Regarding Renato´s answer: 1 - Brazil doesn´t celebrate Valentine´s Day (Valentine is a saint, so no way Brazil would change it´s day to June 12nd). Brazil celebrates Dia dos Namorados ("Enamored Day" or "Lovers Day", something like that). The reason for Dia dos Namorados to be in June was commerce. It seems that sometime in the 40s/50s, the commerce and business was complaining they had little business in June, so they came up with the idea of a Valentine´s Day equivalent in June (why Brazil does not celebrate Valentine´s Day I do not know. Maybe not a popular saint here?), so people would buy and give gifts for their beloved ones. 2 - Carnival is a roman catholic holiday (of roman pagan origins however) and follows the religious calendar, and that´s why it always changes dates. But Carnival is not a brazilian only thing. It´s also celebrated in other places in the world, including some famous carnivals like in Venice, Notting Hill (London), several towns in Germany, etc. Brazilian carnival happens in the same date as these other carnival celebrations.
