Ironic that Arnie hates this movie yet it is/was so ahead of it's time with it's meta commentary about the typical stereotypes of action movies AND it even jokes about Arnie and Sylvester's action hero rivalry ;p
Yeah there's a weird futurism in the film that isn't fully realised; the neon lights in the car park, hanging numbers in the police station and the monitors at the front desk, the clothes of some of the characters, etc. I wish they would've leaned in a bit more to this element...
LAH was a brilliant. I have no notes. This video however…very upsetting. What are you trying to be exactly? WHY THE F*CK are you talking like that? I sincerely hope that this is an AI voice bot.
I interpreted Ian Mckellan's "Death" as being a fictional character in the movie shown, but an actual character in the real world, thus keeps his powers. A sort of universal truth that transcends reality and fiction, unbound by the medium.
I've been a fan of these movies since childhood, having been born and raised in Los Angeles where they were filmed. I've visited that location many times for different reasons.
Great film great video not sure I like your theory mostly because of the idea about New York changing, it’s irrelevant as to whether it was changing or not because in the minds eye of everyone in the world it still looks the way it is portrayed in the film, in-fact I would argue that even now people over a certain age probably still see it that way. Unless you saw it on some kind of news broadcast but this was not news worthy pre 24 hour news channels and pre internet being widely available if they showed it in its current state at the time it wouldn’t be instantly recognisable especially when you take into consideration all the films they are referencing. The world used to move so much slower back then.
This is true, although Giuliani became mayor in 1994 and Times Square was still undesirable then, the initial wheels of change had been set in motion since the early 1990s under Dinkins. NY state had bought 6 theatres in 1990 with plans to redevelop and the huge firms Bertelsmann and Morgan Stanley had both purchased properties there in 92 and 93. By the time LAH was shot, a lot of the former adult theatres had already closed and were dressed for the shooting of the movie.
I guess my experience watching this movie was dark to begin with. I was 15 when this came out. During the scene were Danny is being robbed at knife point I could hear a lady crying behind me. I guess her husband was with her & he was consoling her. Sounded like they lost someone to some kind of robbery. Very sad to hear. It's also crazy that a song from this soundtrack came up on my playlist earlier today reminding me about the crying lady. And I didn't even search for this video, it was on my home page for YT. I swear Google is always listening & it creeps me out.
I'm the product of this exact era. the films I watched as a young child were mostly action and sci-fi of the 70s, 80s and 90s. I had Alien, Texas chainsaw massacre and Spawn toys...I watched this film and my favorite parts were the guns and action me and my brother had an armory of toy guns and even made action home movies. The violence was so prevalent and not only in our entertainment but in our real world experience. When me and my twin brother were young a gang of men broke into our house and one put a knife to my mom's neck...I think seeing that and being helpless really messed with our psychology.
This is unironically my favorite movie of all time. Loved it since I was a kid and wore out my VHS copy and it was a huge influence on my taste in music. yet I never noticed the camera guy being reflected like that. a brilliant moment, accident or not.
OK that's cool. I always liked Last Action Hero; it reminded me of the Piers Anthony "Apprentice Adept" series about a guy who can go back and forth between a high-tech world and a fantasy-magic world. And he took his other self's identity, so there's the 2 World thing and the identity thing. I have to say I never caught the crew in that scene. I was so caught up in the lovely spin tracking shot. It does add another layer to the Awareness Cake. I don't buy the abuse angle; would he go back, as a streetwise kid who fights? Also... I'm not 100% sure, but wasn't the home invasion in order to get him that handcuff key? I'd have to watch again to be sure, but I think that was a Chekov's Key.
The only feedbacc: not sure why all of you "others" need to be told this... his last name is pronounced NEIGH-ger.. or NAY-ger.. or NEH-ger... it isnt difficult at ALL. Definitely starting to seem intentional.
@@ElevenYearz yeah... im sure you dont say NI-bor.. or NI-tion.. im sure you dont say that horses NI.... but his name mysteriously baffles you... sure. Weird how yall all have the same problem.
Nice video but lets not overstate its originality. Fact is they took "Purple Rose of Cairo", Woody Allen's oscarbait hit beloved by the industry but largely unseen by the general public, and repurposed it into an action movie for mainstream audiences. I am 100% sure that was the original pitch.
@ElevenYearz thanks for acknowledging me. I will also point out that kids being sucked into their favourite [videogame / book / tv show / rollercoaster / etc] was pretty common trope of 80s cartoons.
What about the scene when he realizes he is not the main character in slater's wolrd but the clmic relief? I mean the scene he rides the bike against a car....
I always liked the movie and I don't care what people think about whether it was good or bad. Movies have sucked since 1993. A few outlanders but movies have sucked. I blame communism getting into movies again.
This movie just takes you from a real dark rainy crime infested city into a warm sunny paradise. The contrast between dark NYC and sunny CA. Everyone wants to escape like this kid.
