m4/3 with a f1.8 prime gives plenty of shallow DOF and low light capability, especially with today's AI noise reduction software. The extra cost and bulk of full frame for negligible IQ benefit is not worth it
This is a great portrait lens, for the money it,s superb. Hired the Pro lens for a shoot in a poorly lit dancehall. Had to use the little FM flash that comes with the EM1 Mk2, the results were great, converted to B/W in LR gave me the 70,s look I was after. (It was a northern soul night).
I had what I call the kit lens, the 14 to 42mm, until the internal ribbon cable snapped, it,s a common fault apparently. Having watched all the glowing reviews for the 12 to 40mm I opted for a mint used one. The reviews were justified, a superb optic. Kept a 20mm and 45 mm primes for low light, that,s all I need, Pen camera for backup to EM1 Mk2, all lightweight and it matter,s at 69!
Thank you very much for watching and for your excellent comment. You are never sure about reviews because you rarely watch a bad one, however this lens deserves the attention it gets - nice set of gear too, cheers 👍
I have the pro dual lens kit and the dual kit lens. They are good lens at F4/F5.6. I use tele to pick out details They are my travel/holiday kit along with the 9-18mm f4-5.6 and Lumix Leica 25mm f1.4. I use them with M10 mk 1+grip and the 3 batteries...
Take aways: - nowadays smartphone's night mode technology performs excellently, especially combined with a tripod, thanks to 30 pics stacking - the results of this video are not really reliable since no timer was used on neither of the devices. I saw the devices moving when the shutter was pressed. If a timer had been used, either the dslr would have outperformed the smartphone, or the smartphone would have outperformed the dslr even more. We will never know. What a pity.
Fully ageee with the benefits of MFT vs APSC and FF... And for video, I have chosen Pana G9II. Just one remark : although Olympus and Panasonic lenses are compatible with either bodies, when stabilisation is at stake, they are not compatible.
Hello Nice images from the D3000. I have one and it works very well. The Kitlens 18-55mm is good enough in most cases. Use it for landscape and portrait. Greetings from lower Bavaria.
I still don't get it. They're no smaller than an A6400 for example and only 60 g lighter. Poor depth of field, poor low light, not at all cheaper. I love Olympus and had a bunch of OM1-4s. Took them all over the world. I think APS-C is the sweet spot. I can't understand why Olympus could not have produced an APS-C camera just as small. After all, an APS-C sensor is smaller than 35 mm film frame. Yes, the lenses woukd be slightly larger but hardly an issue. I had a GH-4 for about 12 months and it was a frustrating experience.
I discovered the macro capability of this lens in 2016 when I bought my first Olympus digital camera. I used Olympus since the early seventies, and I have never found another camera to match them. I have used the 12 - 40 for landscape, wedding, portrait, architecture, macro and product photography, and it has never failed.
Thank you very much for watching and for your excellent comment. I have been amazed how good this lens is not only its quality but also the versatility with opening pro features and this close to macro shooting. Thanks again 👍
Full Frame isn't better in low light. Bokeh is a failure to resolve the details in the image. If shallow depth of field is what you crave, go medium format.
Thanks for watching and for your question. Although one battery should be OK, it isn't a new camera and the battery has probably degraded, and 2nd would be helpful 👍
I think the focal length translating to the natural FOV of the human eye works out to be the measurement across the diagonal of the sensor. So in full frame terms it translates to 42mm if I recall correctly. Nifty fifty is a slight telephoto.
Thanks for sharing. I agree with your choices, and fully endorse your recommendation to spend time using your camera, rather than considering what else to buy. 😎
Nice review. I managed to get a D3300 with lens for $200 instead, which is also a bit smaller and lighter, although not having that amazing articulating screen certainly stings :)
I have an older iPhone and insta will no longer update my app. Fair enough. But insta will also not allow me to change this setting on a web browser in my brand new MacBook Pro. Frustrating that this platform is hobbled on computers.
Thanks a lot for watching and for your comment. Maybe I wasn't being generous enough calling it a kit lens, and I wasn't trying to be controversial. Cheers 👍
The 12-40 2.8 Pro is not a kit lens, in fact when I bought my original EM-10 I declined the two kit lenses and opted to get the 12-40 at an additional cost instead. Why do you choose to mislead people?
Thanks very much for watching and for your comment. I have just mentioned how I see it, and when I have looked to buy my em1 that case was being offered as part of a kit 👍
@@MyPhotoJourney Nonsense. It may have been offered as a package with the camera, but it has never been of a quality that would be described in common parlance as a kit lens.
This may be sold in some kits with the pro-level bodies, but suggesting it's a Kit Lens is wrong as, frankly, there's nothing to upgrade to beyond this. This is a pro-level lens with a constant F2.8 throughout. The kit lenses in the Zuiko range are the plastic 14-42mm and 40-150mm commonly sold with the EM10 and Pen ranges. These too are exceptional products for their size and cost.
thanks for making this video .. i have been using this lens with my om-5 & procapture for birds in flight in my garden because it's a small space. with 2.8 i can shoot early & late & (i'm in scotland) when the sky is constant 18% grey😂, tho f3-4.5 gives a wee bit more dof. yes BIF with a wide angle! 18-24mm at 70-100cm from the perch is my sweet spot to get pin sharp images..so MACRO-BIF , this lens does it all, it's a keeper
Thanks a lot indeed for watching and for your comment, and I can imagine the great shots you must be getting with your set-up and even in the grey lands of the north - cheers 👍👍
Great video, I have been in and out of Olympus a couple times. I have the urge to to get back in, but don’t want to spend the price o the OM1. Well done
Thanks very much for watching, and I can imagine and cost of moving camera systems is a bit much, and it's hard enough affording the gear in the first place. Thanks again. 👍👍
You’ve just convinced me that I need to use my 12-40mm to get some macro shots. TY And I like your use of ‘superpower’ to call out the near-macro capability of this lens. And I am hoping that this approach to macro will help me get ‘into macro’ because I always find it very daunting and challenging to execute a good macro shot. Perhaps this near-macro lens will be more accessible. TY for your insight. ❤
Thank you. Great lens! Please would you allow your photos and camera settings to appear on the screen for a bit longer. 1 second is not enough time to read a detailed caption.
Have you considered making your videos at 24p? The reason I ask is that I watch on my TV with a Roku. I like to watch at fast speed and when I do your video drops down to 360p quality 😢. So I usually end up not watching. I notice that 24p video plays just fine at faster speeds. Thanks.
Hi i wanna ask camera recommendation for beginner :D i already have some option like 650d, a6000, m6. If i buy the 650d maybe i'll grab other lens too but if i buy the a6k/m6 i'll go with the kit. Which one r the best deal in your opinion? Thanks :)
It's amazing. Was using it for stills and video for a pro shoot at the O2 Indigo on Friday. I doubled it up with the 17mm F1.8. The manual clutch is really useful. I haven't used it as a macro but am going to try it now so pausing the video......... I'm back, its bloody brilliant at macro, just shot a cactus flower, F2,8 ISO 200 shutter 1/800
The Olympus 12-40mm f2.8 is a pro lens. Its so affordable now on the used market I guess you can call it a kit lens. The first version of the Panasonic 12-35mm f2.8 is also affordable now. But I understand calling it a kit lens when you buy it with a camera at the same time.
You people ???????? Check this Iphone 12 v canon 550D 2010 camera with 50mm lense there is a big difference do it guy no iphone can beat real camera at all try it . I'm in zimbabwe then Iphone 14 vs 550D camera is best best best not better but best try it guys
