Hearing the translations you really gotta admire the *Deathless Soldiers* loyalty and determination to protect there home even if technically no citizens are living in it at the end of the day they where just guys doing there job shame they all had to die but in the end they earned there rest along with *Jacob*
I always wondered if they were using medieval greek (since the people speaking it are tecnically undead romaioi) or the devs just went with modern greek.. was a pity that none of the remnants npc was using either russian or greek since those were their languages. btw "Toxotai" is my favourite word for archers. So i was happy when i recognized "toxotes" xD
The difference between Medieval/Byzantine Greek and Modern Greek wouldn't have been noticed by 99% of players I suspect. But it would've been a nice touch
The big greek dudes with helberds are pretty scary looking standing close to lara. If the regular greek dudes look twice as big as her, then the big boys are 3 times her size atleast.
The axemen are more menacing, since they are faster. The archers less so, the swordsmen will jumpscare you if not looking because of their jump attack and the halberdiers are easily noticed, also you can't see behind the shield.
the coolest ancient army ever. that was a good surprise to me to fight them, a little like the Floods parasites in Halo. i think they can make greek language very cool sounding too.
Not as far as i can tell. They are dresses as fairly elite Clibanari or Skoutatoi.. Given the Prophet flight from the Empire in the X century nordic style in the Empire would have been widespread. (as Nordic mercenaries were more and more common) But you can still see some more Romaioi influence. Generally Romaioi Helmets were more open in design..only design issue i have is their shields.. it's not Roman of any period. Romaioi shield were either round or ovals. That is a more latin design. But still immortal guardian and such. =D
@@andrews.5212 The Eastern Romans used Kite shields during the 900s-1400s. From the 1200s knightly shields were in use. They are dressed with chestplates from Medieval knights, helmets from Ancient Greece (enclosed Corinthian looking helmet) and Roman (Galea looking helmet but with nose guard). They also have vambraces and greaves (which are Greco-Roman). They also wear mail armor and enclosed mail coifs. They do have some sort of pteruges (Greco-Roman protective waistband). They were a former Roman tagma called the Athanatoi, which existed in history. They were nowhere close to Skutatoi, they outclass them in equipment. Klibanophoroi and Kataphraktoi are close, but still wear lamellar instead of plate armor (unless its 15th century, but they were 10th century). One of their statues depicts swordsmen with a round shield and no dual swords.
@@sirdemetrius2173 When playing the game you see dead soldiers of the Prophets army wearing accurate byzantine armor and attire throughout Syria and Kitezh. It's explained in the game that once Kitezh was settled and as time went by, its people and culture evolved separately and became more and more advanced and surpassed that of the Eastern Empire(one of the documents specifically mentions that). Most of the architecture is deeply Byzantine in style but also has old a lot of roman classical style, especially the statues. Likewise their armor and clothing evolved, that's why you get such a combination.
Who could win? A Elite Byzantine Knights, armed til the teeth, greek fire, blessed with a powerful magical source or... A raider with an bow and alpinism equipment?
@@yuvraj748basically any Oni soldier (without archers) can solo Lara. Oni were elite samurai overall. As far as I know Lara is not a samurai or any swordsman to 1v1 against an elite samurai warrior.
No. Greek is the lingua franca in the Eastern Roman empire when it was still united with Western Rome, and official language of the remaining Eastern half of the empire after Greek supplanted Latin way later. And no, you forgot the speakers of Old Chinese, Sankrit in the Indic regions, the Iranian languages of the Persian etc. It is not a common tongue at all.
Well as a Greek they seem less terrifying but more badass, since the Stormguards are mysterious Japanese samurai that scream like demons. And are described as demons. They also scared me shitless in the first time I saw them.
Yes and no. The City of Kitezh (the hidden city which Lara and trinity are trying to find) was built by the immortal prophet and his followers after they fled the Byzantine Empire (which was technically the Eastern Roman Empire, which didn’t fall until the 15th century, while the western Roman Empire fell in 400AD). Hope this answer isn’t to complex lol.
Formerly yes. They were known as the Athanatoi (a real-life order of the East Roman Empire), but they joined the Prophet to Syria and Siberia. They guarded the city until the Mongols came and then sunk it beneath the ice. If they came out of Kitezh and said 'we are the last of the Romans' then they are the last of the Romans.
These duds are nothing compared to the warriors from Tomb Rider (2013). I was 8 when the game came out, I swear I’d go pale whenever I had to fight them lmao
I loved this section and the oni one in tomb raider they just felt so awesome just a shame they didn't manage to set sail to face trinity since lara stopped them lol
@@TyrannosavageRekt I'm sorry I forgot, the Greek language has a tone system so you emphasize the pronunciation on the second 'a', something like a-th-aa-na-te. The 'a' in Greek is always pronounced like in the word a-lpha and because the last part is '-οι' I 've replaced it with an e in the English version.
@@TyrannosavageRekt At last the 'e' is pronounced like in the word 'me' and not like in the word 'egg'. I would advise you to listen the pronunciation on Google Translate but, on Greek, Google has the most unrealistic robotic voice, no one talks like that.
These guys are so badass. They’re basically the last true remnants of the Roman Empire. Such a shame Lara killed them all. It would have been so cool and different if Lara had made herself immortal instead of destroying the Source. Honestly you could make a game based on these guys alone. Tomb Raider has always been the master of bringing forth awesome concepts like Ageless Self-Resurrecting warriors but never really doing anything with them afterwards.
@@mostafaargoun672 when you kill them they turn into fire but they will resurrect. One mongol survivor says how he killed a deathless one and then the fire that remained start crakling louder and louder. They only truly died at the end when the source was destroyed
@@mrmoney9822 I'm pretty sure the reboot trilogy takes place the same year they were released in real life, so 2013 game in 2013, this one in 2015 and Shadow in 2018
just bought the game much cheaper thx to black friday. Btw when i first saw the deathless army i was amazed. incredible voice and has a incredible level design. i was a bit scared of that language cuz i wasa terrified of their voices and footstepts. best sound design
So anyways, I remember playing this with my mom and aunt, and at that part, the language sounded familiar! It was Greek,we were surprised coz we are Greek ;)
Idk how were you surprised. It was hinted for the whole game that this is about a greek colony established by religious exiles. Thats why there is learning greek from murals mechanic. I dont know greek but I knew it was greek from the start and athanatoi also sounds like a greek word (and I think these guys are athanatoi). Even in siberian wilderness Lara points out how sofias armor "wouldnt be out of place in byzantium"
They won't, if the moguls could push them to the point where they need to bring down the glaciers on to the city then imagine what our modern attack jets and millions of professional military could do. We could just have a plane drop a deep penetration bomb into the chamber of souls and destroy the source or we could launch a ICBM to absolutely wipe the place clean.
the biggest question on my mind from this video is: where the hell did the deathless come from, during the atlas scenario?? you see shadows of them, sneaking around like ninjas and killing trinity soldiers, when in reality they're nothing like that, they're more like a brute force army that doesn't hide but charges in. yet throughout the entire time you're trying to bring down the statue, the place is empty like nobody is there. all of a sudden, theres like 50 of them? where did they come from? that large gate wall face they're on, is that a passage connecting to kitezh?? because i thought the deathless were hidden from the world, unless this was a separate legion of deathless just stuck down there, living in their greek fire factory, completely unconnected to the deathless in kitezh?? idk it just seemed really odd to me to run into them there. they were so close to the surface there, that if they wanted to, they could just go up and take out the remnants
maybe they indeed use unseen secret passages which only goes through the underground places (Trinity opened the Archives) which never goes to the surface. wether they'rein the archives (they would use them to ambush the Trinity guys), and some other connected to the Kitez lost city. we can assume also that their left massacres and their sudden appearance in the Atlas place is more like for a suspenseful effect in the game story.
@@giannilyanicks1718 I thought the reason the deathless never came out into the world was because they were trapped. But it may be that they're not even interested. The archives probably had tunnels connected to kitezh. I think the game explanation for why you can't go to kitezh from the archives is because there were too many deathless and everything was getting destroyed while lara escaped. Even though you can still return there later, the story acts like you're not supposed to go back
There was likely only a few soldiers in the beginning murdering Trinity. They also can climb as well as Lara in their full armor. They likely gathered and broke in with full force knowing there were many mercenaries but it was too late, it was only Lara that stole the Atlas. It was probably a way that leads to the main cathedral when they wiped the floor with the Trinity mercs and went to inspect the explosions in the Greek fire production facility.
Well, this is certainly MUCH better than the "pig Greek" we hear from the captured prisoner and the mourners at the graves. In those instances, they absolutely butchered it. Why they could find voice actors for the Deathless Ones who spoke Greek, but not for the other NPCs, I have no idea. This game also seems to have very poor understanding of Greek and Byzantine culture, as well as the Eastern Orthodox Church. We see a shrine to the Apostles in the Baba Yaga DLC, yet the saints in the twelve icons (some of which repeat) are clearly not the Apostles. And we see well known icons, such as the Epitaphios and the Transfiguration, cut up and pasted together to make original icons of the Prophet. Things like this hurt the immersion for someone who is well-versed in these things.
It is more because the remnant have also absorb ex soviet prisoners that cannot spell Greek well, also due to their isolation from the world it is possible that the language spoken would deviate from the majority. Finally, the game requires the characters to spell English well, however it is much harder to find professional that speak both language fluently.
@@giannilyanicks1718 theres no such thing as byzantines or their empire.Their romans byzantines was a made up word by german historian in early 20th century i believe. If you would go back in time you no one in the eastern roman empire would call themselves byzantines
