I don't need great LOUDNESS. Just looking for the right TONE to get the attention of middle schoolers in the classroom when they won't stop talking. I really liked the NOT SO LOUD but warbly tone of the cheap generic blue whistle at 9:00 time. Thanks for an informative video.
@@curtgraber thanks for the reply! What free/low cost softwares would you recommend? I’m looking to build a similar cannon, but want to simulate first so I can build to get a certain velocity output
Excellent, excellent review. I was wondering if anybody had taken the time to do things professionally in this topic and this is great work. Thank you. I have the Storm. Very happy with it.
Curt, nice work on this! I'm trying to use this diaphragm valve idea to launch much larger projectiles (~ 40 lb). What is the software that you show in the video?
Greetings There are a few pneumatic launcher calculators out there, one we have used forever is GGDT or HGDT pneumatic calculator, do a google search for these terms and you will find it archived in the way back machine as I think the web page is long gone. if you cant find it i can pull it up from our database and send it over. its very old school but very useful. no problem scaling it up to 40 lbs or pumpkin gun kind of stuff!
@@curtgraber Thanks, Curt. I found the "spudfiles" Wiki, and the link to Hall's prompted me to install a browser extension. Looks phishy to me. Would you be willing to send the program? And if so, is there a "personal message" option on RU-vid to give you my email address?
We took this project on to help folks make educated decisions and eliminate the subjectivity in loudness and spectral content and useful range on moth blown whistles. when all the data was compiled it was obvious and intuitive to anyone interested including Gov. level entities who are not interested in Marketing Specifications but real data to solve problems and to buy the best products for specific applications. cheers!
I think of the boss of the "Storm whistle" who keeps repeating in several videos that his whistle is the most powerful in the world, constantly comparing it with the "HyperWhistle" which is ultimately THE most powerful whistle in the world. The numbers speak, the “Storm” is crushed, with 14dB more! Just huge ! But we don't take into account the ease of use of "WindStorm" which can whistle in water, nor the price of "HyperWhistle" which is far too expensive and bulky. For me the best size/power/price ratio are the Fox 40s, in particular the "Micro" and the "Sonik Blast CMG" used by referees of several outdoor sports. It’s a safe bet! When the figures announced by the brand are lower than reality, it is a very good sign. On the other hand, the opposite, distrust. I have the "EGWT Triple Tube" indicated for 180dB XD. It's a nice whistle that makes a lot of noise although in reality, it rings in the ears, it's not so bad, bought for only €2. Very surprised by the "BinBoll Double Tube" which looks like nothing, among the smallest whistle in this video, but which sends very loudly! A very low price in China. The “Nitecore NWS10” is also ultra compact, but above all made of titanium. A pretty good score compared to the size. 3dB less, but durable high quality product. An affordable price, even if for a few grams of titanium, it's still too much.
Greetings Thanks for your input! The numbers do speak very clearly on the results, however most of the products tested seriously overclaim their Output Level/Ranges especially the cheaper products from China which in general are just garbage products sold cheap. lots of good products on the market but you get what you pay for. the top products in performance generally cost the most as a premium offering. Cheers
Greetings I appreciate your question. Tests were taken in both an anechoic chamber as seen in the video intro (SPL, Frequency-Spectrum and Overtones capture) as well in a real room (SPL both LCPK, LCMAX results) identically in identical conditions for all whistles tested so that repeatable test results would garner a objective not subjective test result. Clearly I could not show every test of every whistle in every condition and scenario and keep the video under 12 hours :) so the video captured the essence of the certified results tests (which took more than a week to complete) and published the results in shorter video format capable of showing the intended effort. Wattre Inc. is an accredited NIST Certified acoustic measurement facility that is quite capable of producing real world testing of anything acoustic related and has been doing this for the US Gov. for more than 20 years. It is a fair test to all products tested and the results stand as the best test ever contrived for mouth blown whistles and has been used internationally by 10's of thousands of folks in qualifying mouth blown whistles to date. the Analytics really tell the story with Hundreds of Thousands of Viewers to date :) Take care...
HyperWhistle is very unique , it is a three primary different but related tones device tuned to a center at 2600hz and the Acoustic Heterodyne of the three tones produces a very rich in Harmonics natural warble without any need for a ball or pea in any chamber, it is the only product of three natural tones with this feature on the market...
7:40 - I have the STORM. The most impressive about it is not just that it's very loud, but needs NO EFFORT to blow! The only thing I don't like is how bulky it is...
The Storm is a great whistle and has been on the market for some time but it certainly is not the world's loudest whistle on the market anymore. Hyperwhistle is clearly louder and has a longer range as was shown in the video.
That marine whistle wasn’t like the kind I seen in another video. This one wasn’t much to write home about. And that party whistle I bout fell out of my seat laughing. Dude 🤣🤣🤣
Molto strano nella realtà il sonic blast e molto più forte degli altri fox 40 e anche molto più forte di come si sente in questo video. Sono un arbitro e ci sono molte prove.mah
Pretty hard to argue with the actual captured test data both in SPL and acoustic spectrum of the whistles, often times the subjectivity of each persons ears can tell them that one is louder than another due in part to a specific whistles harmonic content, some harmonics are perceived smoothing (even order Harmonics such as 2nd 4th 6th Etc.) and (Odd order harmonics 3rd 5th 7th Etc.) are sour notes or harsh sounding to our ears. BTW that is also why tube electronics (producing only Even order Harmonics) are preferred for pleasing Guitar distortion in music as compared to amplifier clipping distortion (always odd order harmonics) and hard on the ears. We have done a ton of tone work in this area in the past 25 years figuring out what people like to hear versus explicitly what they exactly don't want to hear for example.
Sorry we could not have everyone's whistles on this test, but we did our best to include all of the market leading products and a few fun additions including the Giant yellow whistle :) I will add the Molten Blazza to our list of contenders for the next video.
thanks for you comment, in our testing we covered several of the electronic whistles and found that none of them meet in actual testing with performance claims of the packaged manufacturer claims. And I can 100% tell you it would take a car battery to hit 150db! that level will never come from a 9v or AA batteries it is just beyond physics due to the actual power needed to generate that level of acoustic output.
Loved your comment, and have used it in conversation a few times already! maybe Chewbacca needs a huge yellow whistle hung on his laser blaster belt ; )
I appreciate your kind words... We put a lot of attention to detail and science into this so that it would clearly stand out as the OBJECTIVE test and review as compared to the typical SUBJECTIVE review video as is very common in this category. Virtually all of the other reviews were simple, blow a few whistles, and state which one sounds the loudest. that fails to ascertain true performance as can be backed up with the science of sound and acoustics. Glad you enjoyed it!
@@curtgraber I watched about 7-10 other whistle videos and still didn't find the information I was looking for, once I got to this video, I got every piece of data I needed, laid out and explained perfectly, and even data I didn't know I needed until you presented it! Right after watching this video I purchased 3 whistles based on the information found on the video, I saved this to my favorites to come back to, and deleted all the other whistle videos from my history. THANK YOU!
Great information, I wish the photo of the excel page on that link that you keep giving out had a better quality so we can actually understand the text. But I was able to take a screenshot of the one that you showed in the video.
Greetings Tom While we have not tested that particular double barrel whistle, I can tell you no double barrel whistle or even triple barrel whistle is even close to the claims as is pretty typical of china engineered/manufactured and marketed products. Look at the Noopel, Viriber or Binbol they are exactly the same whistle as the Niyet and they also inappropriately claimed 150db and they always test under 120db they are just generally poor whistle designs but they are very cheap to manufacture (less than $0.25 USD per whistle in volume on the wholesale market look them up on Alibaba) so the market is flush with them. Our test results in this video are now internationally acclaimed, we may repeat the effort in 2023 to include any new offerings, but so far just a couple of newcomers to the market and we have tested them, nothing improves on the top 10 of this list!
Actually what I said in the video was "watch for other little ones" then I said "look at that monster" It did grow very fast it went from 1st sighting little funnel cloud (right over my house) 1.5 min later 1 mile away F1-F2, 3.5 min later and 2 miles away F3-F4 scale!
Found an orange windstorm at a dock whilst preparing for an ocean kayaking expedition, presumably fell off of a mariners lanyard, as the cord is broken.
What if you lowered the air pressure? Would it go a shorter distance or just not work at all? I’m just trying to find something to shoot a baseball at 45 degree angle for 70-80 feet.
we fired this unit all the way down to 30psi with good results, the amount of force you need to push the Baseball 70-80' is very low, likely less than 5% of the unit shown at 120psi
Good acoustic perception, it does sound like an owl and is also very close to the same spectral content and harmonics. It was purchased from Amazon as a novelty "GIANT party whistle" We had never had a mouth blown whistle that had a center frequency that low in the spectrum and it actually performs well over long range due to the lower frequency content as compared to louder but higher frequency whistles. Good Fun...
@@curtgraber At times some of us are looking for as objective review as possible. You did take the time and effort to provide us with as objective review as possible. I did not purchase the loudest whistle due to the fact that in many cases 120db (IMO) is enough to discourage a wood be attacker or even get the attention if you are in close range (ie parking lot).
