My favorite ad of all time is an old Patagonia ad showing Mark Twight and Scott Backes in a hotel room going through an overstuffed Black Hole Bag. The caption reads "400 lbs of the lightest gear on the planet".
That isn’t the current model which is easily less durable than the older versions. The current model doesn’t have the corded ties. I know because my old one delaminated and was replaced with a new model but it’s a lot more fragile and doesn’t have the tank like quality of the old one. I think you have to consider the Beta SV if you want similar quality today. Older one is shorter as well. Given how long you’re has last I’d like see how you maintain your jacket.
Regarding the camera, I don't agree. Yooo. agree, don't carry a lot, but bring a good compact camera. It is far better than using the phone. I myself use a Sony RX100 which sits in a case on my chest, so I can take it out while I'm hiking.
My favorite socks are Bridgedale Midweight Merino Performance Socks. They have proven themselves to be excellent on multi-day hikes. They are suitable for both moderate summer and winter. They are very durable and smelly-resistant
I learned this living in a tent for 6 months. I assumed that it was going to be cold at night (Which it was) and wore clothing in my sleeping bag. It doesn't get that cold till around 2 hrs before sunrise, but prior to that the temp only drops slightly and slowly, so initially after you've just fallen to sleep and through the night you're sweating and that's fine while you're warm. Then the temperature crash and then suddenly I found myself waking up in soaking wet clothes freezing cold. I quickly realised what it was mostly likely to be and went from sleeping in my clothes to sleeping naked. Worked a treat. (This was years ago using a traditional summer sleeping bag 1 season made of cotton). Basically it's your start cold technique.
I have the Patagonia mini MLC 30 that I haven’t used yet and the Patagonia black hole duffle 40L that I have used for 3 weeks (loved) and my old osprey Fairview 40L ( also used for 2-3 weeks and loved). I am kinda wanting something that could be used for more as a personal item for a weeklong trip or so. Would you say the Patagonia Black hole 25 would be sufficient as a one bag trip for a week or get the 32L and try to not pack it out too much? I don’t take as much stuff as my friends and don’t take loads of toiletries. I used to be an over packer but in the last few years went from a roughly 70L duffle to 40L (I tend to take one trip and year and it’s always 2-3 weeks long). I am really torn between the BH 25L and 32L. I don’t need an intense admin pocket because I don’t tend to travel with my laptop so I’m still on defense in regards to the mini MLC as it doesn’t seem as squishy and able to fit some of those tighter budget airline sizers.
Thanks for the great review! The SlingFin Portal 3 is indeed a great tent for summer and early fall travel. It's sad that SlingFin doesn't have a similar product in the four-season tent category that weighs up to 4 kg
Great tips, thank you. Can you suggest an app for planning a hike, I.e. route, transportation, lineage, etc.? Also, what brands of wet weather gear do you use? I’ve found that light wet weather gear wets out and defeats the purpose of keeping you dry. Heavier wet weather gear keeps me dry, but I sweat from the weight and well it is a lot heavier.
I'm seasoned and love watching your videos. They are mostly useless to me as I do same same but in very different areas, but they make sense and are fun to watch.
I have fleece that's 30 years old or more and it still keeps me warm. A few pieces stay at home now and they're only worn on cold winter nights. As investments go, this is the Rolls-Royce of clothing.
There is also a chair one from helinox. I went with the one because it is higher and my knees love it. I have the long wide insulated tensor, love it. I also have the trekkology 2 pillow. My flextail pump is the max3 with a light. My "camera" is fly rod and reel and some flies. We have a lot of similar luxury items!
I was confused why Mowser would release a vid on a Saturday, but then I realized it only feels like a Saturday for us in Victoria. Wise stuff as usual in the vid.
Visiting friends and travelling all the way to the north of Norway. It was our starting point. Also did Preikestolen while there. We love Stavanger! Can't wait to return
Make it multipurpose and then it has more value on the trip, it is the item that only has one function that some bring multiple of that can be the issue.
I am often guilty of bringing too much food on hikes and coming home with 30% of what I started with! On a recent hike I realised that I was going to have too much again, and I came across another hiker who chatted for a while and then asked if I had any spare food, so I dumped some weight onto him, and he seemed to be grateful! A win win for both of us..............
You have to travel a few times to know how your body works. Some people might only have 1 or 2 meals, and others may eat as they go and seem to still be eating when sitting.
@@mowsertas oh there you are!!! Ok. I'm just seeing these tents for the first time. The "minaret"? Is that one?? I have a MEC Quail plus it might have been a minarette knockoff. 🙃
I just completed a hike in the Namadgi National Park south of the ACT with the Canberra Bushwalking Club. We got snow and it went down to at least -7. It's no joke when it gets that cold.
@@mowsertas uh not up here mate I've just heard of them and I dont think anyone has here. It's a rare find it would be even rare to find an actual macpac tent in usable condition. 🤔
Here in canada you gotta buy winter boots. 🇨🇦 its another pair of boots that youll probably only use 3 months out of that year but they are essential and very handy to have. You can squeese by with an extra pair of socks but temperatures dip down to -20 better to be prepared. 👍
Goretex fails because the water particles, being larger than sweat particles, block the pores of the item of Goretex you are wearing ergo excess sweat can't escape.
