I saw the MO at UPenn’s Irvine Auditorium in the Fall of 1971. I had never heard of them. I was absolutely gobsmacked at the sheer intensity and virtuosity of the band. Paradigm shifting music.
I’ve seen Vinnie evolve through the years and noticed many things. First, he’s an incredible MUSICIAN and always has been. He does what all great musicians strive for: to be the best musician they can be. Vinnie has it all- insane chops, feel, groove, and phrasing like no other. He blows me away by his ability to play things you don’t expect, yet they fit perfectly inside the style of music he’s playing. He’s not a showboater and I don’t think he feels comfortable with the “wind him up, and watch him go!” challenges that were thrown at him-especially in the 80’s. I’ve always felt Vinnie is a complete NATURAL and was born to play music and express himself through the drums. Much respect...
Victor always had his own distinctive sound until the day he passed on. He has always been a jazz bass guy, but you can’t say that he sounded like Marcus Miller or exactly like Jaco, who were both jazz bass guys too.
Parfait, mieux serait insupportable.
Talk of 'GOAT' is for children. To me, they are undeniable greats - but there are other guitarists and drummers I could name who do it differently - not better or worse - and who are also greats.
AH !
My number one band.listening to Birds of fire and Inner mountain flame over many years and still seem to find things ive not noticed before.Five absolute Maestros.Never got to see them live, didnt hear them untill the late 70s.......bummer.....
