the 45th from Oran to Nuremberg, not as infantry but a truck driver in the Signal Corps. Never met the guy since he died in the '60s but am always fascinated whenever media about the thunderbird division comes out. Would be interested to know if DiCaprio's character in Shutter Island was inspired by Sparks as they show a similar scene with the train and the girl staring at him. Anyone who knows of any other sources for 45th info out there would be much appreciated.
My father served in the Pacific, WW2 Army/Airforce and returned home safely. Unfortunately he passed away a day before his 87th birthday. He didn't ike discussing the War but did mention his buddy Earl who the enemy bombed. 😢

Well done, Friend. I especially enjoyed your retelling of CN's engagement with the porter on the train. A measured response. And yes, California used to be a Paradise, with Yerba Buena in the air. Now it's bums and human dung on the streets and Marxists in Sacramento. Aaaaaahhhhhhhh.............Progress!
I will be buying several copies of Conduct Under Fire. My father was one of the American soldiers captured and survived the Baton Death March. He never really talked much about his experience as a POW of three and half years. I am very grateful to you Mr Glusman for your hard work and diligence in publishing this magnificent untold story. Thank you so much. My father's name was Guy Edwin Jones. Gary Jones
My Father Served on CV-3; USS Saratoga from 1932 thru 1936 ! Upon the Start of the War (2) My father went to local navy reserve center, to re-enlist BUT the the enlistment officer would not improve his rank that he was discharged with in 1936, even with his further education & skill set. therefore, he wen to the US merchant marine academy ! & became an officer, served in the battle of the atlantic & thru the duration of the War ! He his passed away some years past, but he cherished his time in the merchant marines, BUT was was disappointed with lack of appreciation of his service & others !
Very humbling to listen to you Sir,I live about 15minutes away from where you were stationed at Thorpe Abbots, and the place is a wonderful memorial you all who served and sacrificed there.God bless you.🇺🇲🇬🇧
Thanks for this, just caught wind of it (your book) from someone trying to appeal to the city government of “Climbache” France to have a monument erected for my “Great Uncle” Charlie. (Major Charles Thomas). My mom accepted the Medal of Honor for him in 1997 from then Pres. Clinton.
Remember if someone says “humans would never do that again” oh yes they would the humans of today are no less capable of such atrocities than the humans of years ago.The Nazi’s weren’t the first to have internment camps and they weren’t the last
Great presentation. Thank you. Why aren’t historians more critical of King? And his premature invasion of Guadalcanal. And his Lst’s going to Tarawa, etc, instead of Normandy. What a jerk. How many lives could have been saved at Normandy with a few more tanks?
Raymond Spruance was cheated out of his fifth star by a US Senator who was a butt boy of Halsey and never wanted Spruance mentioned in the same breath. I think it was Lodge but cannot remember. Between Leyte Gulf and the typhoons, Halsey should have been retired.
You sir are conveying a false impression about the battle of Midway. The last Japanese carrier, the Hiryu, was attacked by dive bombers from Enterprise and Yorktown at 1705 hrs and rendered a burning hulk at that time. Fletcher transferred tactical command to Spruance at 1811 hrs. Spruance's major contribution to the battle was his decision to refuse a night battle with the Japanese fleet. After the battle, only Fletcher was promoted, receiving his third star, at the insistence of Admiral Nimitz. It was Fletcher who was the victor of the battle of Midway and, as you indicated by his ( Spruance's) comment to Elliot Morrison, Spruance knew it. As you know, Fletcher went on to win the Battle of the Eastern Solomons. Spruance went on to command the fleet in 1944, but it was a vastly different fleet. All that being said, it seems to me that Fletcher and Spruance ware cut from the same cloth: Willing to take only calculated risks and willing to follow orders from Admiral Nimitz.
Such an excellent Presentation by Rear Admiral Bitoff! He clearly expounded on Admiral Spruance's Military history, and role during WW2. Admiral Spruance truly was an unsung Hero of the Pacific Theatre! It is my belief that Admirals Nimitz and Spruance were two of the greatest US Military Commanders of all time!
Interesting story. I have Burkey relatives where his ancestors were from, and information about the family, some were Amish, but no Amish people live there now.
From Annapolis..I read your book-it was wonderful. I wanted to meet and be in the presence of such heroic men. Thank you. (I also read the “Ritchie Boys”.❤️🙏❤️
I appreciate your excellent presentation. There's at least 10 things discussed that aren't common knowledge about America's greatest Admiral. As a veteran, I have a history Nerd gene. I'd love to interview you, or better yet, go fishing in my backyard and just listen.
I just buy your Book Sir, and i am thrilled and looking forward to read it !!!! All my respect for you and your lost friends that gave their lives in WW2.
