My immediate thought is a pinched gasket or the float is not closing. Sounds like you'll have to take it all the way apart again. My error that led to this video to begin with was rushing the job.
Brotha is a life saver! This was the problem on a 2000 xvs650. Idles and revs but when under load didn't want to move, throttle response was everywhere. When they cleaned the carb they put this part in backwards hole was facing the wall not the jets. Runs like a bat out of hell now, night and day difference
Thanks for the video. I believe using the peen hammer correctly is all you need. After time the bolt holes get deformed, they should be slightly recessed using the small rounded side of the peen hammer. This will put strength back around the bolt holes and your seal will be closer to a factory seal. I just want to say more reverse peen isn't better, you only need a very small peen to get a better seal.
Thank you for posting this video. I had my carbs off my bike for a rebuild and had already had them back together but not installed on the bike when I found and viewed this video. So I went out to my shop and examined the carbs and sure enough I had made the same mistake. Thank goodness I hadn’t already had them back on the bike and tried to run it. Saved me a nightmare and a great deal of work. Can’t thank you enough.
Can’t thank you enough for putting this video together. I’ve been tinkering with this carb for 3 weeks nows and I’ve looked/cleaned/adjusted everything but what you mentioned. Thank you and god bless!!!
Just caught this.. With pretty much stock motor.. I have a 90 softail 1340...bought the bike and making changes.. I do believe the motor has has some work done.. It's not fully stock.. Right it's the stick carb and VH short shots.. Been thinking of upgrading the card and going with some drag pipes... This video just confirmed that's what I want to do.. Lol.. Awesome.. This is right where I'm at and now I know where I'm going to with my bike setup.. Thanks.
I know this is way too old , but dealing with same issue I find out there is a notch which guide us to put it the right way without using the wire trick . Thanks to all Star riders !
JESUS DUDE NO ONE NEEDS TO SEE YOUR FACE CLOSE UP LIKE THAT WAY TO MAKE MY DAY HORRIBLE JUST ABSOLUTE HORROR SHOP NIGHTMARE FUEL RIGHT THERE. SERIOUSLY NO REASON WE NEED TO SEE YOUR HIDEOUS FACE THAT CLOSE. YOU DEMON. GHOUL
We had fios installed a couple months ago. Seems to drop more and more, but not sure if it's always at the same time. Luckily we never disconnected spectrum so I find myself switching over. We might just get rid of the fios since we never had this much trouble with spectrum. Kind of don't have the patience for whatever this problem is.
the hole lines up towards the nut. You should be able to feed a wire through the 'nut' all the way through the hole in that metering sleeve. Sorry, im using all the wrong terms here.
Omg you are a life saver! I pulled all of that apart. I am JUST now putting it all back together and would have never known unless I had stumbled across this video. So BIG thank you!
I am getting tank rust and black chips into my gas filter. I think this is the reason my 650 stalled on the highway and will not run. The bike was stored in a garage for six years and I had my Carb Rebuild a few months ago. But I think ir is all clogged up now. I think it may be better to buy a new Carb and Gas Tank.
Dave, just picked up a 2005 VStar 650 that didn't run very good. Idled well, but the first little extra throttle and it was good night!! Found your video, pulled off the air box and you could already see that this was the issue. Yanked the carbs off, re-seated that sleeve, and its running like new. Thanks for posting this - saved me and others a lot of time!! Mike
i believe there is very small metering orifices within the jets, a small wire will get thru but nothing bigger than that. if you look close at it they look like six pointed snowflakes in the jets
Well I finally got to working on this again. I found the issue with that hole not lining up so I was sure this would fix it. Just put it all back together and was a beast to get started. Finally nursed it with some starting fluid to get a steady idle. Ran it down the road and it's exactly like it was before. I've adjusted the carb sync screw all over the place. I don't have a carb sync gauge set. I tried the little homemade hose and oil trick but that doesn't work very good for me. I'm lost as to what it could be. Still has zero power when I get to 3rd gear.
Is this rejetted? What position is the clip in? I am thinking this is a rich/lean condition. My guess - only a guess - is that you are very lean. Running it cold with choke makes it richer, but then with the extra air at speed, you are too lean. Look at www.650ccnd.com/rejet.htm and www.650ccnd.com/jetchrt.htm and www.650ccnd.com/perf.htm and www.650ccnd.com/trblshtcrb.htm
@@daveqlockard as far as I know the bike is stock. I am reading thru the info on that site (very detailed 👍🏻). Thanks for the help....I will try this next chance.
I am in the process of fixing a Vstar 650 for a friend. Carb was yuck. Took it all apart and cleaned it. I do remember having that issue with one side. But I didn’t know about that hole in it. It’s all back together now and idles fine. Rough on higher throttle. Driving it 1-3 gears are so-so but 4th gear I can barely get to 55mph. 5th gear won’t hold speed. I’ve fiddled with carb sync and nothing helps. After watching your video, I am certain this is the problem. I will report back after I get the carb off, fixed, and reinstalled.
05 yamaha 650 v star classic after I cleaned de carburetor and when I turn on the ignition gasoline is drained from the drain hose any one know how to fix it?
The carb body have a pin that force correct insertion, look around the sides where you tread the brass screw and you will find it, is facing the flat end of the part.... ****be extremely careful*** with the brass screw, ethanol eat it up and can break if you tighten it too much ... it happened to me and Yamaha part is costly and difficult to find, ebay have the screw for 25.00 bucks !!!
OMG, THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU for making this video, this was my exact problem. I had taken the carbs apart countless times and didn't realize this was my problem. AWESOME
That is the needle jet I had to replace both of those in my 03 650 classic . I have everything on the bike now and it’s idling ok but when I open up the throttle when I’m riding the bike it dies . I’m wondering if this is causing it . They are slotted on my carbs and only go in one way so idk .. I’d be really annoyed if I have to take everything off again I’ve had to do it a few times for different reasons now starting to lose it
Sounds just like my tale. Except I could even get half throttle. If this is your issue, I would guess that yours was at a closer position to allow some fuel metering than mine. Sure wish I took a before vid. Good luck.
What exactly was your bike doing if this was the issue for me it idles perfect but when I give it gas it dies does that seem like the issue? I took that screw out and now am wondering if I didn’t instal it back like this correctly
@@galenhodges8838 exactly that. Idle was just a little low, twist the throttle any, and it Stalled. I was cleaning my carbs when I found it was put back together wrong.
