Just a curious hiker that asks all the questions. Occasionally joined by my daughter for some awesome adventures. These videos are my visual diary to remember my adventures for years to come.
Enjoying your trip along the Colorado Trail. Really want to do this through hike. Need to be done with work so I can experience some of these trips. Sorry you guys didn’t get the trail magic but great stuff so far.
@@chrismartinson6943 Hey Chris!! I mention you multiples times throughout the trip. You are always with us. We are thinking of a late June TRT again next year. Along with the High Sierra Route in late August. I can’t wait for G to post the other videos!!
My husband and I have been wondering how you both have been. You've been absent from youtube for a while. We enjoy your hikes. You make it fun. It's not something we would be able to do, so we enjoy following along on the journey. Does Gabriel have a channel, too? If so, we'd follow along.
It was fun watching you go the rest of the way home. Living in SoCal, Yosemite has been a lifelong playground for me. If you could have stopped at El Cap and had binoculars, you would have been able to watch the climbers. Happy trails!
I have now watched all of your videos. I love the running commentary. It’s taught me to try and enjoy each hike I do a little more and not just get through it. What a blessing to have G do these amazing and difficult challenges together. She always gives it to you straight, nearly never complains and has full respect for you and your relationship. I believe you’re doing it the right way, by getting joy out of life in nature and creating incredible memories and bonds with your amazing daughter. God bless, Hank F.
Really enjoyed your hike through the JMT. Very inspirational as I hope to do some of these same hikes once my granddaughters get old enough and I can retire some day😂. Thanks for taking us along!
I'm close to your age and will be doing the same hike this summer. You didn't appear to be that distressed physically during your hike. Which I found amazing. What kind of training program do you follow?
You can always tell a day hiker couple. One of ‘em does NOT want to be there, heads down, no eye contact, nothing to say. I always give ‘em a cheery “hello!” just to piss ‘em off. LOL!
We by no means took everything from the hiker box, which was basically a sorted cabinet and buckets full of food. We asked the owner multiple times if it was okay to take what we did. Because of the snow levels this year a lot of boxes people sent for their resupplies were never picked up from people who ended up not doing the trail. A lot of extra food that nobody was using.
43:45 That's a Belding's ground squirrel 🙂 (also known as a "picket-pin", to continue the "picket" theme 😀 The High Sierra Camps are about a day's hike apart, making a large loop through the higher area of Yosemite. the reservation list is usually full for a couple (few?) years. They provide meals and cabin tents for sleeping. Kind of a low-key glamping... and they've been around for a long time. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/High_Sierra_Camps
Amazing video guys! Yosemite National Park is very high on our bucket list and hope to make it there soon. Keep up the great videos :) New fan from Bangalore
Spectacular video. I grew up camping and hiking in Yosemite and Tuolumne Meadows and this past summer everything was fresh and green well into the late summer due to the abundance of snow. I feel refreshed after watching this.
While it doesn't appear like a "pass", Island Pass is indeed the top of the Sierra Crest. This is the only section of the PCT (and JMT) that is east of the Sierra crest. It crosses back to the west of the crest at Donohue Pass. Very cool that you got to see a bear being a bear in Yosemite... and not a camp raider 😀
I am enjoying following your journey. Thank you for sharing! I used to work backcountry trails and just wanted to let you know that section of trail you weren’t happy about (rip rap) was probably over 100 years old. I know Yosemite has two backcountry trail crews so you can imagine how much trail doesn’t get worked on each season.
All familiar and a very beautiful section. After watching all this years PCTers go through Thousand Island Lake, over Donohue Pass and down into Lyell Canyon during the snow, it was nice to see the green meadows, flowers and dirt trail once again. It all looked particularly fresh and aromatic, especially with the river running through it.
i think that is Gladys Lake at the 34 minute mark. I remember Roslyn lake being to the left (west) of the trail. eta: Nice video. I had some sprinkles when I went through that area on my '04 trip. I went from Red's Meadow to Island Pass, and was pretty beat. I did enjoy a fantastic sunset, tho, and a cloud-free sunrise, with Banner Peak reflected in a pond. That area at around the 50:00 mark reminded me of the beginning of Lord Of The Rings: The Two Towers, where Merry and Pippin are being carried by the Orcs 😀
I'm having so much fun looking at your videos, thank you for sharing your story. Both of you definitely have a sense for story telling, it feels like we are going along with you, like we are on the same trip. I didn't know about John Muir trail, it's far from Québec where I live, but now I will be dreaming about being able to do it. I'm 64 and the clock is ticking but maybe...As a closing, I love to see the great relationship you have with your daughter, that is worth more then anything else. Take care and thanks again.
Super! As for the burn area leading into Reds Meadow, it happened on August 21, 1992, caused by a lightening fire. For a number of years it has been described as an ugly, unenjoyable section of the trail by JMT/PCT hikers. However, I must say that over this last year or two it's finally starting to look better with all the green understory growing up, and there are some trees starting to come up, not very tall yet but at least they're growing. I'm stll impressed with G's pack, it always looks so symmetrical and balanced. I would love it if she would do a detailed post-trail video on how she packs her pack!
Enjoy the videos a whole bunch, I wish they were a bit longer which would show more of the trail and beauty of the Sierras. Also to add on to what @trishlarrysnyder1008 said if you had less wrap-up at the end which is about 10 minutes of your 30 minute post to see more of the JMT Trail.
In case you didn't figure it out later, Mt Whitney was the mass with all the ribs running down from the summit. The west face looks nothing like the east. I think when you panned along the crest while descending into Whitney Creek, Mt Whitney was behind the tree. You could see Mt Russel in the notch to the left of the tree.
Really enjoying all the great video footage and both of your comments along the way. Hopefully the SOBO's you met near your last camp won't get too discouraged as conditions get tougher.
VVR is a blast, definitely hiker friendly. Paint (short for Paint your Wagon trail name) is the Ferry captain and keeps the resort running in tip top shape. Jim, the owner, is very friendly and his mother (or in law, can't remember) is a terrific hostess, greets the ferry and provides instructions on how everything works to help hikers get the most out of their experience. Great place.
Glad the bridge worked out for you. As for MTR, I've heard the same story for years, they're just not too hiker friendly there, but it's good you can at least charge your devices. I keep noticing Gabriel's Hyperlite pack, I think it's the Southwest model, but it looks like everything, especially the bear can, fits very well. I have an Osprey Exos 58, but trying to get the big BV500 in it doesn't really work. I'm considering getting a Hyperlite, but the only thing I don't like is the lack of ventilation. I'm wondering how happy Gabriel is with hers after putting in all those miles?
She's had it for a couple of years and loves the pack! She used the BV475 and it fit fine. She said it can defiantly get hotter on the back sometimes, but the sweat is inevitable with any pack 😂
