My mom is 85 and she had her knee replacement. I am her full time care giver managing pills etc. icing is very important. in Canada government give 10 free pt. But we pay extra 1 pt a week to come to our house. And we find that really help.as they do different exercise and learn from 2 professional. My mom as of yesterday 25 days in is able to bend 105 degrees and strengthened close to 0 degree. She is still in pain walking still bad we do exercise 3x /day. Also she is not sleeping

I’m 3 months post op TKR and my ankle is giving me the blues more than my knee. How can I help the pain?
@MovewithDrMike
@MovewithDrMike 3 дня назад
Thanks for taking the time to watch this one! If you’re 3 months post op TKR there is a high likelihood that your ankle pain could be caused by swelling that occurred from the surgery. Also could be a cause from your ankle getting stiff and losing mobility since you most likely have not been putting full weight on the knee. This is all very normal and i would start to focus on calf stretching to help improve this pain. Hope that helps!

I like your video but is it necessary for everyone to do such a long warm up ? For years now I've only done a very short warm up. 3 minutes at the most. Would appreciate your advice on this. Thank you
@MovewithDrMike
@MovewithDrMike 4 дня назад
Thanks for watching this one! I’m glad you enjoyed it and thanks for your question. Part of the reason why the warm up is longer in this type of format video is because I want my viewers to understand how to perform the exercises correctly. So going through the warm up one time often feels rushed so that’s why I like going through a 2nd rd. A warm up though can be very effective in as little as 3-5 minutes so I think what you’ve been doing is appropriate unless you need to spend more time in a specific area that might be bothering you with discomfort. Hope that makes sesne

Hello Dr Mike, i am post op 2 weeks of a tkr. The hardest thing i am going through is getting my thigh muscle to just work. I had PT today and it was really hard to march in place. I can extend my leg to a zero, and bend my leg backwards to 108. Lifting the leg is a challenge if im laying flat or sitting up. In a book i was giving from the home health nurse said i could rock in a swing to help with my thigh muscle. Apart of me doesnt trust the new knee but each day i can do more and im worried im going screw up the hardware or my incision will split open. Is there something i can do to help relax my thigh muscle so it doesnt feel like my bones and muscle is screaming? Thank you <3
@MovewithDrMike
@MovewithDrMike 4 дня назад
Thanks for watching and most importantly for taking the time to comment! The best way that you can relax your muscles is by using ice/elevation to minimize the swelling and to keep working on your flexibility which in the long run will elongate all the tight muscles surrounding the knee. There is a high likelihood that the stiffness is causing you to feel this way. Take it one day at a time and focus on stretches at least 2-3 x per day for the first 6 weeks if you can. Hope that helps!

@MovewithDrMike
@MovewithDrMike 5 дней назад
Although the most critical time to focus on your range of motion is the first 6-8 weeks I’ve seen some of my patients make progress with their flexibility at 12-14 weeks. This might require you to be more aggressive and consistent with your exercises. Don’t give up! Hope that helps!

Yep, that is very consistent with what I was told, all of these. At 50, I'm a young candidate, but the doctor even told my wife after the surgery I was way overdue, I guess just blessed with 75 year old knees in a 50 year old body. However, I am active and relatively fit, so walking on my own seemed like a good idea but the nurses and doctors said use the walker until the follow up. I've also made quick progress in terms of strength and flexibility and while that is good, it's best to not over do it as I have found out, I get exhausted quick. I mean, I'm not even three out from surgery and I feel way better than I did during the first week. I can walk on my own and even ride a stationary bike with little issues. I can even drive if I absolutely had to, but haven't yet. What I'm saying is even if you are doing good, it's still best to be mindful that you had major freaking surgery and you still have to give your body plenty of rest and don't jump into things. It's killing me to not do stuff right now, because I think I can, but recovering properly is key to a full, 100% perfect recovery. I figure a little more rest now will provide huge benefits later. My doctor was very specific about the position of the knee and not using a pillow to support it and that is a big comfort thing, but fighting through the discomfort has allowed me to get to flat really quick and also help my knee/leg position. I still have a long way to go, but doing the PT religiously and staying on top of the tips they give you is important.

My biggest challenge has been a little different than others. I am concerned about hardware failure. How much weight can I place on my knee? I am 5 weeks post surgery, I have good range of motion, no pain, but when I start to climb stairs, I am still stepping up with my non surgical leg in fear of damaging something. I was told it takes 18 months for the the knee to completely heal. I am in PT weekly but having a hard time overcoming the vision of hardward failure. I appreciate all of the good information and demonstrations you provide. Thank you Dr. Mike!

Thanks for stopping by to watch and support the channel! It’s normal to not fully trust your knee in the beginning but rest assured that you are able to put 100% on the knee. Progressive weight bearing activities will be critical and focusing on eccentric step downs can make a really significant difference in building strength in your hips/quads to be able to independently use the stairs. Check out this video I made here on my favorite exercises to help with stair training 👉 ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-XAufAjQ2wNw.htmlsi=UoerJFuUt1Jrx9b_

@MovewithDrMike

Thanks for watching and for taking the time to comment! Yes these exercises would be good for anyone looking to restore strength, function, and flexibility in their knee! @@MovewithDrMike so these excercise is essential after the cast is off .....if the cast is on after sux week still how do i deal with it in terms of excercise
@MovewithDrMike
@MovewithDrMike 9 дней назад
@@rogerhinds6583 unfortunately with a cast you’re limited! The exercises that I usually recommend to my patients that have to wear a cast for an extended amount of time includes isometric contractions and exercises that incorporate movement of the surrounding tissues around that area. For etc of the ankle was in a cast I would usually provide my patients with knee and hip exercises in the meantime until they are out of the cast.

Dr Mike - I need help. I am a 72yr old. I had my TKR on 27 April 2024 and have done all my Physiotherapy and I continue to do my home exercises. My scar healed quickly. I have had to return to work after 3 months off (as a Manual Order Picker) on modified duties which are ‘no heavy lifting, no standing for more than 30 minutes and no walking for 40 minutes or more. I have had to cut my hours of work to 5 hours a day. I find the swelling and stiffness is more pronounced after standing or walking within the prescribed time limits, although I do not have any pain. I need your advise please.

Swelling and stiffness after long periods of standing and walking is normal at this point. Your body is trying to find its new way to adapt to a brand new knee. No pain is a positive sign and I would continue to focus on maintaining your flexibility with the stretching a couple times a week if you can!
