Hi Andy, I do like the new intro music on your last couple of posts. Another interesting video on the axe handle stick. Yes the weather has been wet, today seems to have impoved here today. Take care Paul
Thanks 👍. I have just seen you have up loaded a shelter build. Going to watch after responding to comments on here. I am going to build another bow this winter. Thanks for watching. Andy.
Always a pleasure watching other people that don't scorch the earth, it shows your experience and respect for the outdoors, I don't get why people do it... It looks awful and stinks and the scars take a long time to heal. Top tips thanks for sharing... BatW ✌️
Hi, yeah I do my best to not catch the forest on fire. My home made set up is very efficient and does not require vast amounts of wood to get it going and produce heat. Thanks for watching and commenting. Andy.
Great video my friend! Much history in the English long bow. I was given one years ago. Probably don't have strength to string it, much less draw it. Looking forward to an over nighter in the bushcraft shelter.
Hi, yeah, mine is a fraction of the historical longbow draw weights, but it still takes it out of you.You guys over the state side are allowed to hunt with bows. I did watch a gentle man called Clay Haynes (bow hunter), and he's very entertaining .Thanks for watching. Andy.
Beautiful dogs. 👍When I was young I had a Samoyed. My girlfriend at the time taught her the difference between howl and growl. She would do either on command by just saying the appropriate word.
Bracken is unique in the fact that he's not vocal for a husky. Star is totally different. She's loud and already has the husky howl. I could imagine your past girlfriend must have been really working hard training the dog to do that, must have been entertaining, but hours of training must have been done to get that to happen on command. Thanks for watching and commenting. Andy.
Hi , yeah, she's sure entertaining, but you need eyesbin the back of your head. I am sure Echo has given you fond memories of this age also. Thanks for watching. Andy.
Hi Andy, good to see you having some quality downtime, the breakfast looked good, now I'm hungry....lol. Another interesting video, thanks. Take care Paul
Hi, my next camp will include your kind gift as a taste testing sample. Was nice to do just camp activities instead of just building. Thanks for watching. Andy.
Hi Andy, Star is a lovely puppy and has certainly grown since the last video and a lot of training ahead for you. Walking at this time of the year is certainly down to the weather the paths are full of mud. Take care Paul
Hi, It's the getting up at random time that's the hard part.lol. She's already a bigger eater than bracken. If we are not careful, she will pinch his also. Lead training at the moment, but she's strong-willed .Take care, Andy.
Hi, I sometimes ponder on things and the way they are. I have concluded that perhaps things have to get so bad before they can get better. Unfortunately, I am running out of time to see the better times arrive. It would be valid to suggest the decline is now permanent. Thanks for watching and commenting. Andy.
I think a lot of us, if asked, would agree the world isn't in a good way at the moment. As for the UK, I admit it's in decline and showing no signs of recovery. Thanks for watching. Andy.
i made a special hiking stick for myself,i put a 4 inch copper tip,i put 3 copper tacks in i used epxy too,oyt looks nice,i made 8 sticks last week, some disasters,my sticks come 6 feet long, phew ,i can make mistakesbut not to many now
Hi, I'm glad it's worked out for yourself and crafting projects. With the amount you're doing, you will need to start going to craft fairs yourself. Thanks for watching and commenting. Andy.
@@hiddenvalleyfootpaths2561 i made then for gifts but now i have made them,i aint parting with them, they are all hanging in my foyer next to the patio dors, they are beautiful,i like loking at them,to be honest i am shocked i made something so beautifulbut i have, thanks for the info andy,i would never sell a stick i would consider it disrespectful to you,i am ok with the copper tips,i pilot hole 10mm for the copper tacks they dont snap
yes 100%right I use most hardwood if the shape is there I'm looking for have used Oak,Holly, yew,Birch,I cut in autumn or winter keep in garage for over 12 months then start straightening I use boiling water in big saucepan put stick on top cover with foil giving it about 20 min usually works fine for me .
Hi, Sounds like you have a nice setup and procedure for your crafting . You have a nice selection of woods to work with, which makes for more variety when crafting .Thanks for watching. Andy.
Nice video Andy...what I've started doing with my sticks is after sand bark or wood I use that varnish which is milky colour when wet, then after applying couple coats I then use rustins polish which gives it nice shine...it's not over shiny like yaht but still really nice
Hi, That's handy to know. I have used an ECO varnish, which was white when applied but dried clear. Most customers have moved to oil at the moment so I am fortunate at the moment. Thanks for watching and commenting. Andy.
Hi, well, we are getting winter weather now. You would have to pick your days out walking. Most trails are a mud bath....thanks for watching and commenting. Andy.
I did a handle for a digging implement, leaving the bark on; several coats of Danish oil. About 3-4 years later the bark began to peel. Just thought I'd give a heads up.
That's always a concern. I have seen 100 year old sticks with dark in good condition but also bark lifting in 5 or 6 years. That's why bark selection is critical for the starting point of a project. Using a hard varnish can reduce this concern more than oils which is the advantage varnish has . That's for commenting. Andy.
Hi, I experimented with one, but the UV protection was minimal in it. I must invest more time searching for new products. If you can recommend any, that would be great.Cheers Andy.
Hi Andy, great video. You've been at this craft longer than me so if I could ask you this. I've always seasoned my sticks with the bark on. What effect if any would stripping the bark off before seasoning have on the seasoning process?
Hi, if you season an average stick, it's not far wrong to say a year is enough, but if you strip the bark, you can... depending on drying conditions, speed it up by a month or two.The issues in removing bark you increase the risk of cracking, and obviously, it reduces the options for crafting when you're ready . Thanks for watching and commenting. Andy.
@@hiddenvalleyfootpaths2561 Thank you for the reply. I reckon I'll try seasoning a few sticks with the bark stripped off. Look forward to your next video.
Hi, yes, this one conforms to UK law specifications. I refer to mine as a grandfather's pocket knife, but technically, it still has to meet UK legal requirements. (Which mine does). I could justify having it as I was out of Bushcrafting and part of my safety items You are totally correct to question as here in the UK knife laws have changed recently and are permanently in the spotlight due to the activities of our inner-city gangster culture.
I think you must be the guy that sells on eBay, I bought one, lost it at loch Ness, so bought another before I got home and one for my brother for Christmas they are top class stick's
Hello,Many thanks for your custom and support. That's a beautiful location to be out enjoying yourself (Loch Ness). Once again, many thanks for supporting a small cottage industry and Cornish crafting .Andy
My absolute pleasure, we stopped at loch Ness then went on to sky, and when I got home my new stick was Thier. My brother lived on a canal boat and will really enjoy the way his stick is mead
Hi, When I go out Bushcrafting, they are my go-to knife now. Strangely worth nothing to anybody else, but to me, I love using. Thanks for watching and commenting. Andy.
Hi, I actually thought after looking at the map, I could pull this off with no problems. Turns out I was wrong and misguided. Bit of a fail, but as you say, it's not even feasible for water usage. Thanks for watching and commenting. Andy.
Hi, You are certainly correct. Horse shoe knives don't have carbon enough to make good quality blades. They fall into the category of novelty, but they are usable if you're prepared to put an edge back on it every few camp out uses. Thanks for watching and commenting. Andy.
Hi, my wife says I am the slowest painter in the world.Just the ceiling and woodwork now...lol. I must admit that if I had the money, I would pay a decorator (I am not keen on painting). Thanks for watching and commenting. Andy.
Take your own water. I was watching Feargal Sharkey on LBC, he's testing rivers all over Britain; the result, I wouldn't want to go swimming now. I still have my DPM issued 1970, collar's a little frayed but still usable.
Hi, my DPM jacket is my outdoor activity Go to every time. Good bit of kit that a civilian equivalent will set you back a good bit of money. I was under the impression that our rivers had government agencies managing them to protect against pollution. Seems you are right, there is plenty of information to suggest the rivers are not as clean as we believe them to be. I will track this interview down and watch. Thanks for sharing. ( I have boiled up river water before, so I am concerned ) Thanks for watching and commenting. Andy.
Hi , You are totally correct it has the capability to allow you to pack for multiple days if you select your kit appropriately. I only really have the ability to do overnighters wildcamping due to family commitments. I have used it on exercise for 48 hours away from my main bergen before. I tend to over pack( bad habits). Thanks for watching and commenting. Andy
A wise decision made regarding bringing your own water in. At least you know from your recce that you are making the right choice. Has your smock been treated with anything. It looked like it was keeping you dry enough.
Hi, I have treated it with a coat waterproof spray form a outdoors shop. It has helped, but it does wet out when in.. full on torrential rain. Yes, the recce proved distance and terrain was just to difficult so easier to carry it in myself. Thanks for watching and commenting. Andy.
