the reason for the windows virus culture has to do with microsoft believing in security by obscurity, and prioritising ease of use over security for decades, making it so that end users almost need to run everything in administrator mode, downgrading the nt security model to be comparable to dos. without the separation of privileges, any compromise basically gives full access to your machine to anyone that can infect it.

I'm a gamer... I find Windows to be so repulsive lately that I'm just about willing to give up gaming, regardless of if games work on Linux or not... I have some games working... but overall, I think I've had more trouble than average getting games to work... Might be a hardware issue, I'm not sure, but if it is, I'll find out in a week or two, since I'm doing upgrades soon... I do still have Windows, I plan to keep Windows for the foreseeable future, but I'm moving my old hardware into it's own case, and keeping Windows there. Gaming will be it's only function. Ever since Windows introduced Recall, my trust in Windows has been shattered... pardon the pun... Almost immediately following that announcement, I haven't done any banking, shopping, using spreadsheets... No such sensitive tasks have I done on Windows. I even avoid doing work related to my job, just because I don't want to be the security hole... I don't even care that I have 5 year old hardware with no NPU... I also don't care that Microsoft backpedaled in response to Recall backlash... Just the fact that they thought it was appropriate to introduce it was enough for me to make an exit.

This is simply false information being spread: Windows is no less secure than Linux. The fact is that administrators are very capable of blocking every single component from unauthorized or unwanted access using group policies. Many companies also make use of this option - without the administrator having to go from place to place or having to deal with user adjustments. Windows feels less secure in terms of viruses and worms, but this is mainly because Windows is more than 90% prevalent in the private sector and most virus developers therefore pounce on it. Support for ASLR (Address Space Layout Randomization) makes buffer overflow exceptions less risky, as an attacker cannot rely on a certain section of code being at a specific address. The greatest uncertainty factor is always the person in front of the machine, regardless of the operating system!
@grokitall

the issue is not if windows server can be made secure, but that the windows desktop as shipped has various insecurity and usability defaults enabled in the name of convenience, and fixing most of them is beyond the average user. and of course not all of them can be fixed due to mandatory microsoft overrides.

17:55 that biggest let down that windows has for you isn't windows update, rather its your imagination. if you spend 1% of your time learning how to manipulate windows update as you do on linux, you'd fine there to be a way to disable all featured updates for 3 years. this leaves security updates only going through. that also doesn't keep you ever from starting you pc up or shutting it down, rather it gives you the option to update and shutdown or update and restart and also regular shutdown and restart. nobara os on my laptop asks me for restart on about 4 out of 10 updates( i update my laptop once a week). whilst most yt videos all say reboots isn't a thing on linux... i really hate how disingenuous all linux people are about windows update, when its only bad with its default settings, changing some setting makes windows update literally not a problem. yet the many videos on the net ignore the fact that it can be changed to be nowhere near what its atrocious default is.
@EverydayLinuxUser
@EverydayLinuxUser 3 дня назад
But the issue is that windows has these as default settings. Your average Joe doesn't want to have to search through screens of settings, they just want their machines to work. It isn't just Windows by the way. All modern devices do it nowadays. I have a Toshiba TV and last week it wanted an update and then it forced me to add a pin to protect me..protect me from what? Is somebody going to force me to watch something I don't want to. 😀

Usually there is only one reason as to why you would need a restart after a system update. And that is you updated your kernel. Updating your kernel is nice and good, but as long as it isn't a security patch you can just pin kernel and never update it. Now with user computers it doesn't matter. Users regularly shut down or restart their computers, thus a kernel update isn't a big deal. It's a big deal with a live service server. Usually you can't leave your system outdated for too long as it really posses a security risk. But the few experiences I've had with updates have been, that they always force me to restart after an update and sometimes updates got installed automatically because security updates and such. And there are times where you don't want to update your system. Why? Because you are currently on a business trip and every change to your system could potentially brick it.

Mounted Windows Drive partitions are denoted by drive letters and a name. Linux Drive partitions are denoted by a name. The last argument, abut updates. I get what you are going for, but claiming "I can't print my tickets" is only AFTER you press "reboot now". When the updates on windows is downloading and installing before the "reboot now" prompts, you can absolutely use the computer normally. What I would like to know is, "why does windows require a reboot after an update" and why does windows have to reboot MULTIPLE TIMES?!? Linux rarely "requires" a reboot, but if you want for example kernel updates implemented after an update you either have to reload the kernel, or more easily, reboot. But there is usually zero problems to just keep working on a linux machine after any update, they just might not take effect until the system is rebooted. THAT is the difference.
@EverydayLinuxUser
@EverydayLinuxUser 4 дня назад
The printing tickets thing has happened to me and sometimes it is when you first boot up and you aren't expecting the updates that it suddenly says "updating..." And there is no button to say not now.or don't do it. It is definitely easier to reboot to install a kernel update and unless you have new hardware that you need to get working it is rarely an urgent thing
@grokitall
@grokitall 2 дня назад
there are a number of issues with the windows update system as installed, and even more when you look at how limited the update configuration options are. the first is that i have yet to see a windows machine with a default install where the updates are not configured to download and install automatically, without user interaction. this means that it places their value of when it it convenient to interrupt your work above your more nuanced judgement about when an update makes sense. there have been multiple high profile examples of windows interrupting important and urgent tasks with no warning, not even giving you the chance to save your work before going into an update lock. this would be bad enough without having the history of failed reboots after updates, but given that history, it should not be the default. then there are the issues which especially effect laptop users, but also everyone else to some extent. having triggered the update, it queries how many there are, and immediately starts downloading them all. if there are hundreds, it might not be a good time to have the machine locked for over an hour, even discounting the issue of if your laptop battery will last long enough to finish the download and install. you also cannot select which updates to install. you have to have them all. having downloaded everything, it then immediately moves on to installing everything, even if this is the wrong time to do it. even linux gets this part wrong. the better approach is to download them to a local mirror, then install them when convenient. on the issue of reboots, when a kernel or core library gets updated, you need to move over to using the new code, and for this low level stuff, it needs the reboot. windows makes it much worse, because it requires reboot after each individual update of this core code, rather than installing it all, and then rebooting once.

And someone asking the same question that can easily be answered by a google search goes way to the bottom of the priority for us. Also, showing respect and appreciation goes a REALLY long way. Again, remember, these people do this for free TO HELP YOU. Using ai to ask linux questions is risky AF. (they are very good at coding, but general linux and config settings, ai is NOT a good source) I sometimes use my local AI to ask questions I have a hard time finding info on online, and 9 out of 10 times, the ai is just making stuff up. (yes, I use the latest open source models) DO NOT GET YOUR SUPPORT FROM AN AI!!!!!!!! My case is more of a special one: I have installed Xrdp for remote access, because RDP protocol is a lot faster than VNC. But Xrdp uses Xorg. So basically that resulted in running both WayVNC with the Wayland desktop session active in the background, and a new X11 desktop at the same time, because the Wayland desktop is always loaded after boot as it seems. The thing is, I got some strange issues with this, like a pasword prompt appearing after login asking for permissions and the logout buttons not working. Fully switching to X11 by using config utility solved it all. This also makes WayVNC unable to be used anymore, so Xrdp becomes the single option, unless I am going to try RealVNC, but which is proprietary software and that's not what I prefer. So that's what I have to live with. But if it works really well, it's fine. Another thing is that experiencing pretty high CPU load of the Wayfire process when running webbrowsers on it. X11 seems a lot lighter, even with the remote desktop session disconnected. So maybe it's just not the best Wayland compositor?
