Two suggestions, from MY experience I) Glue a triangle of stiff leather to the back of the heel, wide part on the bottom, inside. This will support the heel, and keep the soft leather from sliding under your foot 2) Glue an OUTER sole to the bottom of the boot, sole leather if available, two or three thicknesses(depending on how thick the leather is) if it isn't. Soles always wear out with use, and it's a hell of a lot easier to rip an old glued on sole off, and replace it with a new one, than it is to have to take the whole boot apart and, basically, remake it!

May I ask why the corset stitch to join sole and upper rather than saddle stitch? 😮 (I am a beginner) Edit: Oh, looks like a whip stitch rather than a corset stitch (?)

Great job with the shoes m8. I will recommend you to use goat leather, lot softer, end fells better to walk with. Next, use waxed linen thread, then your shoe have a hover chance of being waterproof. Then last, make all your holes in the later before you start put it together, will make it easier for you. But great work, they are not historic correct for vikings, but they are a hell lot better then what a lot of others have. And cut the vikings have made them like that, yes, we just have not fond it. Keep up the good work m8

Not bad, just a tip though. Don't use those pliers to pull needles, the teeth on them will scar up the needles fray threads in the shoes. Use wax on the needles and flat jaw pliers if needed, usually when I wax the needle, I don't need to use pliers at all.

Hi, thank you for advice. This is something I didn't think about. I took pliers which I had in my garage :) and I used like 20 needles per this shoes because I bend or broke a tons of them. I guess with wax it would be maximally two...

Thank you for sharing your shoe making journey. You have great looking pairs of boots that look authentic. My apologies for the unkind and certainty unwarranted comments. I’ll never understand what individuals could possibly get out of being so negative.

@palimidajataganzidis4968
@palimidajataganzidis4968 3 года назад
Yes I did. I glued them together. Then I sewed bottom sole together with leather around feet, so after turning it inside out glued part stays lock inside. It is also better (for me) because of protection against sharp rocks and cold from snow.

My intention wasn't create stylish boots. My intention was create raw leather boots which serves its purpose. I spend day and night wearing these boots and were comfortable. Looks terrible, fit great ;)

@@palimidajataganzidis4968 You wanted to make 'viking style' boots though, which is what the title says. Not 'ugly but comfortable' boots. Perhaps change the title to 'ugly but comfortable boots' because they look nothing like any Germanic find I have ever seen. Using those god awful flipflops as a base for the design was daft. Those things are hideously ugly (you don't see them where I live except for foreigners, or Muslims for some reason) and the shape of them is utterly modern. Also they'll be comfortable at first because these shoes are NOT fitting your feet, they're inches too big for your feet. A proper turn shoe fits your foot like a second skin, almost like a glove. You can pad it out with a woolen sock for comfort, but having all that extra space just tells me you really haven't walked far in them yet or you'd have to pour out the blood from the damage you'd do to your feet having that much free space inside them.

@@dr.lexwinter8604 They weren´t fitting perfectly because were made for pair of woolen socks + linen grips which need space. And to be honest I walked in them around 25 km in the winter time (therefore that space for socks and grips as an additional heat). It was one night in the forest (and snow) with friends of my. About fitting as a second skin. Well if it will be like that, I can guarantee then I will have some serious injury on foots, based on experiences from my first pair which "fit" perfectly. Be careful, Germanic doesn´t mean nordic or viking. So if they do not looks like some Germanic find then it is correct. If they do not looks like any kind of shoes from that age, it is question, because what I know according to my study, there were only pieces of leather found from that age, not full size shoes. Because leather is organic material and doesnt stand for a long time. Anyway, thank you for your input and yours notes and observations. It makes me happy that even people who do not like this style and my "design" spend a time to create comments instead of having fun :)

lots of shoe finds from the time period. www.jorvikvikingcentre.co.uk/about/jorvik-artefact-gallery/ Id say they arnt bad, but id used a different kind of leather for the top of the shoe.

It amazes me in a disheartening way, how some ridicule and judge others so harshly. Yet they have unlikely put themselves out there in the social media. I’m old school. If you haven’t anything nice or kind to say, please keep your thoughts to yourself. It’s absolutely unwarranted and what purpose does it serve, too berate and belittle an individual, for putting himself out there doing what has brought him joy and a sense of pride ! You certainly have missed the most important lesson from this video. Truly sad for those with such dark hearts.
