I started collecting knives in April of 2021 with a Camillus and the Joe Pardue Utilitac 1a by Ontario Knife company. Today, I am still budget focused looking for that "hidden nugget". Although, I also purchase knives when I feel the value exceeds the prices.
Follow me on my knife collecting experiences.
I plan on doing short videos for knife and gear reviews. Hopefully progress in to some "knife science" with sharpening and cut tests. Also would like to break into firearms, hiking, knife modification and maybe dog training.
Once I got a full sized Stockman, no other made me smile. I love the Rough Ryder Carbon Steel Classic Large Stockman. I now have 4 of them, cause......reasons.
Hey Doug, Thanks for the comment. You never know........... I hope they do like Case knives and rarely repeat families. But, even Case does very similar covers after 10 - 15 years have gone by. Heck, I just got a canoe in Demin Bone that I swear could pass for Pocket worn Mediterranean blue.
You gotta pinch the main blade, instead of using a nail nick. I prefer heavier pulls on non locking knives, and I’ve returned a few rough Ryders with weak pulls. But I have this pattern in their carbon steel cinnamon stag bone series, and it is a lot easier just pinching that main blade and pulling it out. The smaller pen blade….theres no trick, like you said, that bow in the spring adds a lot of tension and the angle it’s at is weird. I stilll like carrying mine, took awhile to get it broke in a bit. Thanks for sharing
Thanks for sharing this tip Joel. I have learned a bit about this since I shot this video and I agree. I have also, though, been cut by getting too much skin ahead of the edge.
Hi Rusty, I hope you are well. I am missing your Daily Video posts. If you remember I bought this R.R Pocket Cleaver knife. I was a tad disappointed with it when it arrived, but after profiling and resharpening the blade to hair Popping sharp, I walked out to the kitchen, knife in hand looking for a piece of paper to cut. My Twin Daughters were in the Kitchen prepping for Dinner, They handed me an onion and asked me to cut it up for them. Lucky I had my freshly sharpened R.R Pocket Cleaver in hand. It did fantastic cutting up onions I then used it to dice some Tomato's. The Pocket cleaver made quick and easy work of that tomato. The whole time I kept saying " WOW! this knife is doing really well. I am now happy I got this knife. Most likely there are much better Prep knives out there but the Pocket Cleaver does a good job on Vegies, and will make for a good camping prep knife. Have a sharp day.
Hey flitdek, thanks for sharing your experiences with this knife. It is nice to have a folding knife that does well in the kitchen, especially if you enjoy camping too. 😉😉
One of my everyday carry pocket knives is the Caliber Mid-lock single blades in the Sagebrush bone. The fit and finish on this knife is very good for an everyday knife. At $12.00 this knife is an excellent value, however, it is not a Case Copperlock. But then again, it cuts every time I need it to,
I bought Oakley sunglasses when I was in high school. $60 a pop. I sat on my first pair after I owned them a couple months. $60 gone, down the drain. After buying and losing a second pair the same year, I switched to Wal-mart sunglasses. Today, I wear safety glasses with UV block that you can buy by the dozen for around $7 each. Get a few friends in on it and we are set for a couple years. My point? Sometimes it's best to buy the product that will get the job done despite and ignore the name on the label.
Wow, that thing is gorgeous... Rough Rider always surprises me with how nice they look for the price, and the steel they use, while not the best, is usually easy to sharpen... I have a carbon steel knife of theirs on order right now and have never tried one of their none SS knives before, so I am looking forward to trying it out!
Thanks brother. It's a classic for sure. I grabbed another knife I have been hunting for 2 years the other day. Video will be out in the fall. If you like this one, you'll like the other one.
They had to of been made by children.... Very disappointment with my Sea Dragon Folding Hunter also. Reached out to Case and they dump you back onto Smokey Mountain. Not sure how Smokey could resolve, being an out of stock exclusive... My polish was good, but the contouring of the bolsters was not even close to the promo photos. Slab sided without a hint of contouring like yours. Never again, hurts Smokey's reputation also since they accept the second rate quality. There kids need lessons from Rough Ryder.....
Hi Rusty I was looking for and hoping you have done a Review of the Rough Ryder Denim Micarta work knife R.R. 2181. Do you own this knife? If so, would you consider doing a review of it? Thank you sir for your consideration.
@@rustyminer Hi Rusty I hope you Enjoy your Vacation. The Rough Ryder Denim Micarta Work Knife R.R.2181 is a sway back with a Wharncliffe blade Denim Micarta Handel's Black and blue layered look with Lanyard hole. Anyway Sorry to nose in on your Vacation. Have a sharp day.
@@flitdek No worries brother. Like I said, I am checking in from time to time and I always like to hear what people are buying, especially when it comes to Rough Ryder
Definitely the Cinnamon Stag is the Moose to get. I Also really Love my Improved Muskrat, and I am grateful to you in helping me to make the decision to buy the R.R. Improved Muskrat, Now I just need to order a second one as a Backup. Man Rough Ryder really needs to put you on the Payroll as Top Salesman. Have a great day Rusty.
Hey bud, Thanks for sharing your experiences. I am happy you are happy. I am "on vacation" but will be checking on my comments about once a week or so. Keep me post on your knife journey and tons of cool knives still getting filmed by the old miner
Hi rusty. I have found that Fiebings "British Tan" Leather dye to be exactly or almost exactly the same color brown as on the R.R. Cinnamon Stag Bone. I don't believe they burn the bone as burning would be very difficult to control and get consistency of color. I would love to watch a video on Rough Ryders Bone staining Process. That would be Awesome. Thanks Rusty for another great video, the Cinnamon Stag Moose is top of my list in purchasing the Moose Pattern. I am loving My Cinnamon Stag Bow Trapper and the Carbon steel make it choice.
For the longest time I have turned my nose up at the Spay blade. After acquiring a Sowbelly Trapper and Bow trapper's both sporting that Heavy bellied Spay blade my thoughts on the Spay Blade was changed. I love the Spay Blade. The Spay Blade on my Bow Trapper slices Tomato's better then any Chefs Knife. Now I am looking to get a Moose because it also has that Heavy Bellied Spay Blade. I only wish R.R would offer us Carbon Steel knives with more selection of Knife Handles, Like Bone. In my opinion series knives should come with a choice of 440 or Carbon Steel. I would buy one or tow of each. Ayah Who am I kidding I would buy two of each. Having a backup to my backup isn't necessary, But it sure feels good. Thank you Rusty. I will be looking for your other R.R. Moos knife videos. You are the man I turn to when faced with a Purchasing dilemma. Cheers!
My Rough Ryder Carbon Classic II's have be been built really well. If you like the pattern, might want to grab one. I am afraid they well not be for sale brand new someday, maybe someday soon
You are right about that, in more ways than one. I would love the GEC #23, especially with a beaver shield. Just real quick, I am taking a break from social media. I appreciate you sharing your thoughts and commenting. I will drop a few videos between now and October, but have plans for many videos this fall/winter/spring
Thanks for showing this, unfortunately I think they made a mistake with the blade shape and the multiple pulls. Looks so bad I thought they screwed up at the factory! This knife deserves a re do. Nice clip point would do wonders.
I agree. Sorry for the delay. I am taking a break from social media. I appreciate you sharing your thoughts and commenting. I will drop a few videos between now and October, but have plans for many videos this fall/winter/spring
The Rough Ryder feels really well built, but is a new model, the Case has been around since 1998, so has some history behind it. Real quick I am taking a break from social media. I appreciate you sharing your thoughts and commenting. I will drop a few videos between now and October, but have plans for many videos this fall/winter/spring
Do you mean the knife/blade? Place your thumb on someone known as the liner lock and push it over. The liner lock is on the inside of the frame/handle and has moved over to make contact with the end of the blade, (tang). The liner prevents the blade from moving. Hope this helps

Hi Rusty ! Happy Independence Day my friend ! Hope you & family are enjoying the holiday ! Especially missing Cinnamon Bear, hope she isn't traumatized by celebrants. Have a good one 💥🎆🎇🇺🇸
Tom, we had a good one. And on occasion there were some "celebrants" that were loud enough to give her a startle, she was able to manage the day as any other day. Thanks for checking. How was yours?
I like Jelly Jerry about like you like Elijah Isham. Jelly does some wicked designs that also function and despite being different, You can see his style in each of them.
I love Rough Ryder knives but I have to say the Micarta on the Classic carbon II reminds me of a car tire that is so bald that the cords are showing🙂 Just cant get past it. I would like SMKW to give us more Carbon steel Knife choices, and more carbon steel Knives with Bone Handles. Great Video, Thankyou.
I understand where you are coming from. I think because of the budget price on RR's they have to use budget micarta. Just a thought. I do agree, it is a bit slick looking and I like my micarta with a bit more texture.
I already told you how much I like this one in the long video. Beautiful looking bone covers. Bear & Son is a local company so went to see them do good.
I like Bear and Son. They are more affordable than Case and I have better luck with their covers. The action, however, is not as good. Maybe I just need to use them and they will get better.
@@rustyminer It's worth a try, at least. I have one knife I should have returned but thought it would work in. It has....about 90% of the time but.....
@@tombrown4683 Hey Tom, I actually sent this one in and they did a real nice job of making it better. The clip point is better and there is very little gapping. I am happy with B&S.
This ones a beast , love the blade shape, you were lucky to find two of these . When it comes to Twosun's you are the most knowledgeable collector that i know... 👍
I check up on Twosuns now and again. I have a relationship with an agent of the company and get some insider info now and then, but he still like to keep things to himself. *I think LTK has the most knowledge having met and worked with their designers and having designed his own knife for them. He knows the management there. The history of the company has just come from me following it for going on 5 years, now.
I'm not in to Modern knives, but I'm loving everything about this knife. The shape of the blade and handle just pulls me in. Really cool knife. Thanks Rusty.
Thanks Flit. This has such a cool blade shape. I have actually found a few knives with a similar blade shape and added most of them to the collection. This one, however, is a favorite.
Thanks for checking out the video and commenting J. I understand about supporting the American and gave some thought to your comment. My thoughts are, if you are an American and you NEED a knife, buy American, no matter the cost. Me and people like me, are just buying knives we don't need, but rather we want and yes, sending money overseas to fill our "fix" for the next new thing. Maybe we should pause and think on that next time we fill our carts? I won't write off Chinese knives, but I have switched to buying lots of USA made knives. A lot of new, but a lot of used ones too. I have found some Camillus, Schrade, Queen and and others from the past, that exceed today's knives in almost every way. So, with that said, someone, (company, manager or worker) needs to start acting like China is breathing down our necks when it comes to build quality, because they are.
The RR Reserve models probably have the bet fit of any production knives out there except GEC. The finishes tend to be generic and unrefined and they struggle with some design points, but really great knives for the money. Of course, made in China so they will never hold any value, but good users. Case really should step up their game a bit, though still my preferred choice.
Thanks Jason. My last video in the que until 10/01/24, but I expect I will drop some videos here and there until then. See you when I see you. Thanks for watching.
@@jasonbeecher509 I must have already started as I have a couple dozen comments yet to get too and I have tried to answer every comment in my 3 years of doing this.
Hi Rusty, Revisiting this Video. Since after taking your advice and getting the Sowbelly Trapper for EDC, I ordered it in Buckshot Bone. And then getting the Cinnamon stag Bow Trapper, I liked them both so much I decided to go ahead and get the Double bladed Bow trapper and again I am getting it in Buckshot Bone. I actually paused the video to placed the Order. By the way, I noticed you are missing the Buckshot Bone from your collection of Bow Trappers. Thanks again for helping me make up my mind, Your Videos are very helpful. I have now ordered 4 Knives because of your reviews.( Improved Muskrat,.. Cinnamon stag B.T,.. Sowbelly B.T,.. and now Double bladed B.T ) looking forward to your next review 🙂
right on brother. Anything I can do to motivate another knife brother to buy knives, I will do. Thank you for sharing your experiences. I think you will like them all. Keep posted on your favorite. I didn't like the Buckshot Bone that much when I shot this video. It still isn't my all time favorite cover, but I think it will look great in this pattern.
Thank you greatly and glad to have you. As luck would have it, I am taking a break from social media for a few months. Please continue to check out my videos and be sure to come back when I release Season 4, especially if you like cool knives. 👌🏻👌🏻 I subbed to your channel as well.
I would choose the Case. Both are good but the bent blade on the RR i am not a fan of that design, i like my blades staight. But the RR is way better value.. Great video buddy 😎👍
On a knife that size, I prefer a stronger pull and action. Rough Ryder seems to do a better job at delivering that. For me it's a bit of a toss up, but in terms of sheer value, the Rough Ryder is a better choice. In terms of subjective intangibles, the Case wins because it has sentiments of fealty and history, which is no small thing either. Plus I kinda like Case's red (also black) synthetic covers. Super smooth feel, but a more matte reflexion compared to yellow.
I find the blade stock is generally thicker then average with the RR CC II series. In the case of the Canoe, the knife itself is wider then their typical canoe. The thicker blade stock (which you can see at the tang when the Case and the RR are side-by-side) may have lead them to grind the blades thinner to accommodate the pattern. With the example you have, it looks like maybe they didn't really need to do so. Both great looking knives though. THanks.
Thanks for sharing your experience and yes, I agree, the Carbon Classic RR's do seem to have thicker blade stock. Which leads to a thicker handle, but I like them too.
Really nice Case Stockman. I don't own any Case knives, Yet. I do get blade rub on the sheep's foot blade on my R.R. Tiger stripe Stockman, but not at all with my RR 080 Brown Jigged Bone Stockman. Great Video, Thank you.
Thanks for sharing your experience. I guess blade rub is "acceptable" on stockmans and congress knives, but I prefer knives that don't rub, like your RR080. I have 4 case '75's and only one has no blade rub, so it can be done. The other 2 are minimal and this one is probably the worse, but this one is a working knife, so I guess there's that
Thanks JP. I prefer a blade with a working finish. Mirror finished blades are for show knives. So, I am OK if you have a "show" knife. Just my 2 cents.
