Richard Pierce machine could not fly. Maybe went on ground for 140 meters, but as a pilot for 51 years i know that thing dont have a chance. Not enough engine, not enough prop, not enough wing to fly ..
Actually there is debate on the first settlers of New Zealand. The Maori polynesian immigrant people talk about this this in their oral history. The country is called New Zealand and to say aotearoa means the North Island.
Did she say the "first settlers" that would implicate that Maori abdicate from being indigenous "tangata whenua" as the term indigenous implies that they were always there but not.
2:22: *confiscated to stop rebellion and prevent it from being used as staging points for attacks on other hapu and settlers. 2:34: *it was actively preserved by settler researchers. 2:46 Maori were free to speak their language, only in schools were they not allowed to speak it exclusively, just like the Irish. 2:56 dozens of bird species and large parts of the marine population were wiped out long before the Europeans arrived.
Pakeha were responsible for most of the bird and other species decimation by culling the forest 🙄 and then introducing macupial mamals like rabbits deer possums hedgehogs etc then introduced toxic weeds.
It is only thy land, which is liberal towards us. From thee also come the missionaries who teach us to believe on Jehovah God and on Jesus Christ His Son. We have heard that the tribe of Marian [the French] is at hand, coming to take away our land. Therefore, we pray thee to become our friend and the guardian of these islands, lest the teasing of other tribes should come near us, and lest strangers should come and take away our land. And if any of thy people should be troublesome and vicious towards us we pray thee to be angry with them that they may be obedient, lest the anger of the people of this land fall upon them. This letter is from us, the chiefs of the natives of New Zealand. The above is part of a letter signed by 15 Ngapuhi chiefs to King William on 16th November 1831, 9 years before the Treaty of Waitangi was signed, asking for his protection. The colonisation of New Zealand by the British Crown was by invitation.
It's also important to understand the British point of view. The European settlers (as they were termed) were a lawless lot and causing trouble among themselves and iwi poulations. As well, the French had set up in Akaroa and some iwi leaders were concerned about them. And then there were the Musket when maybe 20 000 tribal members died. The missionaries and some iwi leaders looked to the British government to quell things. The British (from their legal standpoint) could not act without permission from the local population and the best way of doing that was by both the British government and the iwi leaders signing a treaty and eventually some semblance of order came.
Got proof that Musket wars killed 200.000? Maori populations wasn't to be able to counted properly. I believe introduced deaseses were responsible for a lot of deaths
Firstly, correction. James Cook didn't discover Aotearoa, Niu Tirini, NZ. Not a good start. Need to do some home work on that front. How can one discover a country when there were are Maori people living here, hello.
He wasn't the first to officially discover the country but technically he did as he had never been here before and had never seen it in any of the books of maps he had studied at the time, so personally, it was quite the achievement for him. Especially making one of the first-ever maps of this newly found land in the southern ocean. He would have been seen as a hero in Britain.
