This is kind of a bad take. I mean, to be fair, the word, "louder," kind of misrepresents what this phrase means. What people do is a lot more representative of who they are than just what they say. I mean, by definition, saying something... *is* an action, but the act of you saying it means more than the words themselves. For instance, the words, "I love you," mean far more when they come from someome who has demonstrated their support for you, their loyalty, their love, than they do when someone says, "I love you," to insist feelings that they rarely, if ever, demonstrate. Perhaps a compromise is that words do have a tendency to be louder to some people in certain situations. We often believe people's words to the extent where we don't notice their actions and how they're entirely contradictory. That's usually somewhat unsustainable though, as eventually the person's actions come to represent who they are in people's minds more than their words.

My take is different. If the person no longer brings something positive to my life, I let them go. Whoever they are. What people need to say, which is the same thing, is pay attention to your relationship, always. Most people do not WANT to see what is happening in their life. The signs are always there. But, don’t be angry. Serves you no purpose. Yes, it will take a while to recover and there is nothing you can do about what happened. I try to find what was positive during the time I spent with that person. What did you learn and finally, be happy you are no longer living in a lie.

BS. Talk about perpetuating victim mentality. That's the one of the most toxic and really dangerous things you can do for yourself. My parents did much worse than these examples and I've learned they are human and forgiveness is better.

WOW! Every word struck home for me today as fiancé left three months ago and I am only now feeling traumatized at what I thought was a good relationship. There were significant Red Flags. So glad I dodged a bullet and am looking inward as to why I felt that I needed to try to hold onto that pig…

They choose “themselves “ because the indictment of what’s in the mirror is too much! Human psychology is fascinating. It’s only because they had shit parents are they shit parents. If they only got that they were traumatized then the need to help their own offspring would be a no-brainer!

im 22 right now. When i had just turned 19 i packed up all of my things when i was home alone and left without another word because i brought up my issues with my parents and i was always blamed or dismissed. I also brought up the iasues with another family member (shes very old school) and she told me i needed to suck it up or move out. I had moved out less than a week later. I was in a very abusive and toxic relationship while they were cut off and i feared for my life every day and i still felt living in that was better than how i was treated at home. I had a baby and ended up reconnecting with my parents (and leaving my ex/sons dad) and setting down a very firm boundary that things needed to be different and if they became how they were before id leave. I knew my parents wouldn't admit they were wrong about my childhood but i had to make a decision when it came to our relationship. I knew that i wanted my son to have a relationship with his grandparents and them have a relationship with him. I made peace with knowing i wouldnt get an apology but with that, theyve also changed their actions when it comes to how they treat me. They say some people are terrible parents but amazing grandparents and thats how i like to think about the situation with them.

And the gaslighting you get from a parent who wont take accountability and responsibility for their shortcomings/pain/trauma put on their children. It's absolutely horrible. It's confusing and messy and leaves the child feeling even more isolated, wondering why they still can't get their parent to just *listen*. My heart is with all my brothers and sisters who have strained/broken relationships with their parents. At least we have each other.

I'm not sure if i can blame my father anymore because judging by how he's acting, i'm starting to consider if he's genuenly just interlectually disabled and thus cannot understand what he did wrong, even after all the times i've sat him down and tried to explain it to him

I’m a 32 years old female. I severed my relationship with my dad. Now my marriage is going under and I’m scared to death. My dad did do things that were worthy of me leaving things that you don’t ever even speak allowed ever! I have been with my husband since I was 18 and I’m terrified of going back out into the world alone.

Hello Sven, it’s Shaun, I just had to find one of your recent videos and leave a comment. I just saw you and your lovely lady at Ace Hardware in little ol Butte, MT. What I nice surprise it was to meet one of my favorite RU-vidrs from so far away in the states. I love your work and appreciate all you do in your profession. I hope you both enjoy the rest of your vacation and catch some big fish on the River. Thanks for the photo, that was awesome!

I haven't let go. I know life has to go on but I'm stuck in the sadness. His life has gone on, much as if I never mattered. But to me he mattered in a huge way and I find myself with no wind in my sails grieving the hole that he left. I journal and self care and hang out with friends, but the hole still aches.

I told off my mom the other day, probably going no contact after that. I wouldn't even care, except my dad's birthday is today and she's using it as an excuse to guilt trip me into seeing her. I don't want to have to choose between going NC with my mom and never seeing my dad again but I may have to. It sucks.
